my imac has no sound after Lion, the system does not recognize the internal spekers in preferences. How do I make it visible as a choice?

If we have to wait for a patch from Apple, how do you get information to then letting them know this is a serious problem. Part of my job is audio transcription!!

I have no sound

The midi player comes up, but the output does not allow me to choose it and the master volume is stuck on Zero??

I also have rebooted, any other suggestions?

Does anyone know if the mac store will charge me if I take my computer in and let them deal with this mess?

technically challanged on a good day..

Right guys basically a few things to look out:

1) If you have an audio interface or anything of similar use check the drivers wether you have the latest version and if so does it support Lion.

If the drivers don't then either update but if no update you will have to unistall drivers and re install lion.

to do this shutdown your mac and then when starting up hold down cmd+R and follow the steps from there.

2) Check to see if you have any power pc applications installed that use audio if so these could be conflicting with Lion so again like before you will have to uninstall the program and make sure that it is totally gone then re install lion.

If you wish to keep the applications or audio interface because there are no updates for them then you will have to revert back to snow leopard until the updates are available.

Hope this helps

Unlike most posters here, since installing Lion I have internal speakers working OK (Mac Pro tower) but not the external ones (JBL Creature). In System Prefs>Sound I have Internal Speakers, Audio Line-Out Port and Optical digital-out port all showing and selectable, and in Audio Midi set-up I have Built-In Output, Built-In Line Output and Built-In Digital Output all showing and selectable.

My internal speakers work OK under Built-In Output, but the external ones (Built-In Line Output) are kaput. Here's the odd thing, though. The external speakers worked OK for a while (except for one of the tweeters) after Lion, maybe half an hour, and then went dead. Waiting for a software update seems the most sensible thing. Trying to fix this problem by deleting files and doing safe re-boots and all the rest may be a waste of time, and in some cases even harmful. What if the software update comes along and you have screwed up your audio configuration completely in the meantime? Just a thought.

I succeeded in getting my internal audio hardware back (iMac i5 27") probably by repairing permission files ("Zugriffsrechte reparieren" in german) as well, but only after performing this odyssey:

Since Lion was already installed, I had to follow the procedure described here in order to retrieve the installer again following these instructions:

http://www.macyourself.com/2011/07/21/create-your-own-os-x-10-7-lion-boot-dvd-us b-drive-or-sd-card/

After reloading and burning from the bootable Lion-DVD and restarting successfully from it, I chose disk utilites ("Festplattendienstprogramm") and repaired my normal Macintosh HD start partition. Not yet successful: No audio interface, although Youtube always had played. Then I did this: Restart from normal Macintosh HD partition. Re-install lion with the newly loaded lion installer. No success in audio yet. Then repairing permission files and simultaniously connecting my old terratec firewire audio interface. Success: Internal audio normally accessible. Terratec: Not.

Remaining problem: My present audio interface Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 is not yet compatible with 10.7 lion. Okay, that´s what foucrite are working on now. But I dislike that communication between apple, focusrite and customers didn´t take place before customers would install lion.

Jan, your a genius!

I followed your example, burn't a bootable Lion to a USB stick. Repaired my HD in Disk Utilities from that (which had errors), then reinstalled Lion from that drive to my HD and I now have sound! All my internal inputs and outputs are present and correct. Now I just need Focusrite to come up with a driver for Lion.

Thanks you

Ian
