Quicktime not opening AVI files in Lion.

I just installed OS X Lion but when I try to open any AVI video with Quicktime that reads "The Document <filename> could not be opened. A required codec is not available." I clicked the "Tell Me More" button and I redownloaded the DIVX codec but my files still don't open with quicktime. Is it possible that my codec is not compatible with Quicktime for Lion? But then again the Quicktime application is still the same, it hasn't been updated since Snow Leopard. Is anyone else encountering this?

I upgraded to Lion and am unable to open .avi files using Quicktime. Had no issues prior to upgrade.

Hope some folks are still checking this thread. I've tried all the solutions listed above, but still encounter an "This operation could not be performed" when I try to open an AVI with Quicktime on Lion. Here are a few notes of what I've tried...

1) Search for DIVX and 3ivx codex. Didn't find any. I do have two codecs in the Library/Quicktime folder and a handful of codes in the System/Library/Quicktime folder. All seem to be produced by either Apple or Quicktime, but I still attempted to fix the problem by removing them to no avail.

2) Unistalled and Reinstalled Perian (a few times). Also, tried installing version 1.2.2. to no avail.

3) Click on the "Open in 32 bit mode" checkbox on the Information page of the application. No dice!

Note: I can see the movie by previewing it in Finder and I verified that the file opens just fine with VLC.

Any other options would be greatly appreciated!!!

Back after I installed Lion in mid-July, I used a work-around by using Pacifist to extract Quicktime 7 from my Leopard install disk and install it in the Utilities folder with Applications on Lion.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678.

Basically, I only use Quicktime 7 Pro (to playback .avi and other video). I don't have a need to use the extra fuctionality built in Quicktime X to save video, etc. I uninstalled Perian but continue to use Flip4Mac Studio 2.4.0.11 with the block checked to open .avi files.

Good luck. I was hoping the Quicktime issue would be resolved in OS 10.7.2, but this thread just keeps going on, like the Energizer Bunny.

I had this issue and attempted to resolve it by removing all instances of Xvid from System/Library/Quicktime but it didn't work. I then realized that there were possibly other Xvid files in the User/Library/Quicktime folder but User/Library is hidden in Lion. To access that folder, go to Finder, click Go from the Finder menu at the top of the screen and then hold down the Option key. Library will appear as an available folder. Click Library, locate the Quicktime folder and the source of the problem may likely be sitting there; more Xvid files. I removed those files from the hidden User Library and now Quicktime X in Lion works as expected with Perian installed.

I finally switched to Lion and had the exact same problem(s). My solution was as follows:

first, i went to ~/Library/Quicktime/ and deleted all of the add-ons (xVid, divx, perian). The Library folder is now hidden by default, but you can still access it in Finder by holding the OPTION key and clicking on Go in the menu bar.

second, i uninstalled and trashed any third party programs, such as the Divx Player.

third, i re-installed the most recent version of Perian (1.2.3). as per advice elsewhere in this thread, i did not install any other codecs. Perian only.

fourth, i rebooted the machine.

VOILA. everything works perfectly, and all .avi files play ... except, i still couldn't play .mkv files for some reason, so i installed the Plugin for Perian and QT-X (38286) which can be found here: http://foolrulez.org/blog/2009/09/snow-leopard-playing-mkv-with-perian-and-quick time-10/. i know it says for snow leopard, but it fixed the problem in lion. now .mkv files work perfectly too.

I also have Flip4Mac installed with no problems as yet.
