Lion Upgrade: No audio via miniDisplayport to HDMI (iMac)

Using the mid 2011 iMac and a (Denon1912) A/V-Receiver. iMac connected via miniDisplayport-to-HDMI-adapter to the receiver.

With Snow Leopard it worked. Video and Audio were always detected by the receiver and sent to the monitors/speakers.

With Lion the video-output of the iMac only gets activated when i put the computer to sleep and wake it up. The audio-output via miniDisplayport/HDMI does not work. The audio-options do not list my receiver - only the internal speakers.

Cables are connected on startup, A/V-Receiver is turned on and set to the correct channels before booting the iMac.

How can I fix this? Downgrade and wait for bugfixes?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

If you left all the peripherals connected while performing the Lion upgrade that may have confused the SMC. Do a SMC reset (it may take 2-3 attempts) and see if that helps. Please follow the instructions carefully.

SMC RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  • Release the power button.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

I re-installed from scratch Lion on my 21" 2011 iMac and it had the same issue as before.

It's clear that there is an issue on some hardware as the brand new 13" MacBook Air works on same set-up pretty (HDMI instantly works and Audio shows up in Sound in System Preferences).

My new plan is to return the iMac to Apple as it clear this hardware build has a fault. Maybe they will own up to the bug / poor support of Lion for HDMI.

Regards,

Paul.

I'm in the boat as many other people, MBP 2011 (8,2), under Snow Leopard my Monoprice.com Mini Displayport to HDMI cable (yes, the ones that later got pulled, whatever) worked perfectly fine, outputting audio with no problem. Upgrade to Lion and it doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure others have had the same problem with other connection types (display port to hdmi adapter, then hdmi cable) so I don't think it would have anything to do with Apple "bricking" the old mini displayport to hdmi cables. I mean I used to work at an Apple Store and we used to sell a cable just like that, which later had to be pulled because they weren't licensed for the HDMI spec.

I'm just curious about those people who successfuly got it working after PRAM and SMC resets, yet others (like me) haven't. It's not all lost for me since I do have a connection for digital audio out to my receiver, but still, one more cable to have connected. =( Hope this (and plenty of other Lion problems) gets fixed soon.

I finally have my setup working. follow the steps in a previous Apple forum:

  • Use Audio Midi Setup to set audio to 8 channel, 24 bit
  • Click configure speakers option in Audio Midi Setup, and set to 5.1 audio

Then go to the Sound Pref. and choose the Receiver that should be listed

Then when in VLC (1.1.10) under the Audio tab Audio Device - chhose HDMI

Worked for me with no PRAM/SMC reset
