OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

same symptoms, install osX lion, and since then, twice now my computer locks up when wtaching youtube - all but mouse mouvements - only way out is press power button 😟 of course the "restart if my computer freeze" doesn't work since the mouse is still moving it probably think it's not frozen...

Hey all,

Having the exact same symptoms. Youtube video starts loading but before the first frame is shown a total freeze of the computer. Only the mouse pointer can move, rest of the system is unresponsive.

A brand new iMac 27", i7 3,4 Ghz 8 gig, Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB, 250G SSD. The computer was delivered last friday and I updated it to Lion.

Hey all,

Having same symptoms and it is quite annoying to be honest. Here's the where it gets strange YouTube video isn't playing system still freezes, also mouse still moves iTunes still plays music but after about a minute or two I get the spinning beah ball. This has happen randomly. It also happen when my son was playing 1000 games thru Firefox.

New iMac 27", i7 3.4Ghz 16GB ram, 6970m 2gig version, 1TB HD.

I can report that I got a call back from an Apple technician today asking for more info about the problem on my iMac. I called AppleCare on Saturday to let them know about it, and I've provided a fair amount of info so far to the technician who's following up on this.

Ok people... I was on the phone with Apple for about an hour this morning. I was able to get some help with the issue. Because I was unable to recreate the issue after we restarted, she wasn't able to escalate the issue to the engineers. However, if what I post at the bottom doesn't work, please call Apple. They have to have so many calls before they can escalate. Also, I showed her the this thread. She was reading it as we were talking. So they are aware.

What we did to correct the issue for me, for now, was shut down the iMac. During start up, before the startup sound, (DIIIIING... lol) Hold down the Option + Command + R + P keys until you get another start up sound. Before the apple appears, hold down the shift key until you get to the next next screen. This was explained to me as a reset for software. You can reference this by looking up Article HT1379 on apple support forum.

So far, this has worked... I opened three separate windows all watching different films from three different sites simultaniously, after sleep mode, and couldn't recreate the issue.

Hope this helps and please CALL SUPPORT if it doesn't.

That resets the PRAM, in another post on this forum it was confirmed to not work.

It's worked...so far...on my late 2009 21.5" iMac. No movie freezes and iPhoto 8.1.2 opens instantly without

two minutes of spinning ball which had become the norm since Lion.

Well at least it is temperary and fixes other issues for people... lmao... Really hope this issue gets resolved. Still encouraging people to call on this issue.

So PRAM reset (HT1379) and booting once in Safe mode (HT1564) would do the trick?

I don't have the issue, but I don't have the same GPU in my system Mid 2011 iMac...

Same problem here, with iMac 2011 21,5", when i load a video : vimeo / youtube, its freeze then i have to shutdown manually my mac. only pointer is working properly.
