Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

Spent about 30 min with apple, on the phone, today. My problem is that I have two MBP's that I bought in June09. The only difference is that one has higher speed and more RAM than the other. After Lion install. The better MBP works great. The other loses internet connectivity after being awoken from sleep. BTW we are working of a Airport Extreme.

So the Apple tech helped we through a bunch of stuff. We reset the computer, zapped the PRAM, removed some of the preferences, removed all of the preferences, removed and reinstalled the wifi in the network preferences. Nothing worked except restarting the mac or cycling the wifi on and off. And that only worked till it went to sleep again.

The tech felt that the problem was associated with the wake up portion of sleep in that somehow it is sending Leopard info instead of Lion info.

They said that they are working on the issue and that 10.7.1 will be fixing this and other issues.

In the meantime she suggested that I go to genius bar where they could "take apart the machine" and see if they could find out what is going on and fix it.

BTW even though the machines are out of warranty they are treating this like it is a warrant because the Lion software is the issue. Note also that I got help about 1 min after I sent in an email.....so even though the problem is not fixed.....it was good customer service.

OK... there's a pattern emerging!

Following previous posts, I've swapped my ancient Orange Livebox router for a new Belkin Play N600 one (having checked that it uses a broadcom chipset......

.... drum-roll please....

..... wireless now connected perfectly! Super-fast and maintained now for several hours.

It really does look like this is a problem with compatability with certain router chipsets.

So going along with the wireless issues on my end...

2010 13" MBP - Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.100.98.75.6)

2011 27" iMac - Atheros 9380: 4.0.55.4-P2P

Netgear WNDR3700 (Router - dualband broadcasting both G and N networks) - Atheros 9002 series chipset

So here are my issues...(and yes, I've tried pretty much every fix in this thread (8.8.8.8, new network place, reset passwords, WPA2, no security, etc etc)

2010 MBP - connects on both G and N no problem, actually pretty quickly with no wifi drops

2011 iMac - connects to G only, N will connect but will not have any network activity, everything times out

both running Lion

I have a network storage and it's painfully slow to transfer files over G on my iMac... if I was just surfing the web G would suffice no problem... but I need the N speeds for file transfers...

Opening keychain, I found it into the list of "all element" category.

The chain element has the same name of my modem ("alicegate" in my case).

Opening the related card (double click on it), in the 4th filed (my system is in italian, I guess in english the label coud be "localted in") the value was "smb://alicegate".

In general, my feeling is that the key to remove is the one having this value starting with smb://

I hope this can help you: on my iMac, it works, at least up to now ;-)

Hi _R_

Looking to my configuration, my feeling is that the keychain element to look for has the same name of a shared device included in the list of "shared Device" shown on the left bar of your finder.

Get the name of all shared device you have, check them into keychain and, if one (or more than one) of them has the located label set to smb, try to remove it.

THANK YOU !!!! itaylorweb, that solved it for me. So I bought a brand new iMac 21.5" a few days ago and an Airport Extreme. Everything worked great on my old wireless (Netgear) router.

Then fired up the Airport Extreme and all my other Mac devices connected fine wirelessly and wired.

My new iMac (running LION btw) did couldn't connect wirelessly, but I could connect via wire. I thought initially it was b/c I was running Lion Server on it and that may have caused issues. But no.

So went into Network Preferences -> Wi-Fi -> Advanced -> TCP/IP and set "Configure IPv6" to "Link-local only" and it worked!!!!! Thanks "itaylorweb"!!!!!!

I was having problems with my wifi not working when restarting or reconnecting after recovering from sleep. I was able to connect to my network but could not browse it or connect to the internet. when I ran the network troublshooter, no problems where found and "bang" everything would work fine again. After trying Apples first and most important diagnosis step "remove all connected devices". I found that if I have a CD in the drive or a remote storage device connected (Iphone, ipad, usb hard disk) connected via usb during wake or restart, I could not access the network or internet again until running the troubleshooter. With no disc in drive or devices connected I have had no issues since. I do not think this is the correct way things should operate but until something better comes from Apple, this is my fix.
