LOOK! I installed Lion but the firewire is NOT recognized on my Mac Pro!

I installed LION on my Mac Pro, 2009, 2x 2.26 8 core and BOOM! I could no longer use my studio which is run by a Tascam FW1884 DAW control. When I hooked it up to my macbook ALSO running 10.7, it worked fine! UGH! Then I called tech support and they said I have to go to Genius Bar, I aint got the time to drag my studio down there so I went back to Snow Leopard. Anyone else have this issue?

Mr. Sannerman

You seem like a nice guy maybe I can help you. You said in your reply that you are in 32bit mode. If you want to run Logic in 64 bit mode with with the Tascam it runs great in 64bit mode.

1. Make sure you are running System software 10.6.8

2. Go To Logic in your application folder click on it one time to highlight it do not open it.

3. Go to the File window while Logic is still highlighted

4. Select Get Info from the list

5. Now you will see a little box that will say

6. OPEN IN 32BIT MODE

7. Make sure this box is UNCHECKED

Now you can run Logic in 64bit mode and this will allow you to run all your plugins in 64bit mode which uses less memory. When you do this the Tascam FW1884 will run great with no problems.

DO NOT HOLD DOWN THE 6 & 4 keys while powering up your computer this will put the whole computer in 64bit mode. The Tascam unit will not work if you do that.

Good luck sannerman.

I think Apple is coming out with a whole new version of Logic. I'm sure it will only run with Mountain Lion. If you update to the new Logic with all the new features it will have, our Tascam units will not work with the update. It's time to sell or trade the FW-1884 maybe Fred Flinstone can use it. LOL

Hi Reel,

The problem is not that Logic is in 64 bit mode -- it is the system kernel. In Lion you can boot the kernel in 32 bit mode to get the Tascam to be recognized, but you cannot do that any more in Mountain Lion.

My solution to this problem was to buy a portable FW drive, and install Snow Leopard and Logic, etc, on that. I can boot from that drive and use the Tascam whenever I want, with full functionality. It works great, and the drive has two FW ports, so I can daisy-chain to another drive if I want, or just use a USB2 drive for the projects (record-to) drive.

The Tascam is still a great machine, and although Fred Flinstone might be interested, he's not getting mine any time soon. When the new Logic comes out (which I imagine will be sometime around the release of iOS6 - I'm betting there will be some integration with mobile devices), I'll see if it offers enough improvements to warrant upgrading. I'll still have 9.1.7 on my Snow Leopard drive.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm still trying to understand 32 vs. 64 bit. So you can have your system kernel running 32 bit, yet the program is running in 64 bit mode? How does this work?

What is the difference between running system kernel AND Logic in 64 bit mode, vs. system 32 bit but Logic 64 bit. I would very much like to take advantage of better software, updates, 64 bit, etc. but still be able to use the FW1884. I really don't care too much about OSX upgrades, at least for the time being. I'm still on Snow Leopard, and it seems to work fine for me with all my hardware

Bignyoung. There are no stupid questions only stupid answers. First of all follow these steps and you must be running Snow Leopard Version 10.6.8.

1. Make sure you are running System software 10.6.8

Doing this will allow you to run your software instrument and plugins without getting out of memory error so quickly. Running Logic in 64bit increases your memory for your plugins. Most of the software manufactors are making 32bit and 64bit plugins. Select 64bit plugins instead of the 32bit plugins. If you have older plugins Logic has a bridge program which is automatic for them. I'm running Ominsphere, trilian, native instruments Ultimate 8 and a host of other plugs including Duenda, and UAD-2 No problems

Cheers Reel!

I was just about to hit the streets with my 'Tascam is possessed by Demons' banner, but if this works, I gotta stash it somewhere for later use. Or by then I might have found that Fred Flinstone cave! :-) ).

Seriously, I will try that if I have time somewhere this week, if it works, I will check back here with a message of peace and hope!

Well after getting the rusty end of a consumer shaft from tascam I have decided that I will not be using their products anymore. I put my fw1082 on kijiji.ca for sale and maybe some windows schmuck will buy it. Apparently it still works in win 8. I got some extra work in a liquor store (as I am very starving-artist-shiek). Picked up a motu ultralite mk3 hybrid and and offering straight trade with the tascam for maybe an iPad 1 or 2. I might even get cash and get a QuNeo from Keith McMillan. ALthough I think I would rather have the iPad.

Ok so what is an affordable control surface and audio interface that works on 10.8? I have an IMAC running 10.8.2 which only has FIREWIRE 800... I need something that I can use with this. Every piece of gear that I find doesnt support 10.8 ... I cant afford the SSL device someone said they purchased.. I just with I could find soethng resonable that works..

Any help appreciated....

Jumping into an old thread here, but seems relevant ... So now that Logic Pro X is out, and it requires Mountain Lion, and Mountain Lion cannot boot into 32-bit kernel, it looks like LPX cannot be used with the FW1884 (and other driver-abandoned Tascam products), right?

But hold on -- the Logic Pro X Tech Specs page, under Control Surface Support, lists "Tascam: FE-8, FW-1082, FW-1884, US-224, US-2400, US-428".

Anyone know what the story is there? Has Apple written a new FW driver for it? Or is it supported as a control surface only, perhaps through a MIDI connection?

I have exactly the same problem, and still cannot believe that Tascam doesn't work out a newer version of software for their "older" users, who spend money 3 years ago on a brand new device, which is now useless.

I found this online petition, few more people needed, so we can at least try it as a last resort...
