Anyway to revert Safari 5.1 to a proper downloads folder?

Personally HATE, loathe is almost too strong a word but comes close, the new little icon instead of a proper downloads window.

I typically keep my downloads window open to see what the progress is and which files have finished downloading and which I am still waiting for.

I cannot see ANYWAY to do this in 5.1, it is annoying me so much I may switch to Firefox......

Anyone know how to 'fix' this issue?

Hi

Well there definitely is a bug in 5.1 with PDF's even for people who are NOT using Adobe Acrobat. If the page is a frameset consisting of (say) two frames A and B, a link in frame A that is to a PDF that should open in Frame B using the target=B syntax in the link, the PDF will NOT open in frame B, but be downloaded. This is a bug that has been introduced in 5.1, and is not present in 5.05.

This bug is not associated with Adobe's Acrobat Reader; it happens when the internal Safari PDF browser is used and Acrobat Reader is not installed.

Cheers

I just discovered--while downloading the huge XCode 4 file from the App Store and having no idea how far along that download was--that download progress looks as if it appears in the new Launchpad application in the Dock. Clicking on that application brings up iPad- or iPhone-like "pages"; the last page, seemingly the one that opens when Launchpad is invoked, apparently shows any software being download. I see the canonical hammer icon for XCode/Developer Tools with a progress bar underneath.

If this information already has been discussed here, please pardon me; I just joined this discussion.

I'm using the version of Safari (5.1) that was automatically downloaded when I installed Lion (OS X 10.7), and I agree with all the comments here about a more visible download progress bar being needed in the newest version of the OS.

i am also really upset at apple for removing the downloads window. it was great to be able to drag any link into the window and it would just download it.

another of the many "workarounds" that i have to figure out to get my machine to work like it used to . i bought a new machine so i am forced to use this and starting to really hate it.

noone has figured out a way to get the downloads window back yet huh?

Running the exact same build of Safari 5.1 under OS X 10.6 and 10.7 illustrates the issue. The downloads window is available running under 10.6 but not under 10.7. Either code is there, and it's just disabled, or it's part of the system (or webkit) code and not the Safari application proper.

I wish wj. One of the many dumb changes in lion, forcing "inovation" at you without opt out. This alone practically ruins safari for me. I live in a rural area, and we only have 1.2M dsl service here. Needless to say when i download something like a mac os combo update, i'ts a 2 hour download sometimes. I tend to hit download then close my browser window and hit up ichat or something to patiently wait it out. But now i gotta keep a stupid blank safari window open to watch my download for completion. This is just one of many enfuriating changes in lion. But none the less you're stuck cause when a new OS version is out, the last one is immediately end of life. It's not like windows where my games will continue to get graphis driver updates/fixes etc. With 10.7 10.6 is done with exception to maybe security updates and what not. So as an avid gamer like myself,i have to move with progress even if i despite nearly the entire OS. 😟
