OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I'm also having this problem on my iMac (mid 2011 base spec 2.5ghz i5 with upgraded 12gb ram). I've only noticed this whilst watching youtube videos using chrome - it doesn't happen all the time, but I've had to hard reboot twice today (as with others - mouse works, nothing else) 😠

At first I thought it might have been due to bad ram or something, but then I stumbled across this thread.

Really frustrated as I've only just switched to using mac - not a great start!

Hope Apple are working on a fix asap!!

Back to using windows for videos until they sort this out..😟

Like I said prior in this thread...

this has helped me quite a lot. I was having the same exact issues until I updated Java.

Have any of you done that? I've put the computer to sleep, then jumped into Youtube and all is well.

Baseline iMac, bought 3 weeks ago.

Try that... and see what happens.

Again, don't shoot me... newbie here just throwing out suggestions. 😊

I have FIREFOX 6 and it works like a Champ.

Been slugging it out with Safari though hoping to send sme reports in to help everyone out.

If you go to Safari EDIT in the top menu bar go down to SPELLING & Grammer, and there's several setting you can check or uncheck --- YOU CAN DO LIKE I DID or you can just do the opposite.

I used another user account and started playing with the spell and grammer boxes... unchecking them does have an effect on the responsiveness to the browser.

Secondly, you might go to the preferences in Safari and go to Extensions and disable or just set the tab to OFF and see if that helps.

Thirdly, go to advanced in the preferences and bump it up to 10 instead of 5MB.

Also, if you have previously installed APPLEJACK, try uninstalling it, as that made a tremendous difference for me.

@kelliefrombeaverton, Thanks!

I got the same problem with my 2-week-old 21.5'' iMac. The machine freezes except the mouse cursor when playing youtube videos on Safari. It happened randomly but it always freezes right after resuming from sleep.

I tried installing java like kelliefrombeaverton suggested and now my iMac is not freezing up playing youtube videos. I have tried playing youtube videos right after sleep three times and it works really well. Still not sure if it won't happen randomly though.

Here's everything I did:

- Have Flash version 10.3.181.34 installed

- Install Java Runtime http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90908.html

- Install Java for Lion from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421

- Reset Safari

Everything is working well for now. Maybe you guys can give it a shot.

Just wanted to add that I'm having the EXACT same issue too. I have a new 2011 iMac 27, with Radeon 6970. After computer wakes from sleep if I play a YouTube video in Safari, the machine freezes. I can move the mouse, but that's it. This has happened 3 times so-far since I upgraded to Lion. I think it also happened once without playing a YouTube video, but it too was shortly after waking the computer from sleep. I also still have issues with the bluetooth magic mouse losing it's connection once or twice a day.... annoying.

Same problem here. I have mid 2011 base Imac 21.5". I called tech support yesterday and they had me unplug the unit then held down a series of keys while turning on the computer. Still didn't work. I updated my Java and checked the box. We'll see what happens. Meanwhile APPLE, get going on the fix. Also itunes and the mail program open when starting up. Why do I have to check a box everytime ? They're not in my start up folder.
