can't open itunes in 32 bit mode after upgrade to 10.4

I just downloaded the latest version of itunes, 10.4, and when I try to open it, I get the message,

"Running itunes in 64 bit mode requires MAC OS X 10.7 or later. To run itunes in 32-bit mode, select the itunes application in the Finder, choose the "get info" command int he file menu, and check the "open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the itunes info window."

Well, I don't have that checkbox option. Help?

Likewise, my install of 10.4 via SWU was giving the same error. I also noted that Get Info was giving a last modified date that was two days prior to the creation date.

Anyway, as suggested, I re-downloaded the standalone installer and ran it and this fixed the problem, not by now providing the 32-bit mode checkbox though! Instead, it just ran in 32-bit mode automatically. Of course, the other question that this begs is, given that Snow Leopard (which I'm still running) is a 64-bit capable OS, why won't this v10.4 of iTunes run in 64-bit mode?

Also of interest are that:

- the re-installed iTunes STILL says the app is version 10.4 (not 10.4.1 or anything else different to indicate that it's bug-fixed), and

- the creation date is now "Monday, 13 July 2009 22:46" !!!!!!!

Begs the question, methinks, of what on earth Apple's developers are doing lately with their software configuration management. (And, while I'm at it, I will also mention that Disk Utility's "Repair Permissions" function has been producing some VERY strange errors for quite some time too. After these latest updates, I ran it again and it's now even reporting that some files should actually be directories - AND saying that it's "fixed' them successfully! It doesn't, of course...... :-P )

Sorry, Apple, to be somewhat critical here, but as one who's worked in IT and been responsible for configuration management on various projects, I know I'd have had my A*S kicked severely if I had let software out of the door with these sorts of errors, so I don't think I'm being unreasonable when I expect a company like Apple to do at least as good a job as I can!

So much for listening to iTunes at work. I wish there was a site to go to that warns not to upgrade until mass problems are fixed since so far this year the Final Cut's "upgrade" got rid of multicam (among many things) which is what I need to use, and iTunes upgrade made no "open in 32 bit" mode and this explanation from fraidoons

1) You have to remove itunes from application folder 2) When you install it gets stuck in register MODE; so you have to kill the install using "Activity Monitor"

Sorry but I don't know what that even means.

I don't use my iTunes often and when I tried to open it after a couple of months, nothing, not even a bounce in the dock. I tried all of the suggested fixes and nothing worked. I then logged on as a different user on the iMac and received the 64 bit mode message. Of course, no check box for 32 bit mode. I returned to my own user login to see if the Administrator had the 32 bit check box - no. But interestingly, when I tried to open iTunes again, the message started appearing on my user account, which it hadn't earlier. I then downloaded iTunes (again - after doing so a couple of weeks earlier) and this time it seems to be working again, with no error messages. Whether, like last time, I open it again in a week and it happens again we will see. Thanks to everyone who has tried to resolve this issue. Even though there is no 'quick fix' at least it gives us an idea of where to look when any future problems occur.....and I have no doubt they will! ;p

It is October 6 (the day after) and I just ran into this bug. It is still unfixed -- this is really unbelievable. I don't care if there's a workaround. Software Update is supposed to just work and it doesn't. If this is an effort to get everyone onto Lion, I would seriously think twice if it is going to hose my system (and why would I think it would not)?

More simple fix for this is to type the following into the terminal:

sudo touch /Applications/iTunes.app

then put in your password (assuming you are an adminstrator of the mac in question)

This will update the creation and modification date of the iTunes.app bundle (which is basically what you are doing when you are moving it to the desktop and back to the Applications folder).

cheers

If you're running Lion, good luck.

After messing around with it a bit, I figured why not just keep iTunes at a robust 64 bit and upgrade my video to MP4? I looked around my Applications Folder, dug up MPEG Streamclip and did just that. Now it's just like old times only better.

Any file format just about can be converted with freeware and probably with iDVD or something (haven't tested- I like succinct software).
