Disable autosave

Hello, anybody figured out how one can disable autosave? I just *don't* want it, and I have my reasons.

Thanks,

I don't think so.

Of course in an ideal world one would test any new software, but when you have one machine and you are upgrading an existing operating system, its a bit difficult to transfer everything over and create 2 instances and work/test whilst you are still busy trying to run a business. One would simply expect that something as basic as autosave would be optional. The rest of the operating system works fine so far and I would expect nothing less from a direct upgrade on the same operating system.

And by the way, choose your metaphors more carefully. I didn't upgrade my operating system like some kid playing with matches. When I strike a match because I am using it for a serious purpose, not playing with them, I expect them to light in a safe and controlled way so I can use them appropriately. I do not expect them to explode so my fingers get burnt. Sorry, but your analogy is more than a little flawed.

Well, some of us must live with decisions made by others in a company. I would not have moved to Lion so quickly but these decisions aren't mine.

In this case, complain against the decision maker, not against Apple.

To be the AW6 successor, iWork MUST integrate a TRUE DB, not a list organizer !

As I wrote quite often, I write here what I want, the way I want.

I repeat that you played with matches.

Nowadays, an external HD costs less than a bargain.

I bought Lion from my internal HD, but I stopped carefully the install process.

This way, I was able to copy the installer on an USB key to be able to reuse it when needed.

I installed the operating system on a re-formatted FireWire 500 Gbytes HD and just added iWork on it.

No, I also installed a virtual machine able to run AppleWorks on it.

Now, when I have spare time, I boot on this HD and test the behavior of the new beast.

You didn't behave seriously but like a child discovering a new game in a shop.

Thank you. I hardly think we can compare installing an upgrade to an operating system with playing with matches, but then Yvan has plainly stated that he reserves the right to be insulting on this board. He's quite at liberty to do so, and I hope he gets a kick out of it. I have better things to do, and I make my serious point once more. The operating system is fine as it should be - its not a new operating system its an upgrade - its called OS X just like all the previous incarnations.

I would prefer and I hope Apple are watching these boards, that the autosave feature would be optional. I am testing the operating system, and if it is not good enough to do my business I will simply go back to the previous version. My request is that a future release creates an optional autosave feature. Otherwise I am quite happy. By the way, I'm intrigued, do you also test a box of matches when you buy them and then when you burn your fingers go back to using a flint to light the fire?

Yvan,

I think is silly of you to think Pros only have one computer and are risking their mainframe. In my case I have three. One G4 with Tiger for testing, a MacPro (my main computer) with SL, and a MacBook Pro for business on the go with Lion for a week (currently is SL again).

We would never put in risk our main computers to try a new OS; even when TimeCapsule is a most in our case, and everything is backed up, I would't do that.

Anyway, as a Pros we needed to give a try to Lion. It shows better performance than SL and that's why I am asking Apple as many people here, that Autosave be optional, otherwise we'll hardly make the change.

Don't be surprised that you have to repeat yourself all the time and people still ignore you.

I hate to tell you this, but there's only one person behaving like a child on this forum. I don't know what your problem is, but you obviously have nothing better to do than trying lamely to be insulting. Perhaps you were never loved as a child. I feel sorry for you.

I was hoping for one result from my initial posting about autosave, and that was that the message would get through to Apple that it should be optional. I didn't expect to be insulted, but if we get optional autosave it will all be worthwhile. 🙂

You behave like a child surprised with the fingers in the jam bowl but it's not really surprising.

Of course, I say thank you for your psycho-analyst consultation.

I just wish to every children on earth a childhood like mine.

Well, I use Slow Leopard again now. Returning was no problem, as I had a backup (of course). But I still think it is worth to complain, as support for SL will stop in about 2 years, and I would be happy to still be a OS X user then. I also sent feedback, but I would say - If I would be the responsible person at Apple for a new function like Auto Save and Versions I would read threads like this in the Forum ;-)

My proposal to make everyone happy would be to have three options in each application supporting auto save:

a) Auto Save on (default) -> As it is now in Lion

b) Auto Save off -> As it is in Snow Leopard

c) Ask

Option c) would be the prefered one for me. When opening an existing document it should open and display as usual. As soon as I try to make the first change a popup should come up asking if I want to enable Auto Save or not for the changes I do until I close the document again.

Furthermore it would be perfect for me, if there would be a small checkbox on the popup to decide if I want to create an new version or not.

Hi,

To add my vote (and yes I have sent feedback to apple), autosave should only be done to temp files never the original, users should always be able to discard any changes they want easily, and users should be able to control when and if versions are made. Period! There are no excuses for any other behavior, IMHO.

Users should also be able to remove all copies of file (including earlier versions that are autosaved) easily with out needing to become root just to remove the "chunks" and full file copies that are made and hidden away.

Preference Files, Mail Files, etc should not be stuck in hidden folders (although this is easy to fix).

Since Apple has unthinkingly not provided a way to turn this mess off, I have been forced to replace as many of the Apple official software packages that do Autosave / Versioning as I could.

Here is what I found so far:

TextEdit.app -> TextWrangler.app

- free download from BBEdit creator

- uses emacs basic editing keys for line editing

(Ctl-K for kill line, Ctl-A to front of line, etc just like TextEdit)

- emacs line editing has become so ingrained in me

over the last 30 years that nothing else will work

- can be configured so it looks and act like TextEdit only better

Preview.app -> JustLooking.app

- a free download image previewer that seems

pretty nice and does what I want it to do.

Preview.app -> Adobe Acrobat Reader

- works as a nice pdf viewer

iWork apps -> sadly replaced with LibreOffice / NeoOffice

- free downloads, as compatible with Office as Pages / Numbers are at least

If anyone else has other good replacement app ideas to add to the list please let me know. My goal is to remove / replace as many Apple Autosave / Versioning apps as humanly possible.

Thanks in advance for any additional ideas

I changed from Windows to Mac when Vista came out. Vista had all those annoying new features. But currently I strongly think about switching back to Windows, since Windows 7 allows you to disable all those features and has become better than vista was.

Windows allows you to disable all those "nice-looking-but-useless" Window decorations and effects. With classical design and some fine-tuning Windows is very fast. Since there are some features like autosave or animations YOU cann't disable in Lion, I think Lion became like Vista - what I wanted to left.

At least apple allowed to disable inverted scrolling, otherwise I never installed Lion.

Maybe Lion is the experience for Apple, Microsoft had with Vista 😉 It was hated by most users 😉
