How to add missing apps to Launchpad? Most of the apps in my Finder do not appear in Launchpad.

I've loaded Lion onto two computers: an iMac and a Mac Powerbook. On the iMac, all the apps in the Finder folder appeard in Launchpad, but on the Powerbook, two-thirds of the apps in Finder do not appear in Launchpad. Why? And how do I get them into Launchpad?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.2), imac 20"

I followed these steps in order to reset the launchpad. Is this correct?

  1. cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock
  2. rm *.db
  3. killall Dock

Moreover I realised that the apps listed on the second screen are the ones not belonging to apple (Xlite, VLC, ecc...). The problem is that there are at lest other 5-6 non apple apps that are not listed at all in the launchpad (e.g cyberduck, chicken of the vnc, dropbox, doubletwist, ...) 😟

I don't know why, but Apple has been keeping us supplied with QuickTime 7 for several years now. For one thing, it dies so much more. Maybe because I paid the reg fee years ago for "Pro" ... but open it and see what you've got. Mine can do Save As and record and edit and all sorts of other things.

And it does intall in Utilities. Same as Snow Leopard.

I see that any non-Apple application you install in Utilities is never scanned. Even dragging it onto the Launchpad icon in the Dock won't make it create an icon. I like to put utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner there (they are utilities, after all!) and they never show up. Also, XQuartz flat out installs itself into Utilities (since it is an X11 replacement and that is where the original X11 application goes). XQuartz never shows up in Launchpad, either.

Any application dragged to the icon will go onto launchpad. If it comes from the Utilities folder it will be placed in a box called Utilities automagically. That's what it does on all the machines here. If not working on yours, I recommend following the procedure documented here and elsewhere to flush the launchpad DB and start over. Good luck.
