Having just installed the lion on my mac I noticed that the secure virtual memory option in the general tab in the security preference pane has been removed. Why is this ? Is secure virtual memory the default setting in lion ? Is there a preference file that that one could change the setting ? Not that I would want to - just curious.

Secure Virtual Memory is always on now. You can verify this in Apple > About this Mac > More Info > System Report > Software

Thanks for the verification that lion has secure virtual memory enabled by default but I continue to wonder is there a configuration file that I could change this setting ? ( if I wanted to )

Sure about that?
It is enabled on my machine. I remember somewhere that it was supposed to enabled by default on notebooks and disabled on desktops. Perhaps there is one of those hidden "defaults" command line switches to change it.
Looks like I'll have to do some searching.

This is a screenshot from my imac and as you can see the secure virtual memory is clearly enabled. This is the default setting, I made no changes.

Yep, wasn't suggesting you were lying. Just saying that mine isn't.

I had it turned off running Snow Leopard due to an issue having it enabled was causing.
When I upgraded to Lion, it was disabled, assumedly inherited from the previous SL install.
I recently re-partitioned my SSD, did a fresh, non-tweaked install of SL (with secure memory enabled) and then upgraded to Lion (since, (thanks, apple!)) there's no way to just /install/ Lion without doing an upgrade.
Secure memory seemed to "inherit" the enabled status.
I can't find a "defaults" value that corresponds to the state.
I assume this is a base-configurable option, but effed if i can find it.
