Lion and Parallels
I have Parallels 5 on one iMac and Parallels 4 on another.
I will download Lion shortly.
Will my existing Parallels work with Lion?

No. You will need to update to Parallels 6 - the most recent version.
1. Thanks.
2. Bummer.
3. I have a 27 and a 24 Mac. I just need to purchase Lion ONCE for both machines?
4. Upgrade Parallels first, or download Lion first?
3. Right. You should make a copy of the Lion installer application before installing. The Lion installer deletes itself after installation. Copy the saved installer to your other computer for installation.
4. Upgrade Parallels first.
3. Yes, you can download to 5 machines as long as their on the same AppleID.
4. Upgrade Parallels on each machine first then upgrade to Lion. IMHO that would be the wisest way to go.
Of course with each machine test Parallels on each machine after upgrading to ensure it went smoothly. Then when ready to upgrade to Lion backup prior to the upgrade. I'd also recommend unplugging all peripherals too except the keyboard and mouse when upgrading.
1. Thanks.
2. Would it behoove me to wait a week or so before upgrading Parallels and getting Lion.
Are there kinks being found and worked out as we speak?
Other than impetuosity, I have no compelling reason to leap into this.
Your welcome and it's your call on when to upgrade to Lion. I was one of the Beta testers and have been using it since February or so and have seen it go through many revisions. This version is very stable however all software has bugs, if you want to wait thats up to you however I don't think you will have any problems if you upgraded today.
2. Nothing new will happen in a week. Kinks will be or have been found and reported to Apple. If they get fixed it won't be until Apple releases a 10.7.1 update.
If you don't need to upgrade then don't bother. If you're just curious then clone your system to an external hard drive, boot from the clone and install Lion only on the clone. If all is well then you can install Lion on the main system drive or you can skip it.
So, do I need to pay for Parallels on both iMacs?
Thanks.
I don't know how their SLA works, I'd recommend reading it and asking them.
I must warn you about possible problem after upgrade from PD4 and PD5 if you are using Boot Camp based virtual machines. This problem could be easily fixed by using instructions in this article: http://kb.parallels.com/en/111629
I got mine this morning on my iMac and it went very smooth, but long. However, I started in the morning as well to install it on my MacBook Air and just get error messages. This is not good.
I downloaded Parallels 6 without a hitch.
Then, Lion would not install.
WHAT?
Said my HD was locked, or damaged and could not be repaired. Well, my HD was find before I downloaded Lion.
The tech support guy told me to go drastic and reinstall the OS from the box that came with the Mac. Did that, upgraded to 10.6.8. Will try again.
I have found that the Parallels 6 solution on their web site for starting under Lion does not work for me. An error message: The Boot Camp partition /dev/disk0s3 used by Hard Disk 1 is not supported..." keeps repeating anyway when I try the solution.
Could you try to remove hard disk from Boot Camp Virtual Machine configuration, Save it. And then open again - add BootCamp hard disk.
Actually Parallels Desktop 5 works fine on Lion. Try googling "Parallels 5 Lion Launcher", there are several places you can get it from. Download the launcher and use it once to start Parallels 5, from then on it works perfectly fine (without the launcher), like you had it under Snow Leopard.
I believe it must be just a bug from the Parallels Team that version 5 doesn't work yet on Lion without this launcher, as it makes absolutely no sense it wouldn't. Probably there will be an official patch in the next days, but I guess support for version 5 users is slower than for version 6 users.
