iMac 2011 - no wifi connection after sleep under Lion

since i am using osx lion, my iMac is disconnected from my wireless network after sleep. (27 inch mid 2011, i5 with 2tb and ssd) (it states, that none of my preferred connections are available). sometimes it is connected ... but internet just won`t work.

besides that wifi is working just perfectly ... no drops no instability!

i am using airport extreme with 5ghz n-network, router is about 10 meters away (full signal).

under snow leopard i didnt experience any problems ... but since lion (which i am using since GM release) its really annoying because after every sleep i need to deactivate wifi and reactivate to connect.

i tried smc and pram reset ... changed my 5ghz settings to channel 36, deleted all other networks, did a reinstall (fresh!!) ... nothing helped 😟

this is NOT an airport station issue ... my other macs and iPhone are connected just fine.

please, this is VERY annoying .... if you have any hints i would be very grateful!

with kind regards,

felix

I applied the Wi-Fi patch but it didn't solve mu issue. But interesting is the following - as I turned off the option System Preferences-> Bluetooth->Advanced-> Allow Bluetooth devices to wake up this computer the issue seems to not exist! I tried to put asleep and wake up again several time and all the time Wi-Fi works correctly.

The "bad" thing is I have to use the physical button on the back of iMac to wake it up.

Could you please check/confirm/decline/recreate what I have described?

P.S. I'm using the iMac 21" (purchased a few days ago) with Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. On my MacBook Pro 2011 everything work like a charm.

It may be a problem with the connection information stored in your network profile.

  1. Go to System Preferences > Network.
  2. Click the Wi-Fi connection.
  3. Click the Advanced... button on the bottom right.
  4. Click the Wi-Fi tab.
  5. Under Preferred Networks, select your wireless network.
  6. Click the - (delete) button.
  7. Turn off your Wi-Fi connection.
  8. Turn it back on.
  9. Select and login to your wireless network. This will re-save your connection under Preferred Networks.
  10. Close your laptop and reopen it to test whether it worked.

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my brand new 27inch apple imac running lion. I purchased my imac on Feb 9th 2012, and within a week, I realized that it was having issues staying connected to the internet. The imac would not connect to the internet when I would wake it up from sleep, and it would constantly drop wifi signal. I thought that maybe my router was the issue, but every other computer in my house, including a $250 netbook remained happily connected to the internet while the imac just sat there not loading my webpage. The airport symbol is 'on' but it appears that I'm not actually connected to the internet as pages do not load. I can 'fix' the problem by clicking the airport off, and then back on..and then I am able to reload/view the page. Some days, I get kicked off the internet every 10 minutes or so..VERY ANNOYING! I'm scared to make a purchase using the computer lest I get dropped in the middle of the transaction. I have tried EVERY fix that has been mentioned on just about every mac forum online...I have even done a reinstallation. It 'fixed' the problem for about a day, but then it began to drop the signal worse than before. Once I started to search online to see if there was a work around for my issue, I realised that lots of other people are having the same problem. However, when I called apple support, they told me that they hadn't heard of any wireless connectivity issues..but that they had a patch for the wireless issue/computer not connecting after sleep. After spending close to $2000 on a computer, I expect it to work. I'm really tired of checking every day to see if there is some kind of fix for this, but judging from the fact that many of these posts are almost a year old, and customer support is passing the buck on this one, I really think that we all need to band together and put some real pressure on apple to fix this issue. So we seem whiny when there are hungry people in the world and we are complaining about our expensive computers but I'm sick of this and I don't think we should have to beg apple to believe and acknowledge us. It's supposed to work. Period. Lets start writing tech writers and reviewers about this issue. It seems like they only respond to problems once the media gets ahold of the information and embarasses them. If you're listening apple, all I'm asking for is for my computer to work the way it is supposed to..and a little responsibility on your end - if there is a problem, it isn't going to kill you to admit that there is an issue and that you're engineers are working on it...

Sol:

If you used the note that I added to this list you may have found success.

I suggest that you try this. It works for me, but some folks choose not to do it.

Set screen saver to Never.

Set Sleep to NEVER.

Set screen to darken in about 10 minutes.

Set "Hard disks to sleep when possible.

Walk away. In an hour, move the mouse. It comes right up.

Leave it on. My iMac has been on for over 4 months. 24/7.

This may or may not work. There are lots of smart folks that have success. This works for me.

I've tried setting the computer to NEVER SLEEP but because it's having issues remaining connected to the wifi all the time(not just after sleep) I sometimes find it disconnected when I come over to use it even if I have not allowed it to go to sleep. Thanks for the response..I know you are trying to be helpful but Apple needs a real fix for this and to take customers seriously when we call to say that there is an issue. I was told by the customer support rep that they weren't aware of any issues..yet here we all are. Another fix was suggested on another apple forum: http://rys.pixeltards.com/2011/09/04/osx-lion-wifi.html I just tried it this morning, so I'll see how that works. So far I've had 40 minutes of uninterrupted wifi connection - Yes!!

Can you test another wifi in the area? If so, what happens?

If the wifi drops on multiple routers, I would return the iMac immediately to demand a replacement. People experiencing a no wifi reconnection after sleeping is one issue. Your issue could be an actual wifi hardware problem and it might not be fixable through an update. Test it first.

Putting my iMac never to sleep was not a solution for me in and of itself because that setting was always set to never since day one. My issue was having multiple wifi networks listed (one was from the Apple store), and "ask to join new networks" was checked. Deleted and unchecked. That solved the wifi sleep issue 95% of the time for me but I started to experience no wifi when turing my iMac on 10% of the time. Apple released an update which I downloaded. I then deleted my network name, turned wifi off, turned back on, and reconnected.

I haven't had any wifi issues from sleep since doing such. I have not tested it from the turn off mode yet because I found out it is best to manually put your Mac to sleep then to turn it on in the morning/afternoon and off at night daily as I have been doing (not for wifi reasons).

I hope everyone can find a fix because this is obviously a Lion problem as many who have upgraded now have no wifi after sleep issues where as with their prior OS they did not. But in your case, I would first test some routers to deal with your wifi dropping and go from there.
