BTW, it's not related to your machine, it's definitely on the airport's side. The 10.7.3 upgrade won't fix this.

I really think it's *not* a problem with my AirPort Express. My iPhone can connect from anywhere in the house, as can my friend's MacBook which is still running Lion (10.6), but my MacBook can only connect if it is in the same room as the router--a problem that only occured after I upgraded to 10.7 (albeit several weeks aftter).

Also, my MacBook has difficulties connecting to any WiFi routher that's out of its line of sight. For example, if I am in my office at work I cannot connect to the WiFi network, but if I take my MacBook into the hallway where the router is mounted to the ceiling I can connect with no problem

I think that Apple introduced a new bug with the new firmware that they distributed for the Time Capsule a short while ago. Ever since I upgraded, there is no way to maintain a connection to the TC wifi network. I can connect fine to another network I have in my house, but I can't connect to the TC network. The connecting computer gets an IP address, but then it looses it again and the "Time Out" error appears. It's getting frustrating! I never had this problem before the new firmware! Why is Apple giving us such a headache?!?!?

I've never used Apple's Time Capsule, so I can't speak as to whether or not Apple introduced a bug with it.

My problem is that I'm going to public networks that used to work without problem, and I now get the timeout error message and resulting connection failure. I tend to think that the routers are not likely Apple-based, given that these are in commercial establishments. (I know, they could be Apple, but I just tend to think these folks are using more industrial solutions.)

It's hard to ask a business to reset or reboot their routers because your machine won't connect, when everyone else works fine. (As does my iPhone!)

So I really think something is happening on the Apple wifi client side of things, perhaps in addition to changes on their Airport/Time Machine "server" products.

We just purchased an iPad and MacBook Air and have a new netgear router from our provider.

iPad works fine but the MacBook has all these problems listed and as a new Apple I am a little lost in the solutions. So for example exactly where are those firewall files?

I was experiencing the same wifi connectivity problem and found the solution that worked for me. Because I am grateful anyhow to the apple community for providing their personal experiences and solutions, I am publishing my solution so that it may help those that are without 2.4Ghz wifi connectivity. As like so many others, the connection would only work using the 5Ghz radio frequency and not the 2.4Ghz. FYI, as a veteran electronics engineer that previously owned and managed their own Verizon wireless retail store, radio frequency emissions do produce negative effects on the human body. This is a very complex science. My point is, please utilize the time and day schedule to disable your wireless signal (found on newer model routers) during the night while sleeping to reduce exposure to all biological life.

My symptom was that I could see the wireless ID trasmitted from my router on the laptop, attempt to connect by providing my password / (Also known as a) WPA-PSK key, however the window would shake side to side and not allow connectivity.

My solution was that I had to click on Advanced Setting > Wireless MAC Filter and add the MAC address of the wireless card that is installed within the laptop computer. This can be found by clicking on the apple, located on the menu bar (upper left hand corner) > system preferences > network > wifi > advanced (lower right hand corner of window) > hardware. Mac Address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx < copy this hexidecimal string, (minus the semi colons) by manually copying it into the "Add" text box of your wireless router user interface, click the "Add" button followed by the "Apply" button (if required for your make & model router).

I myself had contacted apple technical support to seek a solution, after speaking with the support representative for approximately an hour, I can see how today's technology is simply becoming increasingly complex and such solutions may not be readily available. The next time I call apple support, I will provide my solution to hopefully assist the next customer.

Let's begin with a clear description of your problem, along with the make & model of your network router.

We just bought a MacBook Air and iPad two weeks ago.

We have a Netgear router that is only a few months old, as a free lease from our broadband provider.

I can understand there are a lot of possible settings with wi-fi but cannot believe this problem has been asked about for a couple of years!!!

I am sick to death of my Windows desk-top but man has this problem slammed the breaks on another Apple purchase.

I went to the local Apple store tonight down download the latest updates, (two hour est at Starbucks) but came home to run them as my battery wasn't topped off. I do not know if they ran or not. We had much better connection when we first came home but wi-fi would shut down when the MBA went to sleep.

I Google that problem (after a week seeing my router but not connecting, ie timeout) find a fix (Renew DHCP) and I am now back to the constant timeout error and cannot confirm if the Software updates ever installed (I am at 10.7.2).

My local Apple Store suggested I just buy a router from them...If we weren't standing in front of them I'd think I was talking on the phone to someone in a 3rd world country reading from a script.

Wireless-N 150 Router WRN1000 v2

Also I downloaded the 10.7.3 update but delayed installing it.

How do I install it without wi=fi access ?

Software Update won't run without it.

Essentially, it says you need to try to connect with neighbors Wi-Fi. Enter a wrong password. Then connect to your network. That time it will work flawlessly. There are some good screenshots on that page.
