OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I'm afriad to say I'm having the exact same issue since upgrading to Lion. I'm on a base 2011 21" iMac. The freeze occurs randomly when attempting to play Quicktime or Flash videos (youtube, etc.) online. It is completely random, and the computer will freeze entirely, except for the mouse cursor. But I cannot click on anything, nor force quit. Only solution seems to be a hard reset with the power button.

Ran hardware dianostics and found no problems wiht hard drive or RAM. Hope fix is coming soon...

Simple question:

Did you do an update or a clean install?

If it's an update look at the logs (via Console.app) at about the times when you got these freeezes and try to find a culprit. Try updating Flash (try the beta 64bits version 11 for example), and try to remove all third party codecs for Quicktime (remove everything that is inside /Library/Quicktime (don't forget to backup them before doing so).

If you don't achieve to find one, try a clean install: boot on the new recovery partition and format your system partition using disk utility provided int his mode, then install Lion.

Of course, don't forget to do a backup before trying the clean install!

I encountered exactely the thame issue on my brand new i7 3,4GHz iMac 27" w/ 256Go SSD 4Go DRAM : all apps/finder freezed, only a useless moving mouse pointer. I still could remotely log on the iMac using ssh, but I couldn't avoid to do a hard reset (power off) to get rid of the freeze. The problem does not systematically occurs but happened to me while visiting websites integrating videos (flash, not sure).

when looking at the console, many debug info messages can be seen :

23/07/11 12:47:50,000 kernel: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **

23/07/11 12:47:50,000 kernel: ** GPU Debug Info Start **

....

I guess we only have to wait for Apple techs to polish the new Lion 😉
