Re: auto save not working with microsoft office on OS Lion
Is there anyone else having issues with the auto-save/versions not working with Microsoft office on the OS Lion Upgrade?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

i think it only works with apple programs (like iwork or preview)
I hope not. I do not like using iwork?
you have to wait for an update from microsoft. Developers have to update their apps in order to take advantage of the new stuff on lion
TextEdit and Preview, plus the just-released upgrades to Pages and Numbers.
That's all so far.
I guess I will have to just wait then.
No, it can work with any app, but the app has to be written to use it.
Hi,
I'm running Lion and I don't see Auto Save feature for TextEdit or Preview...
In fact, I'm seeing the typical "File--> Save" menu in TextEdit..
I'm definitely running Lion (10.7)
Any pointers?
Thanks,
It seems (from some testing I've just done) that:
1. It's not an explicit choie or preference - it's just there, in the background, invisible
2. Your textedit document has to have been saved once (i.e given a name), or you've reopened a previously saved document
If those conditions are met, Textedit will keep the doc saved.
My test was:
Open existing docuement
Make changes
Wait a few seconds
Quit Textedit
Reopen Textedit - and there's the doc with all the changes.
I ran the test again, quitting Textedit immeditaley I had made the change - and it saved the change successfully.
Hope that helps
at this point it is only working on text edit. i guess the rest will be coming in an update.
using office i have noticed that when i open word or excel, they open to the last document i was using, as well as opeing the new document.
noticed the same thing with photoshop.
This is the Resume fucntion at work. When you reopen an app (I'm not sure this works universally yet) it reopens, or tries to, whatever docs or windows were open last time you had the app open.
There have been some under the hood changes to how apps are closed; in some circumstances (I'm not yet clear on all the details), the app doesn't completely close, but a kind of stub remains open but hidden.
As someone else mentioned, Versions is a OS X Lion feature that has to be implemented in the software you're using. As soon as Microsoft updates office (See: Office for Mac 2020 😉) Versions will likely be completely implemented. Otherwise, you can play about with the feature by creating a textedit document, saving it once with a filename, then opening it, making changes, then closing it. Note it doesn't prompt you to save. Do this a few times. Then reopen the document, and select File > Revert to Saved, and watch the magic happen.
Enjoy!
It will take some time to write a few lines of code. 🙂
But I highly recommend using iWork, which does it, is better, faster, cleaner, simplier and DOES read/write MS Office!
Watch some videos about it and you'll see, why it's so better.
Auto-Save feature is not visible, it just works. Nevertheless not every app supports it.
Using iWork is fine for many people, but although it will read and write MS Office files, it does not do so perfectly. If you're working with Office documents from clients (as I do) or other organisations, using iWork can cause problems, especially if layout is important.

That's because it's automatic. See OS X Lion: About Auto Save and Versions
