Lion crashes ever now and thenand stays on a black screen. Its totally unresponsive, all I can do is force shut down but I've done this about 4 times already today any idea what's going on, or how to fix?

I am kind of glad I found this thread. So I am not alone with my problem and hoping for a quick fix from Apple!
Me too - 2010 MBP i7 - frequent black screen - the computer is pretty unusable at this point.
I installed gfxCardStatus and set it to use the integrated video card only - still crashes. Most notably on opening the app store and in Keynote. My machine is mosly unusable 😟

I crashed about 6-8 times so far often in a row since clean install of Lion.
Seems like the graphics are overheating even though it is under no load? I installed fan control and on idle I am at 126 degrees fahrenheit is this too hot? Seems so with no programs open.
It seems to happen to me most often while browsing and closing Firefox 5.1 but think this is a Lion issue for sure not firefox
I contacted Apple support regarding the issue and was advised that I should re-install Lion or perhaps fall back to 10.6. I was rather disappointed that the tech was not willing to entertain the notion that there may actually be a problem in the delivered build of the OS.
Does anybody know whether an official bug report has been filed with Apple?
I have submitted a special file to apple as per request of an engineer that has crash reports and error logs in it.
Reinstalling will not fix the issue, I had the black screen crash when I did a normal snow leopard to lion "upgrade" keeping old data. Then I did a full clean install of Lion from a USB stick formating drive, etc and have the exact same problem with black screen crashing with same frequency so I can safely say reinstalling fresh Lion will not fix the problem!
Installing snow leopard will probably fix the problem as I never had this black screen crash issue with snow leopard as many others on here only had the problem when installing Lion.
I hope this issue is resolved however so I can use Lion after paying and having spent so much time installing/reinstalling the OS for it's new features!

Fortunately, I didn't encounter any of these issues when I upgraded to Lion from Clean Installation of Snow Leopard along with all updates. But I encountered couple of other issues when I clean install Lion using USB.
I have sent a tip to Engadget, TUAW, and MacRumors about this issue. I also sent an e-mail to Steve. Hope to raise the visibility of this issue to get quick relief.
Interesting, I also have a 15" MBP 2.66Mhz i7 (2010 model). I've had 2 of these 'black screen' crashes, requiring a hard reset.
The first time was while I was putting an application into a folder in Launchpad, the second time just now while I was switching between screensavers in the System Prefs.
Each time, I've had to do a hard reset but sent the report off to apple...
Uncanny that most of us appear to have the same model MBP...
Installed 2 utilities gfx status and fan control and seems more stable now. Will keep monitoring for crashes however has only been about an hour without crash since installing these
1. gfx status install, click little "i" in top menu bar and (set to integrated only)

My macbook now seems to be managing heat much better with these utilities and settings.
Hopefully a software/firmware update for Lion will apply some of these fixes if this is the issue!
Sadly, the integrated gfx is not an option for me, as I use an external monitor, which requires the NVidia gfx. Having said that, my machine actually crashed while I was out and about (ie. running on battery and integrated gfx selected).
Just want to add myself to the list: Same problem, same model. MBP mid-2010 with i5-processor and Geforce GT 330. Hope Apple will fix the problem fast. Its really annoying and I don't want to kill my OS with all these hard-resets
Just happened AGAIN! This time when I ended a Skype video call. Hit the end call button and poof!
