volume control icon disabled

My Volume control icon was disabled automatically and the sound on my machine got locked out. I cannot increase or decrease the volume on my computer. Does any one have the same issue?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

I had the same problem but here it was much simpler - in Preferences-Audio I had two entries, one for internal speakers and one for the hdmi screen's speakers. It was somehow modified to the screen's speakers, which, for some reason, are not controllable.

This "bug" or "working as designed" feature is still a reality 5 years after is was reported the first time.

I´m running Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.6) on my MBP and just followed the "workaround" by plugging in and out my headphone and everything is just working fine now!

this was helpful. i just turn off blue tooth then turn it back on and it worked.
