Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

I was having the same problem with wifi constantly dropping out, and Facetime no longer working, after I installed Lion.

I followed the suggestion, from someone in this forum, and set Auto Proxy Discovery (Network Preferences>Advanced>Proxies).

Has worked like a dream since and facetime now works too. I have my fingers crossed, only a few hours so far but much, much better.

OK, here’s another data point.

Yesterday, I went back again to the Buffalo Air Station site where I first had problems connecting after a Lion upgrade install but that were solved by a clean install (disk partition/format) of Lion.

I had no problem making the initial connection and things seemed good and fast at first but during the course of a 4-hour session, I was getting times where facebook and google would not come up in any browser and email could not be received/sent. Leaving the connection for a few minutes and then trying again would sometimes fix it. Switching wifi on and off sometimes would and sometimes wouldn’t although the connection bar was always showing full strength.

I captured the whole session on wireshark again and sent it to Apple Bug Reporter like last week. Nothing back from them but they cannot be ignoring this issue–there are too many youtube videos and other reports showing the problems.

Just have to wait for 10.7.1 I suppose.

I’m amazed at the cone of silence from the well-known pundits like Gruber, Ihnatko, and others.

click wifi and go advanced then go to the proxies page and uncheck the auto proxy descovery i guess this is the resolution

Hi to all,

after reading all the posts, it seems the very most of you have dropping / slow connection issues while the reception is still o.k. My problem is, that my mac mini can't even see available networks.

This is my story:

I bought a new C2D mac mini, shipped with SL 10.6.4 which worked perfect for a couple of weeks.

After I updated to 10.6.8 the wi-fi was gone (downloaded the online update, installed it, reboot -> wi-fi gone).

The hardware is shown as still present but can't see any wireless network even though three different are there with five Windows7 notebooks connected. Tried everything to no avail.

--Went back to 10.6.4 -> reboot ->wi-fi o.k.

--Updated up to 10.6.7 -> wi-fi o.k.

--Updated to 10.6.8 -> wi-fi gone

--went back to to 10.6.7 -> wi-fi o.k.

--Installed Lion -> wi-fi gone.

All updates where done by keeping all documents and preferences (no clean install).

After three days offline under Lion (including some cold starts) suddendly wi-fi came back again and worked perfect. Yesterday I downloaded the trial version of Adobe CS5, installed it reboot and... guess what ...wi-fi gone.

The next step is to uninstall CS5 and see what happens. This is my first Mac, so I'm kinda helpless...

I have had this problem of Lion dropping my WiFi connection at random since installing the OS on my 27inch iMac. Strangely it does not affect either my 15inch MacBook Pro nor my 13inch MacBook Air both now running Lion. The only difference is that with the 27inch iMac I reacted to a prompt to install Java Runtime without really thinking and with many Apps still open including possibly a web browser (Chrome.) On the laptops I installed Java Runtime very carefully from Apple's site with all Apps shutdown. I thought removing Java Runtime and reinstalling it carefully had cured the loss of WiFi - but NO! I now run the 27inch iMac directly off a LAN cable since the router is right next to the computer. This seems to be the only cure. I suggest there is a very real problem that Apple needs to invesigate and resolve.

Running MBP, just upgraded to Lion a few days ago... My wifi shows I'm connected, but it will not load any web pages. I tried to delete the network and reenter the data for the connection (network name, PW, etc) still will not load any pages. Did not have this problem before the upgrade. Also, my Keychain Access quit working from the dock, I removed it from the dock and added it again, now it is working, in case any of you had the same problem. I hope someone can give me an idea on where to go from here?

To settle once and for all that it isn't my hardware I installed Windows 7 via Bootamp and lo and behold, I haven't had an issue all day with wifi. It's safe to say I'm going to keep using Windows on my expensive paperweight (mid 2010 MBP) until 10.7.2 comes out. This is ridiculous...I reset my router to factory settings before last weekend and it worked again for a day or 2, then last night it decided to completely stop connecting to anything, including my personal hotspot on my iPhone, again. Windows had no problem connecting on the first try.

Sorry, the Auto Proxy Recovery was a short term fix, ie not fix at all.

I have several devices running on the network, IMac, iPad and several iPod touches which come and go with visitors.

The network seems stable as long as the iMac running Lion doesn't access the network. When it does it often can't connect and often seems to make the network unavailable to the other devices. When this happens the fix is to turn the power off to the Airport Express.

If it is only the iMac failing then it is sufficient to turn the airport connection off and on in the drop down menu ie a software switch.

The real puzzle is why Apple seems to be MIA? They must know by now that there is a problem. If anyone hasn't send a report to Apple then I suggest you do so.

I'm posting this again because network vanished while is was trying to post it the first time. Apologies if I have doubled up.

Removed cisco linksys router WRT120N and putting in its place a borrowed BUFFALO N WHR-HP_GN. connected the mac and streamed some video from utube.
Initial testing seems that the issue is resolved! I have a feeing Lion has its problems with certain wireless chipsets and not others. My Cisco router uses Atheros Chip and the Buffalo uses a Broadcom Chip which I believe is Intel. Will do more testing today to make sure that the issue is resolved by using another router. If this is the case I do not blame the router manufacturer I blame APPLE!. The previous Snow Leopard had no problem talking to my WRT120N and this router was only 4 months old!, so I would expect the new O.S to talk as good if not better to the same router. The WRT120N is a Cisco Linksys router so its not some cheapy back street piece of kit. If it is the case the lion is at fault with this router I would expect apple to front the cost of me replacing it or at the very least refund the cost of Lion. fair and square...

wow! edited by HOST!

Seems apple do not like me posting a link to my facebook community page regarding this issue.

Ok I wont do that from now on however i'm sure its not against the TOS that if you do a search on fb for apple lion wifi problems you will find the community.

since doing more testing I have noticed a patern forming with ATHEROS wifi chipsets not working but BROADCOM (intel) ones do!

Anyone interested in coming to the community and posting their router make and model so I can check what chipset it uses is more than welcome.

though it seems apple do not like to promote discussion of facebook community pages since editing my last post.

so I wont post the ful URL here for obvious reasons.

tsk tsk tsk apple I never took you to be the great firewall of china on discussion.. we are not trying to hurt your precious image but rather get to the root of whats causing this lion problem
