A connection timeout occurred 802.11n

I just upgraded my i7 MBP to Lion. I connect to an Airport Express running in dual mode. I can connect to 802.11g but I get this error when I try to connect to the 802.11 5ghz side.

Failed to join "network"

A connection timeout occured

I have rebooted the Mac and the Airport Express. No luck.

I found that the following two steps solved the problem for me:

  1. (as already suggested in this thread) delete the reference to the SSID in the Keychain Access app.
  2. Rename the SSID for the 802.11n connection in your Airport/Router

I'm specifically replying to this post on the thread:

I am having the same problem connection to "n" on an Asus rt-n56u router.

Below is the log you recommended.

Thank you,

I just upgraded my early 2008 MBP and am having the same issue. The strange thing is wifi seems to work at my home and school, but not at my girlfriends apartment. She's using a Belkin router, so I'm wondering if some setting in the router itself may be the culprit. Earlier I saw someone mention that the wifi country code may be part of the problem, and I noticed that mine seems to think it's South Korea. Is there any way anyone has found to change or reset this country code?

Thanks,

Shane

One last followup ... the timeout issue only happens on 5GHz 802.11n, no issues with 2.4GHz.

The issue seems to be intermittant , think that is why so many post different solutions here.

A solution appears to work, but it was just luck that the connection occured.

Going to take the laptop to a Apple Store see if they can offer anything else to try or maybe switch the internal wireless card.

I deleted the two preference files

com.apple.alf.plist

com.apple.alf.plist.lock

as Pieter VLB said.

Removed all entries starting with Airport from the keychains as dtptacula said.

Removed the Wi-Fi service in the network panel and restored it as TGMD said.

Re-entered the WPA key on Airport discovery.

All now working.

Thank you people.

I understand why airport extreme users are so mad after the 7.6.1 upgrade. Once thing that worked for me:

- Airport utility, click on your airport extreme device

- then go to edit tab > then wireless > then Wireless options

- my radio mode was set to n/g (first option) by default.

Everything has been working since I changed the radio mode to "n only (5GHz). Knocking on wood...

Hope this will help others.

I'm having the same problem: getting a "Connection Timeout" error when trying to connect to WiFi networks. I'm using an early 2008 MacBook, OSX 10.7.3. For me the problem is not specific to any one network. I have the problem at home (AirPort Express) and at work (Cisco router) and anywhere else I've tried to connect.

For me, I have no problem connecting to a network when there is a direct line of sight between my MacBook and the wireless router. However, if I am in the next room, or anywhere where the WiFi signal has to travel through a wall, I get the connection timeout error--even if the network appears in the WiFi menu with a full signal.

I've tried all the solutions mentioned in this thread but none of them have worked permanently. I just updated to 10.7.3, but the problem persists.

Hi Daren,

It was exactly the same for me on my macbook (circa 2010). Even after changing the radio mode to "n" only, I noticed that the laptop had to be in the line of sight. On top of that my old powerbook which I use exclusively for music, couldn't connect to the network. So I had to switch back to compatible n/g radio mode. Since then all laptops have been working ok.

Just so you know, I went to the apple store yesterday after doing hard reset on my airport extreme twice. They themselves did nothing else than a hard reset and it worked in the store for a sustained period of time. I went back home, plugged the airport extreme to my RR router and even though the extreme was beaming a green light, I couldn't access the network with either one of my laptops. An error "connection timeout" would pop up in the authentication panel, or a warning pop up with "a connection timeout occurred".

So I reset the factory settings, gave the network a new name once again. In the beginning the reset failed twice and airport utility output a message saying "an unexpected error occurred". I tried various combinations of turning off the RR router and the airport extreme, then eventually I walked a few steps away from the router and the signal came back.

BTW, it's not related to your machine, it's definitely on the airport's side. The 10.7.3 upgrade won't fix this.

Obviously, Apple needs to fix whatever bug they've introduced in the firwmware.

A connection timeout occurred 802.11n
