Aperture running at a crawl since lion upgrade

Do you have web updates enabled? Just wondering if it's trying to update Photostream or any websites? I ran into some slowness initially and turned all the web update functions off.

I didn't realize until last week that my 24" iMac (early 2009) supported 8GB of RAM... A $45 RAM upgrade solved all my performance issues and now I couldn't be happier.

I came across this thread while looking for help re. Aperture (3.2.1). I am still working in Snow Leopard and find that, recently, transitions and the Ken Burns effect which I apply to slideshows are very jerky when played back on full screen.The problem does not exist when I replay older slideshows.

All I can think is that downloading the recent Aperture updates (12/28 October.) without upgrading to OS Lion might have something to do with it. I have repaired permissions and the database. I emptied the thrash and have ordered an additional 4GB of RAM.

Would really appreciate some help with this.

IMHO you should go to Lion. sticking to old OS for long is not a good idea. I had all kinds of problem with Aperture which after the latest Lion update have significantly cooled down. i am on a 4g ram again and everything is going fine (fingers crossed)

i have not updates my aperture to the latest update (that went out a month ago or so) since i had some issues with my time capsule. I will though soon enough.

Smtimes my ken burns playbacks are jerky too, specially if i export in 1080 and have applied a lot of sharpening in the pics. I dont think aperture is the right tool for professional extra smooth ken burns slides in 1080.

I am running aperture 3 on a MBP core duo and it behaves like a snail. I love my machine, and why should I throw it away . . . But life ***** . . What do I do . . .

Has anyone found a fix to the slow performance? I am running Aperture 3.1 on a MacBook Pro Core i7 with 8 GB of Ram and this program runs at a snails pace. How do we get these performance issues resolved without throwing the program out and switching to Photoshop.

Sorry to hear of your situation. Have you tried updating to Aperture 3.2.2.? The jerkiness on my iMac disappeared on the Full screen playback of the slideshows but still persists while I playback to edit. Something else to consider. I recently discovered that my hard drive failed a S.M.A.R.T. test using Disk Utility. The problem might be linked to that. I don't know. I will need to have the drive replaced. If there is an improvement, I will post a reply.

one - did you check your Aperture Trash ? Well, I havent in a while and I had 23,463 RAW photos - so you may want to check it out

two - I found this app called Monolingual. The purpose is to strip all the additional language support that's provided under OSX. There are like 100 languages. But get this - it spent a very long time on the Aperture directory deleting versions in every f*&&^$( language in the world.

Yes do empty the tradh for sure that helps a lot. Make sure you update Aperture to latest version and having sufficient memory to properly run Lion and all active softwares! I split my library into four different libraries and that made for faster overall speed! I also stopped all Facebook links via Aperture, and if you don't use Faces that pften then turn it off as this helps with overall performance. Aperture dies many things very well but not all the things are perfect. RAM Memory is the basis regardless of what tech guys say, i am not a tech guy and often their solutions are too complicated to apply, so RAM is the way to go! I have no residual issues with Aperture since I pumped up the RAM. Software upgrades, library size management and RAM will solve your issues.

I'm happy for you, DodefroyB, but others should know that I doubled my memory from 4 to 8GB. Performance improved from a dead snail pace to an anciently old snail's pace.

@affenmac. As mentionned, not just memory needs to be looked at! Software upgrades, library size, Aperture services such as Faces, and obviously the age of your computer can affect greatly overall performance of running Aperture. I am running a fairly recent iMac (2 years old at most) So what type of Intel Core do you have and how much GHz does it have? Of course memory doesn't solve all, but its a part of the solution especially if you are running under LION OS vs Snow Leopard. At first Lion required a lot of memory, but recent upgrades helped reduce this issue. Still, Lion requires a more memory than prior OS, which impacts the softwares you run such as Aperture. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, but I have no more issues running Aperture, it runs at full speed now.

Without sounding abrupt.... get Lightroom.. free trial.. doesn't slow your mac at all... RAW processing and adjustments leave Aperture gasping...

Fixed by deleting, recreating a Plist.

Aperture performs just fine now on Yosemite. Faster in use than Lightroom because of better file organization, repeatable tasks, superior UI IMHO
