Lion randomly crashes - black screen

Lion crashes ever now and thenand stays on a black screen. Its totally unresponsive, all I can do is force shut down but I've done this about 4 times already today any idea what's going on, or how to fix?

Thanks!

There are 190 pages of replies. I frankly don't have the time to read every single one in search of your golden post. I never guaranteed that it would make your Mac work. I simply reiterated the same temporary fix tht has been stated here and on man MANY other blogs and forums.

There are other solutions:

http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/09/fix-macbook-pro-2010-crashes-kernel-panics-black- screens-in-os-x-10-7-lion/

But the simple fact is that the gfxstatus fix MAY help temporarily, and that itself is reason enough to justify it being posted.

That is both a good idea and good question. I just brought mine in for repair. I have replaced the RAM and switched out my hard drive for a SSD. As he was running the tests the guy at the genuis bar could easily tell I had done both. No point in hiding it. I think you'll be fine since what you'll be bringing it in for is un related to the optical drive.

Update for myself. Just got my 2010 MacBook Pro back from repair and it's working agian! They just replaced the Logic Board. The only thing is I beleieve I did encounter a BSOD last night... I had an external monitor plugged in and a bluetooth mouse connected. I closed the lid to ender camshell mode and run soley off the external monitor. My bluetooth mouse didn't wake my computer so when I opened the lid again I had a BSOD. I unplugged the external monitor and still nothing on the MBP screen. I could close the lid and see the light come on on the sleep indicator. Not fully sure about that one...

Does anyone know if Apple will replace my logicboard if I've removed my optical drive and replaced it with a ssd ?

I have "upgraded" my Macbook Pro to 8GB memory. The Genius could easily tell that I replaced it because the system test as well as the Genius Bar sheet list 8GB whereas 4GB are "normal" for my MBP series. But he didn't care. And the reason for that is that this is no case of warranty repair, it's an extraordinary repair. Apple cares about the broken Logic Board and not the other components - they can, however, deny a repair by saying "the problem's origin is the SSD or the memory". But that was not the case for me and I guess it won't be for you as well.

I have removed the optical drive and replaced with an ssd previously. I then replaced it with the original optical drive. I then went in to the Apple store to get it diagnozed and I was told it is a covered repair since genius dind't look under the hood for anything else but just the software tests.

When they were done with their repair, they knew that I once replaced my optical drive. They slapped a $400~$500 bill (don't remember the amount exactly since I never paid it) citing that I had tampered with the optical drive (the wear and tear was showing on the screws and one tiny screw was missing since the caddie bay I used didn't require a screw at one of the locations on the board).

I chose to speak to the manager and she said, one time exception and my MBP will no longer be covered even it is a faulty logic board again!

My MBP is running fine ever since and I might go in for a out of warranty abttery replacement. I doubt they will deny any repair like they said earlier but yeah, be prepared to answer some questions.

You don't have to tell them you replaced the optical dirve but just put it back in if you didn't already!

And yeah, why bother with another SSD since they came down in price by a long way. Try getting a 256GB/512GB SSD and leave the optical drive in. Just my 2 cents!

Hi! I'm trying to read through this thread for a solution. IS THERE ONE?

I have a MacPro 1.1 2006 model. As soon as I installed Lion I started getting the black screen of death crashes. Does Mountain Lion fix this? Do I need a new graphics card? We need the MacPro for video editing and don't want to shell out the 4 grand it would take for a new one right now. Right now computer is unusable.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks!
