Lion and Parallels

I have Parallels 5 on one iMac and Parallels 4 on another.

I will download Lion shortly.

Will my existing Parallels work with Lion?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

In short, this worked! Thanks!

A little more detail:

When I displayed the Parallels 6 Hardware configuration screen for Windows 7, I could not figure out a way to actually "remove" the hard disk from the Boot Camp Virtual Machine configuration. But because I also had a virtual machine image file on the disk for Windows XP, I set the Windows 7 config to actually use that though it was incorrect.... saved that configuration... then went back in and changed it back to the physical Boot Camp drive. At first it looked as if the configuration was now just pointing to the new Lion recovery partition that gets setup on the hard drive. However, after trying to actually start Windows 7, the error messages originally mentioned did not occur and Windows 7 started normally.

Thanks again.

Lemon-kun,

Any chance you could paste a link to th parallels 5 lion launcher you downloaded? I've googled it as you've said without too much success. I'm rather a novice at scripting/terminal stuff; I've found a long list of commands that I could use but not a stand-alone (simple-to-use) launcher. All suggestions gratefully received!

Thank you.

Dear Edward,

same here, no computer genius :-) I have downloaded the launcher from here:

http://art-domains.de/downloads/Launcher.zip

It is a ZIP file containing the launcher and a script. I just double clicked the launcher and then Parallels 5 started. It seems to work as normal, but to be honest I only need it for one single windows app, so I don't know if there are not some hidden bugs – I heard the Parallels Team won't bring an official patch, and there must be a reason for that. However, for me it's good enough.

When I restart my Mac (which I don't do often) and uncheck the "keep the windows open"-box (new in Lion), then I have to start Parallels 5 with the launcher again. But normally, I only used the launcher only once, and everything was like before under Snow Leopard (it's not a big trouble clicking the launcher to start Parallels anyway...)

Yes, you have to pay, however it's cheaper if you upgrade from version 5 – then you are at version 7, which is the current version. The upgrade is 50$ I think.

Every upgrade from Parallels costs money, it's like paying a tax. And then, when you have purchased it, you get cluttered menus with ads like "convenience store", or buy this or that anti-virus-app. Also there are pop-ups from time to time with stuff you should purchase, anti-virus/malware-filter stuff. And when Apple brings an update of the OS, Parallels is happy to announce that you have to upgrade again because your version won't work anymore. I guess their business model is like this because otherwise, most people wouldn't have to upgrade for their one or two old Windows XP apps they need for work. I mean, most people really don't need any of the new features of Parallels Desktop. And then, the newer apps and games (which require good performance of a virtual machine) are quite often cross-platform these days... So, I'd recommend VMWare Fusion, which is not only cheaper but has a less money consuming upgrade cycle (now at version 4, but version 3 came out in 2009 and still works fine under Lion). And of course, if you don't need the smooth interface, go with VirtualBox (a free/open-source emulator).
