LOOK! I installed Lion but the firewire is NOT recognized on my Mac Pro!

I installed LION on my Mac Pro, 2009, 2x 2.26 8 core and BOOM! I could no longer use my studio which is run by a Tascam FW1884 DAW control. When I hooked it up to my macbook ALSO running 10.7, it worked fine! UGH! Then I called tech support and they said I have to go to Genius Bar, I aint got the time to drag my studio down there so I went back to Snow Leopard. Anyone else have this issue?

@digmas1: it's in 32 bit mode. Does it work for Logic? I can't imagine. Also the faders? They show some really erratic behavior. i.e. I have to touch one fader so I can move another. It's really a bug, not a feature- it's completely unpredictable.

If the drivers would work for LION, I'm sure tascam would put that on the website.

@dis1recording: I'm working on that too man. Doin' some Yoga, breathing exercises (inhale.... let go TASCAM... forget all the Bad TASCAM you have ever known... replace those evil TASCAM thougts with beautiful words like 'Sapphire, MOTU, **** even Behringer will do.... just FORGET TASCAM

seriously, I'm thinking about a sapphire, or maybe apogee duet, or RME babyface

I have the Tascam 1884 and have had many of the same problems.

I would say that the driver support seems like it wasn't budgeted for.

Not just this latest breakdown but since I bought mine 5 years ago it has been one breakdown after another. Always the drivers having a conflict with some Apple update.

Same issues for the last 5 years.

It's a miracle that they did the 1.7 drivers that cobbled it together for one more round.

Sorry too because I really like the Tascam gear when it works. I have been a Tascam and Apple fan from way back but it's obvious that they are not talking too much.

They need a lesson from AJA.

I just sent this to Tascam/ Lotta type errors

I do not have a question but i do have a comment. Tascam has made a great products since as long as i can remember. I remember buying some of the best work horses on the market if you owned one of there reel to reel tape decks. The most incredible control surface on the market was and still is the Tascam FW-1884. The unit is the only device on the market that has features such as copy, paste, cut, markers, undo and many more i can't name. A true great product is rated by no one in 5 years can come close to making a better unit. The price on the the 1884 was reasonable the ease of use was very friendly. I think the music world was waiting for a FW-1884 version II. They didn't get it but, what we got was a discontinued unit with no driver support. I hope you share this with someone that can make a difference because I'm not sure who to direct this email too or maybe i did. Go to www.apple.com and start reading the apple forum. These are users of the FW-1884. There so many negative complaints about you not updating your drivers for Lion that it is very concerning. These voices of users are saying because of your non support they will NEVER buy another Tascam product. i have been looking at your new products and they are not that appealing except for you DW-3200 and 4800. The rest of the products you are selling are not killer products and the DW series are out of the price range of the the in home project studio owner. You have a great company please consider the things i have mentioned. When my FW-1884 stops working i afraid i will do the same thing as the other users I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TASCAM UNIT. What is your reply?

@Reel: What a thoughtful and sophistaced response. You're right of course.. They have great products. I started with a us-122, very happy with that (on windows). That's why I decided to take the next step, the FW-1884. Expandabe with FE8, 5.1, etc.

Anyway; sold my us-122 to the singer of my band. Immediately he got into trouble, for lack of support. Didn't think much of it then. But within 3 years after I bought this device (NEW), and was changing to Mac, heard about the problems. Can't argue with their decision to discontinue. But having a useless device just 2,5 years after I bought it is a bit to much. Especially with a (semi-) professional device.

What bothers me must is their apparant lack of policy regarding Drivers. I can understand they won't continue forever. But most equipment is written of in 5 years, so being in this semi-professional market, I'd see that 5+ would be a decent policy. Give the users the time to write it off financially. I'll write the details later, but now it's like I bought this for 1200 Euro, and just 3 years later I can't even get 250 for it... and I can't use it for recording cause I need reliable equipment.

Anyway, I'm very curious what they write. My best guess is: they'll ignore it, as their current policy seems to be: we'll see what we can get away with. I hope they prove me wrong, really.

I have an FW1884 as the centerpiece of my studio. Recording on a 2009 Intel Mac. I love the FW1884. Pre's sound clear and transparent. I use it to contol Logic 9 and PT 9. I haven't upgraded to Lion, so it is still working fine. I have several external pre's that I like to use and connect them via the insert jacks. I also run a Platinum Octopre in thru the ADAT, and a digital MPA thru SPDIF. Hook it all to an external clock. Beautiful workflow. I'm very disapointed to hear that Tascam isn't supporting Lion. I was considering buying a new desk to hold the FW1884 and adding a pair of FE8's. I was also considering buying a new Mac Pro. Not anymore. I will keep the old machine as long as possible. When I need to upgrade the computer, I will be forced onto Lion. At that point I think I will switch over to an Allen & Heath GS-R24 as my centerpiece. Unfortunate. Tascam doesn't have a device in their line-up to replace an aging FW1884, let alone supporting the one we already own.

Maybe its part of Tascam's going-out-of-business Sale. I don't plan to let them take me with them.

I'm using 10.6.8 on a quad i7 mac pro with Logic and Final Cut Pro and it's running pretty well. No pops or junk like that but sometimes when I start up it won't be on. Have to re-start then it come up and works.

I actually had to install a third party firewire card to get it going on this mac at first but now it works with

the native firewire plug. It was crashing the whole computer when I first bought the new mac pro.

Still love the Tascam gear. I wish they would get their act together. I'm using the FW1884 to monitor surround sound in FCP and Logic but Apple just broke FCP so I can't use faders.

Why does progress have to be so painfull and bring my actual work to a standstill?

Feb 10, 2012 8:47 PM in response to MrBongo

I have my trusty 1884... and a Intel Mac... but I use Nuendo 5.5. I recently made the switch to Lion... OK. It does not work in 64 bit mode... BUT in 32 bit mode it works very well... no hiccups in the last 2 weeks. functions just like Snow leopard but can take avantage of all othet Lion features. Still no response from Tascam and am looking for alternatives... but works fine for now..

Feb 10, 2012 9:05 PM in response to digmas

It is good news that you can get it to work in Lion, but I wouldn't say you are accessing "all" the features of Lion by running it in 32 bit mode. From my understanding you aren't accessing more than 4 Gig of memory unless you are in 64 bit mode because the length of the addresses over that don't fit in a 32 bit byte. I'm sure there are other things that you are missing because you are limping along in 32 bit mode just to make your Tascam unit work. Still say it's unfortunate.

Feb 10, 2012 10:21 PM in response to PapaPugs

Yes PapaPugs you are very correct... I am not accessing all the benefits of 64 bit (a sad story)... What I meant tp say was some of the icloud features and syncing features that Lion has... I have a video operation (several macs in studio) as well and the new avid only works in Lion and Final Cut 8 & 10 both work in Lion... I have also contacted Tascam... but to know avail... I am trying to figure out the next chapter in a control surface. I hate to say it but I do love the 1884... althought I am majorly upset at Tascam... What about Frontier?? Their part of the 1884 as well.

Although I do not know what part...

Feb 11, 2012 5:00 AM in response to digmas

Well, it certainly is great to hear so many of you take the time to share your story. Here's a new update: rest assured that customers aren't the only ones with a changing attitude towards Tascam. I went to the music store where I bought this device less than 3 years ago (1295 Euro's, that's 1709 USD). It's one of the biggest music stores in Holland. I wasn't the first customer to come back with this story, and he called Tascam. He was told the same thing: 'out of luck'. So this store is stuck with several devices too they can't sell. As a result he told me he didn't buy any Tascam for quite a while.

Anyway, I quess it's pretty clear. Tascam won't budge easily, but I'm sure staying on this forrum won't be enough. So, here's what I'll do: I've googled 'Tascam Review' and I'm going to take the FIRST 5 hits, and post a simple and honest review and advice of my own: "If you're thinking about buying a TAscam, be sure to look beyond the technical merits. They have a pretty bad reputation regarding their customer service, especially regarding Apple. See for yourself, go here and take your pick, there are a lot of angry customers regarding several Tascam products that are left unsupported: https://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?peopleEnabled=true&userID=&containerTy pe=&container=&spotlight=true&q=tascam+lion "
