Canon Camcorder no longer recognised after update to Lion

My Canon Vixa HF20 is no longer recognised after I upgraded to Lion. When I plug in the USB cable and try to connect a pop window says "no camera found". I tried reinstalling the Camcorder software but this has not helped. Don't know what to do next...

Finally heard back from panasonic and they are basically saying they are not to blame :

PANASONIC EMAIL:

I am sorry to learn of the issues you are having with your Panasonic camcorder.

In response to your email I have checked with our software support team in regards to the problem you are having with OSX Lion.

They unfortunately do not have a solution for this problem & have recommended that you contact Apples support team for assistance.

They have also stated that our camcorders do work fine with OSX Leopard so the issue will be with the operating system & not the camcorder.

I am sorry that I could not have been of more help to you in this matter. If you should have any further questions or concerns please do contact our software support team on 0844 844 3869

Kind regards,

So unfortunatly I think we are going to be sitting with this problem a lot longer than I had originally thought.

Ok, so they have addressed the issue regarding the mechanical integrity of the camcorder but not the driver/software that helps it communicate with the OS.

You know it works fine under Leopard right? And yes they state correctley it must be the OS.

What they do not want to admit is that they are not up to date in supplying up to date software/drivers like the majority of manufacturers who were warned/prepared for the update of the OS!

Blame everyone else policy as usual.

It's just plain SAD!!!

I'm sorry that you are in this position, hopefully some savvy 3rd party software company will beat them to the punch with a driver/workaround and you can get going again.

Good Luck 🙂

I wouldn't mind switching if I knew that I wouldn't have this many problems... and you are right everyone is just passing on the buck....

I phoned apple support a while ago and they were helpful more so than before and have acknowledged that there is a problem and are raising the problem further.... Im not sure if they are going to contact panasonic and raise the issue with their engineers as apple where saying they dont specifically develop drivers for 3rd parties but I think they are going to ask their own engineers to have a look at the situation and see what they can do.

guess it has just turned into a waiting game now 😐

I may have fixed it! After OS lion install my Canon camcorder was not available on firewire 400 on (an old) late 2006 Intel imac. I played around with the settings in 'system preferences' - 'network' . There you see the wifi, bluetouth, firewire connections etc. I selected the firewire and changed the 'configure' settings. It was set on - 'Using DHCP with manual address'. I changed that & pressed apply. Then went back and used the same as it started with and pressed apply again. It seemed to need reminding to wake up! Now I have my firewire port back in operation. AND IMovie has just loaded up from the camcorder. I looked at Canons site for drivers, as I thought it may be a driver problem at first, not a lot happening there for older cameras either, new ones may be ok, but all seems to be operational now, so maybe Apple is not so bad after all. Yea I tried pushing the cable in harder too, don't we all, pity it wasn't that simple.

yeah same here dude mine uses USB cable not firewire.... would it work if i bought a Mini USB to Firewire 800 cable ? because if its a connectvity issue with the usb it might be able to be detcted through firewire 800 or something ? ive got a funny feeling that it wont be as simple as that though.... anyone that could confirm ?

Ok, but the logic is that it is the ports on the computer are the fault. There is another thread going < usb not working after lion upgrade > there doesn't seem to be a definite fix there yet either, but someone may come up with it. I went to my onboard computer 'help', it brought up -"check your devices USB connection", of course since lion all I get is,- content not available. The answer to that one must be around somewhere, but I can't find it at mo. The thought strikes me that if your keyboard is working from usb, then that port is ok, try swapping the ports, put the camera into the keyboard port and keyboard into another, maybe a restart as well. good luck, keep looking. Meanwhile I'm off to try to find the fix for some of the other Lion annoyances!

Ha! SUCCESS!

Following my post just above, I experimented with the Camcorder under Windows. What happened there gave me a hint that the device looks different to the OS depending on the mode set.

Back onto OS-X I first of all made sure that the Camcorder was in Movie mode (default was Photo). And, hey, it works. iMove sees it and can work with it.

So maybe that can help you as well? I hope so.
