Can not receive email, password not accepted by server

Keep getting this message:

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Rick's mail” or try again.

The server returned the error: The POP server “pop.teleguam.net” doesn’t support Password authentication. Verify your account settings and try again.

So now what do we do?

Re-entered password and all other settings, talked with internet provider but can not solve problem...........

Yosemite and the Mail program is an unmitigated disaster.

It just does not work even after a 1.5 hour conference call with Apples escalated support. This is on one iMac and one MacPro, our other six iMacs and one laptop are still running Maverick which we will not upgrade until Apple fixes the problem. What is interesting is that Apple has not openly warned us of this problem or even acknowledges the problem exists in communications with it Support Staff.

My advice, Do Not Upgrade to Yosemite and don't buy a new Apple Computer with Yosemite installed.

I have done everything suggested and the only way I can make Mail work is to quit and restart. Then the next time, after "Sleep," I try to "Get new mail" the Activity window is full of spinning barber shop poles for awhile, then "No connections." I quit Mail, reopen it and messages appear as if by magic. How do I reinstall or upgrade to an improved Mail program? Thanks.

Just my $0.02 I rant into this problem after upgrading a system from 10.6.8 -> 10.8.x ... was unable to login as a particular user to an uw-imapd Linux server. Ended up solving my problem by changing the users password to have an exclamation point "!" at the end. No idea why this worked, but the only difference I could find between a working user account and this account was the length of the password being 1 character longer so I added "!" to the end and it started working.
