How to show dock in full screen mode

Hello,

I'm wondering how to get the dock to show up temporarily in full screen mode. When I place my cursor near the bottom of the screen in a full screen app, the dock doesn't pop up. Is this normal and if so, how do I switch between full screen apps without using gestures on the mouse? I'm really hoping that this is a bug.

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7), 4 GB RAM

Move your cursor to the bottom edge of the screen. Once the cursor is at the very bottom, stop, then move the cursor in a downward motion again, the dock will then pop up.

Maybe this is a bug, maybe not.

I think it is the best new GUI interface trick that I have seen in a long time.

I think this dock behaviour in full screen is just about perfect. All popups should now be done this way.

It is so easy to get to the dock when you want it and it never annoyingly pops up when you are doing something else, which with the old way of just popping up as soon as the cursor is at the screen edge is far too annoyingly often.

I wish Apple would extend this behaviour to the menu bar on full screen apps as this still pops up when unwanted. Especially irritating and disorientating in full screen Safari.

Actually I believe they should extend this behaviour to the Dock in the standard (non fullscreen) desktop too. It is just a far superior way of showing the dock.

If Apple do not do this I would be happy to pay a third party Dev for software which would enable this behavior.

Some of the answers say "bring the cursor down the screen and stop and again go down". For some reason it wa not too clear for me and was causing inconsistent behavior for me.... until I realized the best way to make the dock appear!

1. Scroll to the edge of the screen on the side that you have configured for the dock. Lift your finger off the touchpad. Scroll in the same direction again.

2. Another thing that works is just to keep scrolling towards the edge (where your dock is configured). Dont stop when you reach the edge, but keep going for an extra 1 second. No need to stop or lift your finger off the touchpad.

Agreed, a frustrating situation. You can use Mission Control to switch between apps easily enough, but this requires a trackpad gesture (not such a bad thing.) Also the "Heads Up" screen (command-tab) will show all running apps- full screen or otherwise.

re: Dock

I found that setting the default delay to zero, has the side benefit of opening Dock while in full screen mode.

In Terminal, copy and paste the following line and hit return:

defaults write com.apple.Dock autohide-delay -float 0 && killall Dock

To restore the default behavior, enter:

defaults delete com.apple.Dock autohide-delay && killall Dock

If you have a Magic mouse, you can double tap with 2 fingers to bring up Mission Control which will have the Dock in it. This keeps you from having to go all the way to the bottom of the screen.

like melfromaycliffe says, this should be extended ot the menu bar as well for full screen. Too often that bar has come out on me, when I didn't want it to.

This frustrated me to no end.

I finally figured out an easier way to get the dock to appear in Full Screen mode.

Drag your finger to the edge where the dock should be and then hold your finger there, and the dock magically appears with very little delay and appears consistently more than if you lift your finger and drag again.
