Lion Upgrade: No audio via miniDisplayport to HDMI (iMac)

Using the mid 2011 iMac and a (Denon1912) A/V-Receiver. iMac connected via miniDisplayport-to-HDMI-adapter to the receiver.

With Snow Leopard it worked. Video and Audio were always detected by the receiver and sent to the monitors/speakers.

With Lion the video-output of the iMac only gets activated when i put the computer to sleep and wake it up. The audio-output via miniDisplayport/HDMI does not work. The audio-options do not list my receiver - only the internal speakers.

Cables are connected on startup, A/V-Receiver is turned on and set to the correct channels before booting the iMac.

How can I fix this? Downgrade and wait for bugfixes?

Hey guys, so I ordered two cables from monoprice.com: one is a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter (much like the moshi one that apple sells), and the other was simply a thunderbolt extender. The thunderbolt extension cable connected to my old minidisplayport to hdmi (one cable, the ones that got pulled from the market), did not work at all, the computer and tv wouldn't recognize anything. I tried the old cable by itself and was still getting at least video (no audio like in Snow Leopard). Maybe it's a bad cable or who knows, maybe that just doesn't work, don't have any other displayport cables to try it with.

NOW, tried the thunderbolt to hdmi ADAPTER, hooked it up to my tv with an hdmi cable and guess what? AUDIO! Yes I had done the pram and the other resets before, so I can't say for sure if that helped or if it's just the cable. My hunch? I think they somehow tweaked something in the drivers to only allow a certain type of spec for displayport/thunderbolt and hdmi. Anyone who wants to order the monoprice adapter, go on their website, it's like $3 or so and it definitely works with Lion. I have a feeling that this issue won't be "fixed" since it might have been a conscious decision on their part to exclude certain specs of these cables.

I'm on my iPhone and I'm too lazy to go through the thread, but has anyone gotten a displayport/thunderbolt to hdmi cable (one cable, no adapter) to work with audio on Lion? If nobody has then I might be right, otherwise it's anybody's guess as to why certain cables work and others don't (when they all worked under snow leopard). Any thoughts?

I have a 2010 iMac 27 inch, which with SL 10.6.8 was working great with a Moshi MDP to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable to my Sharp 46 inch LCD TV. Audio and video came up immediately every time. With the Lion 10.7 upgrade, after the PRAM and SMC resets I could get video, but never audio. The HDMI connection does not show up in the audio output options. With the 10.7.1 patch I've now lost video too, despite repeated resets, reboots, and trying everything I've found online.

This is a problem across all of my Apple hardware. In addition to the iMac, I have a 2009 13" Macbook Pro, which performed identically to the iMac using the same connections. Audio/video works with SL, video only works with 10.7, nothing works with 10.7.1. With my 2008 15" MacBook Pro, using a DVI to HDMI cable, which will obviously never work with audio, I also lose the video signal with 10.7.1.

My solution for now is a downgrade back to my SL backup. This is really too bad, as I like a lot of the new features in Lion. I wish Apple hadn't screwed up the HDMI support so badly.

The answer to these problems cannot be to upgrade all cables and peripherals everytime Apple has and OS upgrade. I'm becoming more and more frustrated with how these bugs and Apple's answer to them parallels Microsoft's methods of doing business.

Looks like I will need to waste another day or two downgradeing to SL as well. Probably won't get my money back for the Lion upgrade either. Another issue I have as I had to pay for it even though it was supposed to be free since I bought a new generation MBP with SL.

I fixed this issue this weekeend by going into the MIDI sound settings. (had to search and still had trouble finding it) and then adjusted the frequency thing to a lower setting. That worked for me. I bought the new adapter and could see the TV in the output menu, so not sure if that helps anyone else or not, but I would def give it a try.

It can not be a problem with the cables or the hardware. Everything works fine when I boot from my Snow Leopard drive. So it must be a Lion problem. I thought Apple did QC testing before releases.

But appearantly they did not even test using Lion with a Wacom tablet. But that is another thread.

Also I can not get a setting in MIDI to correct the problem. Now I don't even know what the default settings were. Can anyone tell me how to get the MIDI settings back to default?

Alright,

I also couldnt believe a hardware/cable failure... but it is! I tried every good advice, but nothing was working. Then I checked Amazon feedback on adapters and finally there was someone talking about this problem and that his new adapter is working for him.

I ordered it, it came today and .... I have SOUND again!!

So, everyone waiting for a fix from apple... due to the fact that these adapters are no official apple products, I guess they are not going to work on it. Buy yourself a new adapter and enjoy Lion.

I am really happy after a long time with a headache.

Guys and girls, I was equally astouned, but indeed, I too tried everything software related and finally ordered the monoprice mdp-hdmi adapter and everything worked like a breeze. No settings, no SMC resets, no tinkering with virtual audio/midi devices, it actually plugged-and-played. It immediately recognizes both display and sound output, hot plugged or not, screen resolution and all settings are completely automatically set right.

Still somewhat disappointed in Apple and curious to see if they will finally produce any sort of explanation, let alone a fix. But meanwhile, I'm sunk back in the couch watching all my hd content with full surround audio... Cost me about 10$, totally worth it.

All,

I can confirm that if you get a miniDisplayPort to HDMI Female socket cable it will work. Video and Audio.

I had a different cable with a male HDMI connector and this would only work intermittantly and there was no sound.

Once I chnage the cable I was back to the same set-up as I had under Snow leopard.

I have read that Apple changed software in Lion to meet the HDMI specific / rules. Apparently male connectors are not allowed!

Paul.

Hi, don´t wish to burst anybody´s bubble but I bought the adapter from Amazon a good few months ago and like you say, it worked perfectly... plugged it in straight away attached to the HDMI cable and had Audio and it was perfect... for a few months.

One day, it stopped working and I have no idea why. I still get the display on the tele but there is no HDMI Sound Output so now I have to use the sound from the mbp only. I´ve tried everything I have gleened from all these forums and nothing works, not even the PRAM reset.

Giving up now... feel like I have to buy another adapter from Amazon but yeah, it might only last 2 months again... we´ll see.

Losing hope........

To anyone still having this problem (Monoprice minidisplay port to HDMI but no sound)... I was able to fix this by adjusting the MIDI settings.

Goto Applications>Utilities>AudioMIDISetup

While plugged into your TV via HDMI you should see your TV as the source. (If not goto System pref's>Audio and chage the output source)

The defualt is 980000Hz... change it 48000 or lower. Boom. It works
