Lion randomly crashes - black screen

Same problem here 2010 Macbook pro... I think it's something completely non related to the software you use, I had random crashes every now and then even with the simple Finder. I really hope Apple will fix this soon, otherwise I will be forced to roll back to Snow Leopard... Pretty annoying bug though, Apple should pay more attention to this things in addition to the bells and whistles, I really don't miss these "Windows" behaviours...

And again, another "me too" here. Had this in DP4 and GM also, but had assumed it was beta issue(s) with other mix of software. Running completely clean install of Lion on a Macbook Pro 15" i7 2010 model, same as everyone else here seems to be. Locking the graphics card to Integrated hasn't fixed the issue for me, but just added Fan Control into the mix and got the temp down from 55 to 40, and hasn't crashed yet. Will monitor the situation I guess, and hope that Apple get out a fix ASAP!

My Mac book Pro has crashes daily at least 4-6 times since upgrading to OSX Lion does anyone have an idea when a system update will be released???

Did you ran software update on Snow Leopard before upgrading to Lion? It's look like firmware issue. Try installing a fresh copy of Snow Leopard by erasing entire drive and run software update. Download and Install Lion after that.

I also did the same to resolve some other app issues (app store not responding, small app crashes - but no black screen) when I install Lion directly.

Did all that, chap. Others in this discussion have too, if you read further above. Doesn't make any difference.

same problem for me. i was getting kernel panics infrequently before lion now i can't last 30minutes without one. I have had about 5 in last hour and have had 12 today. I'm absolutely Livid. and if i take it AGAIN to the idiot bar and am told I'm using it wrong and that nothing is wrong with the hardware god help me... $2500 for this ...

Count me in on this. I must have crash more than 10 times in a row by now. It was happening when I was on snow leopard as well but now it seems much more frequent. It's like I can't even click something without it crashing.

Another victim here. Machine dies (screen goes black) almost immediately after waking from sleep, requires hard reset. 2010 MBP 2.53 i5.

Same problem here, I also have a 15" MBP 2.66Mhz i7 (2010 model). After installing Lion the number of random crashes with black screen have been 11 in 2 hours !! Some friends have the same problem on both similar and different machines.

Sorry to say but Apple did a HUGE mistake selling an OS really unstable.

Hope they'll fix this problem soon! In the meanwhile I've reinstalled the old Snow Leopard ... guess what? no crashes at all! 😉

I think it is a joke from Apple. Worst mistake ever. I can't get any work done.

iMac Mid 2010

I haven't seen anymore crashes since my post yesterday, but i've been approaching it with caution- hardly "power using." I hate that. CS5 installed without incident, though.

Count me in! I'd made an appointment with Apple's retail store for tomorrow. Just to make sure if my machine is OK, because after upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard, I got at least 4 occasions of screen goes black and keyboard became unresponsive. Hardboot had to be done everytime for me to get into Lion again. I'd done a hardware test using the DVD that came with Macbook Pro, and the result said that my Macbook Pro was fine, because it found the machine had no hardware problem of whatsoever. I also noticed, upgrade to iMovie 11, encoded movie with QuickTime, but the final movie was greyed out, and so I fear that it's Lion which causes host of problems besides just black screen and unresponsive keyboard. Since the hardware test said my hardware is fine, I'm not sure even the appointment with Apple Store tomorrow will yield any positive result for me, but I'll go anyway.

Has anyone had a definitive fix for this problem?

Happened to me 3 times yesterday in rapid succession while using Powerpoint 2011 for Mac. Hasn't happened since. Weird black screen shutdown, not even the normal warning about how the Mac had to shut down due to a kernel panic. At one crash I thought I heard a static "snap" from within one of the speakers, but it rebooted fine. Hasn't happened since and I launched PPT a couple of times. I too have a MBP 2010 2.66 i7. Definitely something about the nVidia driver. Please Apple get on this!

It seems to be the system firmware issue. It's better to contact Apple Support!

Same problem; it must be the exact same issue as evryone I can see on this post has a macbook pro 15" icore 7, 2010. I do with 8GB and a SSD. As I can see I am not the only one with the issue...

Now that Apple has these posts they should figure out that it is a REAL problem.
