Aperture running at a crawl since lion upgrade
I upgraded to lion and my Mac, including aperture, is slow and pausing often. Will this improve on it's own?

Have you installed the update to 10.7.1? That seems to have fixed it for me and others.
Thanks Mitch. I thought I was up on all the updates, but I wasn't, and have just installed this one. I'll give it a week of trying Aperture to see how it goes.
There is definately a problem with Aperture and Lion (yes even with 10.7.1 installed).
The issue is video codecs not being ready for Lion. This is the whole Vista Driver thing all over again, but for OS X.
Divx, Flip4Mac and at last 1 or 2 others are not Lion ready.
I also capture Video into Aperture from DSLRs or those Flip-class video cameras.
Those libraries containing video are the ones giving me trouble on Lion.
I can take the library (which is on a FireWire 800 Lacie drive) and move it to a Mac Mini on Snow Leapard and Aperture has ZERO issues with it--runs fast--tastes better, etc.
Doesn't matter if you are accessing the Projects/Events with that video, Aperture will spin until it blows.
There is something that looks like a memory issue in the logs, but if something isn't there or compatible when its accessed, you can get all kids of false log messages--not that the errors didn't happen, just that they were caused by another lower-level error that perhaps didn't even get logged.
When you see a Video Update either in Lion or by your 3rd Party vendor, Aperture may finally work again.
Actually those codecs are developed by 3rd parties so it's not an issue with Aperture or Lion it's an issue with the codecs not being ready by the 3rd parties. Give them some time and they will catch up.
Latest Lion update seems to have fixed this for me. Aperture appears to run fine now in 64 bit mode. 🙂
I can see some improvement too even before the latest lion update. Yet I still see some differences....
I can do my work again!
I am experiencing the very same issues with my Aperture 3 software after upgrading to Lion. I do a lot of editing on old photos and the recovery rates are ridiculously slow and getting slower.
Any help would be appreciated.
If Lion was an upgrade please take me back to Snow Leopard.
Even after the 10.7.1 update, Aperture is still not working on my imac 7,1 4Gb as i'm used on Snow.
It's slow and memory hungry. Better than 10.7.0, but isn't optimal.
I'm waiting Aperture 3.2 or Lion 10.7.2 to fix.
Or i come back to Snow.
I haven't seen an improvement yet. I left it to process 82 raw images, and came back to find that it had crashed. The only things running were aperture and perhaps a time machine backup. This is getting tedious, as I now must wait again for it to try to process the images.
The sad news is that we have to declare the combination of Aperture 3.1.3 with Lion 10.7.0 or 10.7.1 UNUSABLE on systems with 4 GB of memory or less.
Although the 10.7.1 did seem to fix the most obvious problem with Aperture grabbing a +4 GB initial working set, it appears it did not fix the underlying memory management problem.
Aperture 3 crashes constantly on systems with 4 GB in both 32 and 64 bit mode when resource consumption increases. I find that using multiple brushes and feathering is guaranteed to crash the system. Looking at the thread dump it appears MM is the culprit.
It would be interesting to find out whether users with 8 GB or more are seeing an increased instability and more crashes under Lion as well. I suspect that they are.
Does anyone else get the impression that Lion is much worse than the average Apple OS release, or is it just me??!!
John K, any thoughts?
I really hope that it's going to be usable. However, I'm coming to the same conclusion: "the combination of Aperture 3.1.3 with Lion 10.7.0 or 10.7.1 UNUSABLE on systems with 4 GB of memory".
I'm running:
iMac, 24-inch Mid 2007
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)
and I'm back to running Aperture in 32 bit mode. It crashed again last night in 32 bit.
Last year I tried to upgrade the RAM, but was told by the local Apple reseller that 4 GB is the maximum this model can take. Oh dear.

According to Mactracker, the official Apple line is that 4GBs is the max for the iMac7,1, but it will actually support 6GBs. Check out OWC, they probably offer the upgrade, or just Google for it.
Never ask Apple about memory or disk upgrades. All they do is read you the official specs. Instead:
- find out the EXACT model of memory used in your Mac ( PCx-yyyy); pay attention to ALL details (ECC vs non ECC, pin count, etc)
- go to kingston.com and find out the equivalent that has all those features
- find the cheapest vendor from Shopbot and buy it
Same thing with hard drives. If you pay attention, you will pay half or less and get the EXACT same performance.
Memory cards evolve after they are certified by Apple and incorporated in their products. For example, the 2009 Mac Pro only used 1 or 2 GB PC3-8500 modules. If you ask them, that is what they will recommend. We now have PC3-8500 modules of 4 and 8 GB that work perfectly.
In your case, if you need 240 pin memory cards, you can get 8 GB (2x4 GB) from
for $252.99
Having the same problem.
