Unable to search network drives with Lion...

Your right they have introduced something into 10.7.3, I actually get some results now, however the results are not complete or consistant. Searching for a keyword will for example show me only a subset of files with that keyword in there name, despite the fact they all actually in the same folder. Which is very strange.

Still not able to search an AFP volume reliable or conistantly. So no joy. While I disagree with other posts on here about apple not being better than windows, on this particular issue I have to agree. And still no response from apple it seems.

our IT/BT department finally put the z extreme update in place....and swtiched me back from SMB to AFP and I can searcha nd do everything I used to

I still dont like spotlight layout and functionality. It seems to start with the Z's and go to A'son the bottom and it wont switch when I click the word "name"...but I can search for the first time in 4 months

I share this problem with everyone here and I 've spent the last four hours trying to find a succesful way to deal with it to no avail. I am accesing the network drive via smb.

I find apple's neglect for this simply appaling. But hey with mountain lion we shall have a reminders app....😠

I am leaving feedback to them and I suggest others do it to.

And I will not be waiting for mountain lion for them to fix this issue. If by 10.7.4 or at the latest at 10.7.5 they haven't I am selling half of my macs and installing competing os's on the rest of them. I 've just about had it with their pandering to the ios phone crowd and neglecting core os functionality. If they won't listen to feedback they 'll listen to my money going to other pockets...

I find the threats about migrating to other OSes quite amusing. Obviously, a lot of people complaining here have spent too much time in their walled garden...I'm working with Windows, Linux and OS X, and the latter by far is the least troublesome. I hope that all the people leaving in anger will keep us updated on their experiences with those 'competing' operating systems. I could write a book about what isn't working in both Windows and Linux.

I was going to say the same thing about the threat. I was going to say "let me know how that works out for you..you'll be back".

Why can't people just switch to APF? I don't know much about it but with the zextreme or whatever it's called, it works fine. In my company, we did what apple wanted and patched our server to solve the problem, not edit the OS.

Why people cannot switch to AFP? Well, try to imagine that you work in an organization that has couple of thousands employees and the company network is build on Windows. Then there is a bunch of guys who are using Mac. Who do you think is forced to adapt? What do you think the IT department tells you if you ask them to setup AFP for you on the servers? :-D

I was under the impression we had a windows server with z-extreme on it do the macs could access it. I am sure we have a windows server because we were told our file naming cannot contain spaces or periods, like it could before we moved and were on a Mac server.

Sorry I do not know much aboiut the different protocols, just that it works with lion now after a patch and switching back to AFP, which didn't work before.

Mojo66...could you give some details on what would be in this "book" about things that don't work in Windows? I laugh at Mac fanboys that act like their favorite OS's crap doesn't stink. My main home desktop is a Windows 7 machine and it's extremely reliable and I can't think of a single thing that doesn't work.

could people please stop posting in this thread SO SUPRIRSED by this issue like its new information & please stop the ******* contests between operating systems. Good grief, every system has its flaws. Everyone is gonna like what THEY like & putting your opinion out there isn't gonna change someone elses.

And for what its worth, apple claims to only have ONE reported case of this (two if they count mine) they were of NO HELP whatsoever & could do nothing to make it work - this was after very long & multiple phone calls with their "enterprise level" support - both parties are at "fault" windows & mac. It'll be ok, we'll survive. i promise.

side note: our company bought into JointVenture in hopes of getting some REAL support on these types of issues. We were connected with a "genius" who had not a clue in the world. i dont even know if was aware that he worked for apple. THEN we were sent to "enterprise level" support - they KNEW they worked there, they just had never heard of such (besides the one other reported case) - later they said we should have been charged $695 for the enterprise call - to which i said, um, why? we already paid $500 for support that was subpar & now you want nearly $700 for still no solution??? i must be missing something, seems like you shouldn't pay for a service that deosnt SERVE YOU IN ANY WAY. THen a local rep from our apple store got involved & reutnred our JointVenture $500. still using the EasyFind squirell app - it does the job - albeit slower than what i'd prefer but in the meantime IT'LL BE OK.

Sure. Recently I switched from a german to a US keyboard layout. On OS X everything went smoothly. Then I booted into my Windows 7 Bootcamp partition, added the new layout and removed the old one. So far everything went fine. But I must have done something wrong because the next time I booted into Windows, I couldn't enter my password anymore. The cursor keys and the Return would still work, but no other keys were accepted. The mouse was also working. So I thought well use that fancy new on-screen keyboard. But when I tried to do so, Windows did some work for 5 minutes, displayed some fancy progress bar, but ended up with another "Unspecified error" and no restore. It doesn't make sense to offer features that don't work, right?

Linux isn't any better. Recently I tried to burn a 4 Gig file on a DVD. But it wouldn't work. I tried half a dozen different programs, but they either crashed or produced coasters. Until I found out what the problem was. Although there a numerous programs out there, all of them expect to write an intermediate image into /tmp. Problem was: I didn't have 4 Gigs of free space on /tmp. I had 500 Gigs free on my user directory but while all of those brilliant programmers out there had their focus on creating the 27th incarnation of a DVD burning program on Linux, they were all basically just creating new fancy frontends to the same command-line program. Amongst the dozens of DVD burning software, there was not one that was able to burn data on the fly. All programs were creating an intermediate image file in /tmp. If that failed, they either crashed or burned as much as they could, producing a coaster.

I don't need the coice between 20 different programs to do a given task. I just need one good one that works. And most often, that happens on OS X.

All the problems you described can easily be fixed with some research.

This "search" problem (a search function is an ESSENTIAL part of any OS it's unbelievable that such an important function isn't working) can't be fixed by a normal user.

I'm forced to abandon Lion because of this.

Mojo66 - You describe your Windows 7 install is "vanilla" with "no fancy drivers or tweaks" and "just an out-of-the box" install when in actuality, your install is anything but that. You're running Windows with BOOTCAMP on a Mac. You're going to run into minor problems like that. Every driver you're using is most likely developed by Apple to work on their hardware. Just for fun I changed my keyboard layout to German and back to US on a true Windows machine and it worked without a hitch. This one problem you're having on a BOOTCAMP environment is hardly a "book of problems".

As for Linux, I couldn't care less about that. LOL

They are inexcusable for this issue. They are the largest tech company in the world and the "world's most advanced os" cannot support searching on a networked drive? This is something that we would allow for from apple circa 2003 not circa 2012.

And they are mocking us with a new os that has a notepad and reminders app? What are we? 13 year olds (no offence to 13 year olds btw) who just got our first ipod?

They have money in the bank enough to buy a few countries in the world and we can't get to search on a local network? (forget natively supporting ntfs usb drives, or at least bothering not to break compatibility with add ons that support this with lion...)

Had Jobs been well in the last two years of his life he'd have fired half of the os x team, and it would serve them right.

My ultimatum is 10.7.5. I am not going to be playing around after this, I 'll keep a couple of macs for sentimental reasons, and every new mac is getting a competing os to overwrite os x. I am also going to speak the worst about apple to anyone who's willing to hear, much as I spoke the best about them all this time.

No they just want you to use an APPLE server.

It just like a company that makes a razor. They are going to make it hard to use any other brand of razor blades in that razor besides theirs.

Seriously I know it's a pain but there are work arounds. I wish all the apple users who are whining WOULD just leave. Inexcusable this...they won't fix it I am doing that ....
