I want Front Row Back

I'm sure I'm like a lot of other people here. I want my Front Row back.....

I listen to a lot of Podcasts, watch movies from an SMB share, look at my photos, oh and listen to music. Front Row has done this for year after year, and last night, once I found it was gone, I wanted to go back to SL. How can Apple think they'll ship the new OS without the media center (Front Row) which has been around since what? 2005-8?

Honestly, if this is some sort of push (on their part) to their iCloud crap, they are in for a rude awakening.

Apple should stop taking away our functionality. This one step forward and two steps back is getting really lame.

Plus, there also seem's to be a lot of bugs. new one for me is then I have my two 24" displays connected (3 screens total). Once I plug my iPXXXXX in both 24" displays go back!!! OMG The insanity!!!

Also, what about people who only have a 27 inch iMac as their display for watching movies and such (after all, these new 16:9 aspect ratio displays Apple is making made for that in mind). Can those people use AppleTV? But more importantly, what's the point of using AppleTV just to watch movies on the same computer it streams data off? It's like buying a truck to move your car around, instead of just driving the car itself.

I cannot agree more with all of You....IT IS SIMPLY A HUGE SETBACK on the Apple platform....

I also believe that most people who are using MacMini and FrontRow like many of us do....does not mind also buying an AppleTV2... Which has a cool interface - especially when renting TV shows/Movies.

But before I could use FrontRow on my MacMini to watch most of my stuff ... including live TV through Elgato's EyeTV integrated into FrontRow.

I would normally rent all my stuff in iTunes, and then in the evening when I felt like just browsing all my digital content. I could switch to AppleTV (another remote for the TV - to switch HDMI source) and then browse my computer stuff - including movies/TV shows.

But for normal use.... I would anyday choose FrontRow....since here I also have everything. And all of us neards who can really utilize all of this...do not mind to pay $99 for an extra AppleTV for the extra features. So this does not result in extra sales of AppleTV.... mostly less sales of TV shows/Movies.

I have now rented/Bought much less since the change....since I was always on my macmini in the livingroom...either watvhing TV or doing computer stuff.

Now I have to switch to AppleTV.... to only watch.... not doo all the other stuff - result ....I dont do it so much anymore....

:-(

but i usually swith HDMI source (Another remote contro) on my TV, to my AppleTV when renting TV shows/movies etc.

But now.... we only have AppleTV... Hmmm... I already have it...but really

Many posters to this and other forums have suggested that the only reason Apple has discontinued Front Row in OS X Lion is to sell more Apple TVs.

It's beginning to look like that is true.

Other "on-the-couch" media management systems (Plex, XBMC, Media Central etc) exist. But they all, as far as I know, are prevented from playing iTunes Store DRMd videos, they also don't play podcasts, iTunesU etc.

And, unless I am mistaken (and I could be, I am certainly no expert) an Apple TV 2 can't output to the likes of an iMac as the computer doesn't have an HDMI-in port.

So, if I am correct, if someone buys a new 27in iMac and is foolish enough to buy some ITunes store movies he or she will have no way of navigating their iTunes-bought content by remote control. And the only way to be able to watch iTunes Store-bought movies under remote control for someone using Lion is to have both an Apple TV and a television or display with an HDMI port.

I'm still astonished that Apple has done this. A previous contributor said he's now likely to buy less from the Apple Store. That must surely be the case for many, many people. Some other posters have commented on how much their friends admired Front Row. It has certainly been a killer app for many non-Apple-aware people who have visited my home. They have been amazed at how elegantly the mac mini can present and navigate movies, home-movies, slideshows, and podcasts through Front Row. It would have been great if, instead of having been dumped, it had simply been tweaked to run iTunesU items in the same way, as is possible on the AppleTV 2.

Anyway I am sure I am missing out on many under-the-hood improvements in Lion but I have now "upgraded" back to Snow Leopard and I am already glad I did.

Plex comes bundled with iTunes plugin that plays podcasts. But it hasn't been updated for a long time and has some serious bugs (on top of the bugs that Plex itself has).

Well, you can use an MDP-to-HDMI adaptor, but the bigger question is: can iMac recieve a signal and project it on its own display that way. Not sure it can.

Thanks

I hadn't tried it but the iMac tech specs in the Apple Store describe it as "Mini DisplayPort output".

However, after Googling around it seems the iMac can be put into target screen mode to act as display for another computer – using quite specific cables. But I can't find out whether or not it can be used as a display with either generation of Apple TV. Not surprisingly pre-Lion forum answers to questions about using it with an Apple TV usually just say "why don't you simply use Front Row?". All of which highlights just what Apple has deliberately taken away from its community of users.

I wanted to update my Mac Mini to Lion, but like I said before, I use very much Front Row, and buying an Apple TV now, seems pointless to me, because here in Mexico, is more expensive, is like 140 dlls because the import taxes and plus, so I stay with Snow Leopard on the Mac Mini. I'll wait until icloud is released to buy the Apple TV, but right now, I stick to my Mac Mini with snow leopard connected to my LCD TV. I also have a MacBook Pro running Lion, so I have the best of both worlds! I'll give no more money to Apple, for now.

Hello,

Edumara's post titled "A Temporary Solution" (see the top of page 8 in this thread) on a work around works great. You just have to play a little of each song you want Front Row to recognize in itunes 10.3.1 first and then it works. I copied his script in apple scripteditor and saved it as an application. Then followed his directions EXACTLY. Next, ran the script and opened itunes 10.3.1. Played the first few seconds of each song and closed itunes 10.3.1. Opened Front Row and it worked!!

I'm thrilled as I use this at work ALOT!!

Thank you so much Edumara. You're AWESOME!!

Michelle 🙂
