WebKit2WebProcess.exe

I just installed the latest update to safari. Now it crashes almost right away.. I have it set up to open in top sites. I click on any page it goes grey to bring the page forward, then crashes. When I end program, I notice I have in my windows task manager under processes webkit2webprocess.exe. I've tried to open safari a couple times, only to have it crash every time. After trying three times, I have ended safari program, only to have three of these webkit2webprocess files still showing up on my task manager processes. What's going on?!

I'm new to Apple support, so if anyone can tell me how to find responses from Apple in this forum, I'd appreciate it.

I have just rebuilt my Intel Laptop with the Windows XP SP3 and all the latest updates. Very clean machine. I'm installing the Apple stuff now. I started with Airport Utility and then Safari. iTunes is next. But, I started up Safari, which has a nice interface so I'll use it, but there is this nasty WebKit2WebProcess.exe process that was using 90% of CPU for a little while. I'm not so worried about getting rid of it.

I'd like to know what it is exactly? What does it do? If it is some sort of way to pool network resources or something, sounds like a good idea.

Three QUESTIONS

  1. WHAT IS WebKit2WebProcess.exe?
  2. How can one find Apple answers in this forum?
  3. Is there a place on the Apple website that addresses these sorts of technical questions?

I'm not ****-bent on getting rid of it, just looking for information.

I didn't read all 7 pages of posts here, but after installing Safari 5.1.7 (latest) to my Windows (XP) Core 2 Duo, I not only got a security certificate error for a website I'm working on that's just fine in every other browser, but my mouse started lagging and my hard drive was constantly running... when I checked Task Manager it said WebKit2WebProcess.exe was between 1% and 50% randomly. This was actually worse than when Microsoft Security Essentials is scanning, which is only sometimes noticeably bad, but so far this is unacceptable and I had to close Safari to get my computer to run properly. The website didn't give the security error on anyone else's Safari on their Macs, or on my iPad.

I don't understand why this process needs to constantly grind my hard drive. What is it searching for? Is it collecting and sending information on my hard drive to Apple? Are they sending it to the NSA? I mean, what's going on here?

I had the same problem win 7 (64bit) safari 5.17 , when entering the preferences tab this error appears. Searching for xpcom.dll was found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox. Adding this path to my system PATH environment fixed the problem. Windows + pause > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables > System variable > Path > edit add ; C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox to the end of variable value. A better way is at this link ; http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ee872121(v=vs.85).aspx#a ppPaths under App Paths.
