Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?

I've seen many comments about people having different problems and trouble with the new OS X Lion, does anyone recommend me to download it? My current OS is Mac OS X 10.6.7.

Actually I have red that Ars Technica Review (like this site) and thats one reason for my judgement. And most of this review is bloatware. Example: 3(!) pages on this review explain the file system HFS with a little speculation about the future. Basic info however is: Filesystem on Lion - HFS...

Even after 19 pages now I still dont know whether Finder view settings are now finally sticky and not so unpredictable as in 10.6.

Thanks for the hint to trash Finder Prefs but eventually there is a misunderstanding. I am not talking about global Finder prefs but view settings which stick for each folder (remember OSX 10.4?). To my knowledge these settings are still in the hidden .DStore within each folder (dont know whether still valid for 10.7).

Now (in 10.6) the settings may stick (setup with CMD-J window) but eventually are lost depending on your "browsing" history in the Finder.

I would hope for a more consistent finder view in 10.7...??

I had the same issue with Finder in Snow Leopard as well. The view setting didn't stick. Especially when making it the default ones. One of the first I noticed in Lion is that such issue disappeared. Now the windows view stay as I defiened them.

Still, the default might be stored in the global finder settings. The Finder plist file in Library/Preferences. Not in the .DStore which is local indeed.

It depends. Many people just have a wireless router with the ADSL modem integrated. I'd rather suggest to remove the WiFi interface in the Network settings and recreate it. And/or to reset the wireless router. Whatever else is on the chain shouldn't really matter.

I have seen the exact same issue happening with the PS3. After a major system sw update many people complained that the PS3 couldn't connect to the wireless network anymore. Then someone suggested that resetting the router did the trick. And that worked.

Obviously I am not saying that 10.7 wasn't bugged. 10.7.1 fixed a WiFi issue indeed. But it's a rule of thumb to restart the modems/routers when the network is not working.

From my understanding, if the Finder's prefs are corrupted it could impact the ability of the Finder to remember custom views on a per folder basis due to interaction with reading both custom .DS_Store and default finder prefs settings. However I haven't looked into this in a very long time so I'm not positive on this point.

I read this article http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20030305025744788&query=view+options +toolbar+visibility about how an older version of the Finder handled remembering window settings. It could easily be out of date, but I noticed that it said you have to have write permissions to the directory to modify the .DS_Store file. That could also be the issue. Again, without knowing your setup it's just conjecture.

I can tell you that on my system, 10.7.1 custom views are saved. So, if you are on the same OS, it follows that there's some sort of file corruption on your system that's interfering with your ability to have views "stick." So, you can start by throwing out the finder prefs and then seeing if that works. If not, then you have to move to destroying individual .DS_Store files where you're having problems -- that's assuming your file system is not damaged on a more fundamental level. Not being able to remember individual settings could be a symptom of greater problems.

I realize OS X users aren't supposed to have to worry about knowing things like the structure of the file system, and how all the pieces interact to give you the results you expect. However if anything goes wrong, without this knowledge, you're not likely to be able to correctly diagnose the problem nor fix it. A lot of people are reporting problems with Lion specifically and every piece of software in existance. But a lot of these aren't problems with Lion or the software in question, but with something on their particular system that's corrupt or misconfigured.

While, yes there are legitimate bugs in Lion, concluding that something is a bug without doing just a bit of research doesn't do you or anyone else favors. A quick google search will often tell you if you have a bug or something else. Not only that, often that search will reveal the workarounds or solutions to your problem.

So people just needed to restart their WiFi routers and that fixed the Lion WiFi problem? 39 pages of complaints and no one thought about that? That's one of the first things to do when our network is not working.

LOL, I had to restart my router after installing Lion too. I'd totally forgotten that! But it worked just fine after that. 😝
