Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

> As I mentioned, it may seem clear, but it's not.

We're up to 17 pages of "discussion" in this thread.

Any time there's a software upgrade, some folks are going to have problems. When that software upgrade affects millions of people, even if only a tiny percentage of them have problems, it could be enough to generate 17 pages of comments on a support forum.

In this case, it is clear that there is an issue with the upgrade. There are just too many people who are saying EXACTLY the same thing -- "I have many devices that are using the same network and working fine; my [fill in the blank] was working fine before I upgraded; now it does not."

Yes, it's not unusual for back-level firmware to cause a problem with a version upgrade of the OS that begins exercising function that is fixed or added in the firmware update that's missing. But several folks here, including myself, have checked the version of their firmware and it's up to date.

It's not unusual for incopatibilities between vendors to show up with a software upgrade. But several folks here, including myself, are using Apple network gear. If there's an incompatibility it should have been discovered by pre-release testing.

So while it's appropriate to give advice to people who are having this issue to check their firmware level or RAM or whatever, I really think that the volume of reports of exactly the same issue in this thread indicates that there is a software issue related to the upgrade. The fact that I saw exactly this issue with the previous upgrade reinforces my personal opinion. This appears to be a pretty common problem even though it is probably affecting only a tiny percentage of upgrading users.

Could not agree more.

The sheer volume of complaints and and press on the issue point to a software bug in the wifi.

Also lets look @ the situation we have.

A brand new Imac 27 inch I7 with 4gb of ram and 2Tb storage. and all the bells and whistles to go with it.

So its not like we have an old machine upgrading to lion.

This machine is the latest model and a matter of two days old..

So I'm 100 percent to say that something is wrong with the lion o.s in the wifi department and no matter how much apple want to point at firmware, routers or third party this and that.

You dont have to be an apple genius to work that out...

No problem - I am glad the fix I posted worked for you too!

I wish more people spent time actually trying the fix I posted instead of just ranting about Lion - Let's face it, they have had what, almost a million and a half installations of Lion, with a relatively small handful of issues... Considering how many of us have unique hardware and software installations, I would say that is not bad for ANY operating system. Did it suck that I was affected? - Sure, but by no means am I going to switch to a PC over it, and I installed Lion KNOWING that it was a brand new product, and may have some minor issues to be resolved.

OK, should it work perfectly right from the installation? Sure, but I am willing to bet that they were not able to test Lion with EVERY known combination of hardware and software installations.

It could be that we all have some similar program on our computers, or perhaps some hardware causing the issue, or perhaps something we did in a past software installation, or removal, or it could be that we all have similar installed hardware in the affected computers... Whatever the case, even with 15k views of this thread, and other similar posts on the new, that represents a very small fraction of installations, so Lion without question is an overwhelming success overall.

That said, I encourage everyone to try the fix I have posted in an earlier post - It definitively worked for me, and I am quite certain it will work for quite a few of you as well. It may not work for everyone, but I can assure you that I am back up and running without issue.

Rant? fix? why should I fix a brand new mac that over 2 grand has been spent on.

For your information I followed exactly what apple has suggested and not one, not one apple genius has come up with a solution to this very expensive computers problem.

I did fix it by using a cable and will continue to use a cable until apple FIX the problem they have created with LION.

Quite frankly if you purchased a 2 grand mac two days ago and the wifi didnt work correctly would you spend countless hours trying to make it work with no success and still feel a satisified customer?

Your fix did not work just like all the others suggested.

Its not the fix that is the issue its the fact they still will not acknowledge a software problem and this whiter than white we dont make mistakes head up rear end attitude.

There are problems and surely a bug.

In addition to the problem with iWeb that I've already posted about (can't publish/ the system doesn't recognize the connection), I periodically get two error message boxes with the text:

"There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type "file": are not supported. Yes, two boxes, one after the other.

Hi William

Couple of quick questions same thread and problem related but maybe this will help us out.

1) Is there / are there any updates for Lion in the pipeline/due for release in the next few days, and if so what fixes do they have included/covered?

2) When trying to update Java as per suggested by this threat, I used Spotlight as described, and when I selected Java Preferences application, with 4 buttons/tabs, however my Java was listed as Java SE 6 (32 and 64 bit) on Version 1.6.0.26-b03-383. There is no option to 'update it' although I did (which was a waste) go to Apples site and download and install it again, which made no difference obviously 🙂

In honesty why would we have to do all these different fix attempts/tries/procedures, surely if it worked fine under Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger etc etc) the upgrade should just do it all, and we shouldn't have to go 'poking' about under the bonnet? Surely Apple must be aware of this huge message thread and be working on a fix or document. Is it not possible for someone to give us an update to say this is a known problem and we are working on it, or maybe even a small hot-fix or patch to clear up rogue or maybe problematic files from an upgrade or maybe even a montitoring or trace program we can run that runs diagnostics and uploads it back to them?

I agree that it is easy to sound like Mr Angry when these things happen and perhaps to lose a sense of proportion (no one died!).

But surely the real point here is that there are just so many posts about this issue. Are we really just seeing the vocal few who have problems they cannot resolve? Or is it more likely that the vast majority cannot be bothered spending time "ranting" and just give up at the first hurdle? Hard to say, surely.

And don't you find the release as a download only in advance of a later "proper" release suggests something? Apple would not be the first software house that released a half finished product to allow the great unwashed to discover its faults for them. Am I being paranoid (I know THEY are watching)?

I upgraded to Lion several days ago and I have my I-Mac from late 2009 hooked up via wi-fi on Verizon Fios. Since the upgrade my Wi-fi for my entire home has been affected. All of a sudden, no devices in my home get an internet signal. Ipad 2, Apple TV, cell phones, PC Laptop, and this MAC. They all get a strong router signal but no connectivity. Verizon has spent hours on the phone with me running tests, 3 different routers, and a field call. No hardware issues here - my connectivity just sporadically dies out- SINCE INSTALLING LION. Snow Leopard ran flawlessly since I installed the software, I never had an issue with the computer or wi-fi before the Lion update. Let me know if anyone has ideas please.

I think I owe Apple an excuse, after further investigation it seems my connection problems are not related to Lion (or at least not the majority, wifi still has some minor stability glitches) but the largest part of our problems seem to originate from a b0rken Draytek DSL router. I noticed the router was rebooting every 7 to 10 minutes thus causing the wifi connection also to drop. First I thought the router was broken but after a SW upgrade of the Draytek it was fine again. But the funny part is this really started the minute we upgraded Lion. Coincidence? Dunno... But at least my Wifi seems much better now, altough latency is still a bit jumpy with some incidental packetloss.

But seeing the huge amount of complaints here there is still obviously something wrong with Lion. But perhaps there *is* a relation between Lion and my router problems. So it might not hurt to check the SW of yout Wifi AP and also your DSL router.

You are all simply kidding yourselves if you think this problem may be a hardware issue, or a update for your routers, or firmware for them. This problem IS the operating system, period. It is selective in its level of dysfunction, but it is a dysfunction that no one has been able to resolve. To think that apple somehow builds an os that works for wireless signals that only are configured for an apple wireless card is ridiculous.

I have had associates try to connect in many different places and the same issue exists everywhere.

To think that a company that depends so much on internet connections released this os as is, and has not attempted to fix it, is insulting to devoted mac owners.

There is a clear message one can send. Ask for a refund. It does not work. It does not have the single most important feature of a mac working, wifi.

Why whatever they did to the os made our machines no longer macs is THEIR problem to solve.

Do you remember when you opened your new Mac with Snow Leopard on it, and it started, and it found your available netwworks, and it stayed connected to them? I do, as do so many others who smiled when that happened and said, it's a mac. That did not happen with this os. It failed from the start, and continues to fail, and it is apples issue to resolve, but they are moving on it in a way that is starting to resemble the debt ceiling debate in Washington. It's broken and it's not getting fixed.

Hi everyone,

Browsing the web via Safari suddenly Apple multilanguage inf has showed up to restart the system with system button. So I did it. After rebooting I found out that I do not have a wifi connection and what is more the statement that "wifi card is not installed".

Few days ago I installed Lion. There was nothing like that under Snow Leopard.

I called to Apple Poland and via email I received a software: Capture Data which may collect and use the information about system, airport etc. by Apple.

So now I need to be patient and wait few days for an answer from Apple.
