Plug-In Failure in Netflix.

I updated Safari to 5.1 today, and my Netflix Instant has stopped working. It will show the circles as loading, then it may or may not flash the red Netflix screen which will disappear and in its place will be a 'Plug-in Failure' box. More often than not, it will skip the Netflix screen and either be blank or have the 'Plug-In Failure' box. I tried searching 'Netflix Plug-In Failure Safari 5.1' and all of the websites say that this problem has been fixed. Obviously not. As a side note, my Safari seems to be running slower, even though I have full bars in Airport. I don't know whether this is a symptom or a side effect. Everything else seems to be running fine.

I had the same problem and I did the same update. All you need to do is update the plug-in Silverlight.

That should do it

HI fellows.

I've been experiencing the same issue. I've tried all the solutions you guys suggested and none of them worked so far.

When I try to stream online movies form netflix it either shows the plug-in failuer message or just freezes. (Safari, Firefox and Chrome. All of them show the same thing.)

Now, what is really interesting: If I log in as a guest user, the online streamming works.

It really bothers changing desktops only to watch movies. Can you guys help me out? I'm going crazy with that.

I don't have any other failures or complaining about other apps that I run.

perhaps wholly unrelated, but/and, although this fix was great for the Netflix issue, since then, or thereabouts, I am unable to 'read' commercial Cds, but can read copies i've made on a CD recorder. None of the recommended fixes for that have worked. the commercial CDs are readable in other devices including another Mac. Has any one else seen this issue and found a workaround? many thanks. mcm

I was having difficulty watching Netflix instant movies on my Mac because it kept asking me to upgrade my MS Silverlight program, so I started looking at this forum.

All these people puzzling over how to make things work with updated version of Silverlight?

Maybe 'm missing something basic here: You have to update a Microsoft plug in to watch a Netflix video on a Mac? What effin century are we living in, dudes?

Yeesh- must be the wrong forum, excuuuuse me...

Yeah, I've tried downloading the latest MS Silverlight multiple times and restarting the browser/computer in different combinations. I'm pretty much at a loss and since I'm not really computer savy I guess I'm going to have to take my computer to a genius bar when I have a chance. My screen won't even do the spinning dots when it tries to play something on Netflix now. It is simply a black screen with no sound or screen icons. Oh, well.

there is a temporary file that can get corrupted if there are problems during netflix streaming operations...

try this:

Quit all open browsers - including this window! You may want to print the following steps.

Click the Finder icon from the Dock at the bottom of the screen.

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Go then Computer.

Click the Macintosh HD icon.

Open the Library folder.

Open the Application Support folder.

Open the Microsoft folder.

Open the PlayReady folder.

If PlayReady folder is missing, visit Microsoft’s support site for help.

Drag the mspr.hds file to the Trash.

EMPTY THE TRASH. if the file is locked, restart your system, and try to empty the trash again.

once the file has been deleted, try to stream a netflix movie again.

I recently had the "Plug-In Failure" on Netflix after I got a new 2014 15" Macbook Pro Retina.

My coworker found this fix. The current version of silverlight won't start if the machine is running with the discrete NVIDIA GPU. Some apps need it and using an external monitor will cause it to use the discrete. Turn off all your apps and unplug the external montitor. This should put you back in the integrated Intel GPU. Now try to start a Netflix video, once its running you should be able to plug your external monitor back in and start other apps.

You can also use this utility http://gfx.io to see which GPU is being used.
