iMac 2011 - no wifi connection after sleep under Lion

since i am using osx lion, my iMac is disconnected from my wireless network after sleep. (27 inch mid 2011, i5 with 2tb and ssd) (it states, that none of my preferred connections are available). sometimes it is connected ... but internet just won`t work.

besides that wifi is working just perfectly ... no drops no instability!

i am using airport extreme with 5ghz n-network, router is about 10 meters away (full signal).

under snow leopard i didnt experience any problems ... but since lion (which i am using since GM release) its really annoying because after every sleep i need to deactivate wifi and reactivate to connect.

i tried smc and pram reset ... changed my 5ghz settings to channel 36, deleted all other networks, did a reinstall (fresh!!) ... nothing helped 😟

this is NOT an airport station issue ... my other macs and iPhone are connected just fine.

please, this is VERY annoying .... if you have any hints i would be very grateful!

with kind regards,

felix

I think I've found an easy workaround to "sometimes won't re-connect wifi after sleep".

I wake up by pressing the power button.

Previously I was waking up by hitting spacebar.

I have a 2010 iMac with the latest Lion and all updates. Don't use time-machine. Don't have wired connection. Do use a bluetooth mouse.

Apple, I hope you're listening, as this might be a clue. I also have a 2011 Air, which does not have this problem -unless I have bluetooth enabled.

the only real solution is to hard wire with an ethernet cable and turn wifi off. there is a devise called a powerline av and it costs approx 60 dollars and it sends the signal/data through your house wiring. you plug one end into your router and wall socket and the other into a socket at your computer and an ethernet cable from that one to your computer. works flawless. no security issues either. yes apple sold me a wifi computer but i get tired of their non fixes

I have had the same issue with my iMac. I have applied a solution and it has not disconnected from wifi now for 5 days, even though it will sleep, and wake no problem.

I did all the usual things: Put the wifi account firdt in the service order; ensure the network is "remembered"; restart the router; restart the iMac, over and over.

Then I was reading a report about a Windows 7 issue (I am mostly a windows user, the Appple is my wifes) and the issue was similar, though not exactly the same. The issue was that when waking from sleep, it would take the Windows PC maybe 20 seconds to connect to the Internet, both wired and wireless. Microsoft said it was a power management issue, and advised, until they had a fix, to go into power management, select the internet card, and click "stay on during sleep". Solved the issue.

So I approached the iMac the same way; tried to access the Airport card to see if I could do the same, - I couldnt (but am no Appple expert); then I opened system preferences, open power management, and leaving the monitor at the default settings, moved the turn computer off setting as far right as possible, without reaching always. Rebooted, - havent had an issue since.

Let me know if this works for anyone else. Remember the things I did first, - do them, then the power thing, then restart.

I have an iMac, purchased in Jan. 2012, latest Lion, updated patch, blah, blah blah, connected via wifi, same issue, slow to connect after wake up. I have literally read hundreds of posts, solutions, etc.

Go to system preferences, energy saver, set sleep to NEVER! display can go to sleep whenever you wish.

Problem over, just keep the thing awake forever!!!

No problems for over 5 days.

I am experiencing a similar problem with Lion 10.7.3 on a MacBookPro 13-inch Mid 2010:

With an active connection to a WPA2 Personal or Enterprise WIFI network, I put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid. When I later wake the computer by opening the lid, I am not automatically reconnected to the network (gray airport icon in the menu bar). This occurs for several of my preferred networks. I can reconnect manually by selecting the network from the airport menu.

The proposed solutions I've found on this thread either haven't worked, or are unacceptable workarounds for me.

This was giving me grief for about a week. in addition when i did get connected it was slow and at the end it would just kick me off randomly... I seem to have fixed it by doing the following:

1. I deleted all the duplicates of my airport password from key chain.

2. I also deleted any other saved connection hotspots from my network preferences (starbucks, etc.)

3. I repaired my disc permissions using disc utility.

4. (and I believe this was the silver bullet) I changed the channels on my airport.

- open airport utility.

- double click basestation

- click edt

- under wireless click wireless options

- both the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz were set to automatic but i re set them to other channels (6 , 149 - i just tried these and it worked but you may have to experiment)

anyway. no problems connecting after sleep since. Plus my connection is lightening fast again.

hope this helps some people. good luck.

Since upgrading to Lion (via App Store) I've also had the same issue on my iMac where wifi connection is always lost when come back from Sleep and have to reconnect - which didn't happen in previous OSX versions. Annoying but the fact the workaround was simple meant I never looked into getting a fix, until today...

My fix was pretty simple - worked for me, maybe won't work for everyones setup/situation:-

- System Prefs / Network / then Turn WiFi off

- Press Advanced button, it will probably show your usual WiFi network in Preferred Networks list

- Delete your usual WiFi network in this list (make sure you have your connection details/password first!!!)

- Press OK and will then need your System password to ok the change

After this, it then worked fine, auto-connecting after each Sleep.

So far tested with a short Sleep (2 mins) and a longer Sleep (about 30 mins)

Haven't yet tested with an 'overnight' sleep.

I understand this, but I want to clarify that after you deleted your wifi network, you re-installed it, correct?

Same name and password?

If this is what you did, I tried it many times with no success.

Again the only thing that has worked for me is setting the iMac to never sleep, let the display sleep whenever you want and it always is connected. Has worked since Mar. 21st with no issues.
