Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

Just to get to the bottom of this, I set up Wireshark to monitor what was happening on my wifi connection. While not a pro at this, the messages clearly indicate something odd about the DHCP handshaking right at the start of the connection protocols. I sent the Wireshark file to AE via bugreporter. Then to amuse myself I used Time Machine to go back to an earlier build before DP4 where I don't remember having problems. Sure enough 11A419 (DP2 perhaps) has absolutely no problems on the same machine that the DP4 and GM builds cannot hold a wifi connection on. Not only is it the same MacBook 4,1, but it also has the same software installed exactly excluding the OS. So what does it prove? DP2 works and GM doesn't. Something Apple coders did between the two has caused this problem for some of us. I am typing this mesage from this machine and the wifi has been fst and solid for 30 minutes.

Now I think it is a case of letting Apple find the ****** bug in the code and issuing a patch.

Yes - a very frustrating wifi problem. Bought our first Apple product for the wife - the new Macbook Air 3 days ago. Our first experience was owning an Ipad (we won it in lucky draw..) which convinves us to try the macbook. After the long wait for a refreshed MBA - very deflated with the wi fi problem.

A mistake perhaps to have not purchased a normal laptop instead. Wifi keep disconnecting every few minutes - it worked fine with my other Window based laptop and Ipad. Have spend a few hours browsing internet for solution and called the Apple support. No joy yet.

Especially frustrating that there seems to be no official fix - only the routine 'go through all the steps' with the apple helpdesk which is obviously not working.

Does apple refund policy cover the above? my wife certainly wants to return the MBA (i am using my window based work laptop at home). A non working wi fi sounds like a pretty defective product to me.......

Back on my Mac, disabling wireless N network as suggested on my router was not a good idea, connection kept falling over every 5 seconds. Enbabled wirless N again and my connection is more stable in that it falls over every couple minutes but still falls which it never did under SL.

Whilst I doubt I will never get the upgrade on a disc but I would hate to rely upon my net connection for the upgrade.

Apple are you going to aknowledge the problem.

One plus with Wifi Problems :-( . I'm buyed a iMac 27" this past saturday. With Snow Leopard all works like a charm, with lion... the Mac seems to be "charmed"....

Now I'm at work, but many people seems to report some problems with DHCP, at home, i have DHCP but with Mac Fixed Address. May be this configuration part of the problem? I'm try to test the same without that. By otherwise, i hope that apple publish a patch for this problem. May be 10.7.2? 🙂

Regards from Spain.

Hello Everyone;

After a whole day dailing with the problem, now I can say that I have finally fixed the problem, how?

As sugested in one of the first posts, I turned on my iMac in Safe Mode (turning on the computer with the Shift key pressed until you see the wheel, this suposedly clean thingd on your computer, why not, it makes sense and it should be true. Then I restarted again the computer but the problem was still there. Then I did a couple of things, first I moved the wifi to the top of the services, and removed all the networks that I have been connected in the past leaving only my home wifi. When I restarted the computer, my iMac finally started with the wi-fi working.

I hope this helps,

The July 24 post from julianfromardmore describes the process that an Apple Support tech went through with me and it did the trick!!

Like many who have posted here, my problems began after an install of Lion. This fix was just applied and tested so I haven't had much experience yet to say if it will last but it sounds like it will. I will repost the bad news if it comes around to that.

One other thing: in my case, I was using a private network from an Airport Extreme base station as of the time I installed Lion. I can't help but wonder if that was part of the problem. However, since so many seem to have had this issue after installing Lion, I am thinking the private network status was not part of the problem; just something that was fouled up in connection with the Lion install.

Ok - scratch that.

After returning to my Mac just a little later, the same problem reappeared. The Wi-Fi connnectin IS fine but for some reason my computer just doesn't make the connection after it has been in sleep mode for some time. If I manually rejoin my network, the connection works & is steady. But the computer just won't find the Wi-Fi initially.

😠

I'VE FIXED MINE!! (i hope)

Hooray - after days of struggling, it was the easiest thing... found on anther forum...

1. Go to Network in system preferences.

2. At the bottom of the left-hand column, there's a plus, a minus and a drop-down options button. Go to the drop-down button and select 'set service .1.1order'.

3. Move wi-fi to the top.

DONE! All seems to be working well again for the timebeing.

I also followed other people's suggestions of adding 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.1.1 to the DNS list under advanced options.

I hope it works for you.. Let me know!

Chaps and Chapesses

I've just done a Software Update check for my iMac that I still have on Snow Leopard. It did a "10.6.8 Supplemental" update.

Accordinging to the MacWorld website , the supplemental update contains, amongst other things,"fixes for several small issues, including transferring information, settings, and applications from your Snow Leopard machine to a Mac running Lion;".

This just might be the answer to your problem. From what some of say something might have gone wrong whenyou upgraded to Lion. Suggest you revert back to Snow Leopard, use the Combo update, then install Lion.

Fingers crossed.

When I changed to Lion I followed the 'preparatory' instructions meticulously; THIS INCLUDED UPDATING TO THE LATEST VERSION OF SNOW LEOPARD, to make it compatible with the Lion upgrade.

It seems that, for me anyway, the 'fixes for several small issues' didn't include one for the Wi-Fi problem. I dread to think what would have happened had I omitted this preparatory procedure!!!

Thanks for the info however - perhaps it's relevant to some of the community who have suffered worse problems than myself.

I found the cause of my problem related to the WiFi issue, but there is no solution that works at this time. When my computer wakes from sleep it won't connect to my WiFi IF TimeMachine is in the middle of a backup to my TimeCapsule. If my MacBook Pro goes to sleep when I am not backing up, then WiFi works fine when I wake my computer from sleep. Apple needs to address this issues in 10.7.1 and I hope it is released soon.

I've been looking through this thread for a while, and I've found a few hacks that seem to work for Lion for me, but there's one problem: my WiFi won't work in Bootcamp either. Why is that? I can understand an OS problem, but running Windows 7 through Bootcamp shouldn't have anything to do with problems in Lion. This points me to a hardware problem, but everything worked fine until I installed Lion. So is it possible that the upgrade is affect Windows 7 in Bootcamp too?

EDIT: I forgot to say something that I think hasn't been mentioned yet. If you seem to be getting a connection but dropping it, try opening a Terminal window and pinging to a website. Then just let that run in the background. It will indefinitely ping to the website, keeping the connection active. And letting it run all day wouldn't use more than 1-2MB of data.

Add me to the growing list of people with wi-fi issues after Lion upgrade... Tonight I spent three hours on the phone with apple care to no avail.. I commend the techs I spoke with as they were very patient and were relentless in their persuit of a solution. I kinda feel bad for them as they were willing to do whatever it took, but simply could not provide a solution. Obviously if the problem is with the code, there is not much the techs could do to help me.

They had me do a data capture and I sent that to them to escalate the issue to engineers, but I am told it will be around 48 hours before I hear anything... Like other here, I use 'y computer for business and need it to perform as expected... My business is based online, my site has a blog, and I Ned to be able to communicate with pele online as well.

Sorry I cannot provide a solution, but I can contribute to the growing number of folks with the issue.

I had a problem with wireless but I check and at now partial solve these problem.

- Uninstall antivirus (sophos antivirus in my case)

- check flash update (there is a new stable version for lion)

- check accessories in system preferece (spice race in my case)

- update all program and app you have install

- fix disk permissions

At now my wireless is stable, I think the problem is not Lion nut the third part software.
