Safari in Lion not displaying site's header copy...

I had the same problem on one Mac that's running FontExplorer X Pro 2.5.2 and Microsoft Office 2011. The other Mac (without FontExplorer) was fine.

The resolution was removing duplicate fonts as mentioned above (duplicate = fonts with the same name but different location on the hard drive activated more than once). Lion install on the Mac without FontExplorer did it automatically and created several "Fonts (Disabled)" directories that contained duplicate versions of Arial, etc.

On the Mac that was showing the boxy [A]s, the installer didn't catch the duplicates. I had to open FontExplorer, select the "Active Fonts" smart set and manually uncheck everything that was activated more than once.

Oddly enough, Lucida Grande (the font used in Safari) was not activated twice.

After that, I cleaned the font caches using the following Terminal commands:

atsutil databases -removeUser

sudo atsutil databases -remove

sudo atsutil databases -removeUser

Then I logged out and back in and everything is running fine now, including Safari and the old version of FontExplorer (it can't read FontBook's collections, so I'm probably going to pay for the version 3 upgrade).

I think it's solved.

I'm grateful you posted here, because otherwise I would have never thought to look for duplicate fonts (and in my case there weren't any before the Lion install).

I hope anyone else with this problem will find this thread.

I have 10.7 running on a MacBook Pro and am using FontExplorer Pro 3.0. Restarting, cache clearing, fixing duplicates, turning off fonts, clearing cache with Onyx, FEP and from the Terminal all are temporary fixes. The problem comes back after a few Safari restarts or Computer restarts. TUAW and Dropbox continually display the LastResort font with the boxed A's.

Firefox displays all websites correctly.

in my case, FontExplorer's built-in "find duplicates" function did not find the duplicates. Neither did FontBook. I had to go into the "Active Fonts" smart set in FontExplorer, sort by font name, and manually look through everything.

What had happened was that on Snow Leopard I had installed Microsoft Office 2011, which came with newer versions of Arial, etc. I ingested those into FontExplorer and removed the older Snow Leopard versions of those fonts from /Library/Fonts. The Lion installer put OS X versions of the following fonts back into /Library/Fonts:

Arial Bold Italic.ttf

Arial Bold.ttf

Arial Italic.ttf

Arial.ttf

Brush Script.ttf

Times New Roman Bold Italic.ttf

Times New Roman Bold.ttf

Times New Roman Italic.ttf

Times New Roman.ttf

...but since the installer didn't know anything about FontExplorer, it naturally couldn't detect the duplicates that were activated in FontExplorer. On the Mac without FontExplorer, it moved the duplicates into /Library/Fonts Disabled.

I have restarted the Mac several times since, opened and closed Safari and it's working now. Honest. Perhaps this will encourage you to try one more thing: In System Preferences, remove the FontExplorer autostart from your account, clean the font caches (perhaps using Terminal like I did) and reboot. You won't have a lot of fonts that way, but if Safari is now happy, then you know FontExplorer is loading something bad (I've read elsewhere that the Helvetica and Times Fractions fonts could be causing problems as well).

I did a clear font cache with Onyx after having this issue as well. It seemed to clear things up for a while.

Several hours later it crept up again, but on different sites. It's no longer happening to me on Google search results, but is happening on Twitter, VersionTracker.com, and a couple others. Sometimes it's all the fonts on the page, sometimes it's not.

I've reinstalled Suitcase Fusion 3, and reinstalled my fonts, cleared the font cache, nada.

The issue ONLY happens in Safari - Firefox and Chrome don't seem to have it happen.

My font set was the same as it was w/ Snow Leopard, which leads me to think that it is a Lion/Safari bug.

It seems that what I have discovered is this problem has nothing to do with duplicates, chache cleaning, Font Managers or restarts, but Safari's inability to handle OpenType (PostScript Flavored). Turn off fonts in that format and the problem goes away. Because this is not a problem for Firefox it leads me to believe there is something wrong with Safari.

I have tons of OpenType (PostScript flavored) fonts and they work on both machines (with and without FontExplorer). Perhaps there are specific ones that break? (Mine aren't special, some are Adobe - both Pro and Std sets - but most come from small design houses via MyFonts.com).

Same here. I have OT fonts, and no problems.

Perhaps the introduction of another font manager?

If you have a professional-gauge one AND Font Book, maybe they conflict.

We've always been warned by Kurt Lang, our resident font expert, to always undo FB when installing another font manager.

This is just speculation, but I wonder whether those who have problems (with no duplicate fonts) are replacing Lion's system Truetype fonts with Postscript versions. Historically, doing that to Helvetica Narrow has caused trouble....

I give up, I've tried all of the things listed above -- guess I'm just going to use Firefox and stop using Safari until they fix this - which is kind of a huge pain considering I'm a web designer.

There might be another problem related to font managers. Check your console log for the following:

If you manage the system fonts in the font manager, then the Safari sandbox would prevent it from reading the font file. Firefox and most other apps aren't sandboxed, which would explain why those would work.

Those may be the only fonts (plus /User/yourname/Library/Fonts) that Safari is allowed to use. Anything less than this, trouble.

And here's how to fix the sandbox error (this is not for the faint of heart):

Edit the file

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit2.framework/WebProcess.app/Contents/Reso urces/com.apple.WebProcess.sb

(you'll have to have Administrator privileges to save it back)

And after the line

(home-subpath "/Library/Fonts")

add

(home-subpath "/Documents/Fonts/FontExplorer X/Font Library")

Your font manager's database probably lives elsewhere, so adjust the path accordingly.

Quit and restart Safari, and there shouldn't be any more sandbox error messages in the console log.

Ultimately, the font manager vendors will have to update their tools to make these changes automatically. Starting November, all app store apps will have to be sandboxed, so I suspect there will be a lot more of these problems in the future.

A few days have passed, and I seem to be OK again. I haven't run across the A's in boxes in Safari again. If it helps, here's what worked for me after trying a number of unsuccessful fixes. I first disabled all fonts except those in system/library/fonts and made sure there were no duplicates in that folder. I then reactivated my fonts starting with /library/fonts and made sure to skip any fonts that were detected as duplicates. I did all this using FontExplorer X Pro 3. A lot of duplicates were detected. After a restart, things have been working well again.

My *GUESS* as to what happened is that I had moved the Apple fonts from /library/fonts to FontExplorer's library at some time in Snow Leopard, and as a result, the Lion Installer reinstalled them. When the system restarted the installed fonts in /library/fonts were activated by default by Lion and the older duplicate fonts I had moved under Snow Leopard were activated by FontExplorer causing a large number of conflicts. Again, just my guess. I'll probably try slowly reactivating my fonts from Office and Adobe again in the next few days. They weren't activated when I upgraded, so hopefully they'll be fine. Thanks.
