Audio issue (headphone output no working)

Anyone else had this problem... after installing Lion today I cannot get audio out of the headphone socket, when I insert headphones (I've tried two pairs, both of which I know are working fine) the audio just continues to play via the built in speakers. Also, in the system prefs the headphone socket doesn't appear in the list as an output option, only Internal Speakers? It's as though the system doesn't recognise the headphone socket

any ideas greatly received

I have the same problem. I upgraded to Lion last night and tried to use my headphone today but it no longer works. I also tried two different headphones which were both working fine previously, and got the same problem. Also, as you mentioned, System Preferences/Sound/Output does not show Headphones as an option, only Internal Speakers.

This appears to be a bug with Lion.

Could someone from Apple look into this?

i am using apple iphone headphone.

I am using a new mac. I just installed the latest update.

currently, i tried to plugin the iphone headphone, it works. but the volume control button on the earphone doesn't work.

i pull out and plug in the headphone again. the sound will come out from my speaker. it seems like mac didn't detect any headphone.

I have tried to restart. it will work for the first plugin. after that it will not work again.

I also have tried reset the PRAM.

Same thing.. first time headphone work without volume control over the headphone. after i re-plugin. sound will only come from speaker.

Hope to hear from you soon so that my new MBA can work.

Hello!

I know this is an old thread but I have just experienced a similar issue on my MacBook Pro mid-2010 running on Mavericks 10.10.2. Here's the thing: my mid-2010 MacBook doesn't support AirPlay, but I have an Apple TV, so I had to download a software called AirParrot, which allows me to use AirPlay.

I just found out that when I plugged my headphones in, the audio output would actually switch to AirParrot instead of "headphones" (I saw this in System Preferences > Sound). I then manually set it back to "headphones", and voilà!

This is a really quick answer, but I hope it can help!!

I had a similar problem and I solved it by just making sure than in the System Preferences / Sound the Output menu (blue button between Sound Effects and Input) with Internal Speakers (built-in) highlighted has Sound Output selected in the "Use audio port for:". Now, when you plug in your headphones it should recognise them. After installing some audio sampling software on my MacBook, this option mysteriously changed into Sound Input which stopped headphones jack from being activated.

I hope it helps.

So it's not just in space no-one can hear you scream.Looks like a bit of bad release code, with varying effects and a few solutions.

For me - with neither headphones or external speakers able to work from the jack, but the sound fine from the built-ins - the answer was in...

System preferences/Sound/Output: I found the Output Volume 'mute' button was ticked - presumably switched during the upgrade. Untick and... headphones and speakers back to life!

Hope this helps someone out there.

Thanks LT.

I am newer to Apple computers, I have a Mac, so I can't tell you the OS version. I know I have the most recent as of 1/14/16. I have had this problem for the past 3 months and just ignored it until I needed to use Skype w/ headphones. I used your solution, but had to deviate to get the same results. I followed your directions via applications to get into Audio devices, HOWEVER my left window showed Microsoft's "logMeIn Remote Sound" as well. Changing the 2ch-32bit integer didn't work. But after right-clicking on Built-In Output and clicked Use this device for sound output (with the headphones plugged in). The headphones started working! I came to this conclusion because when I had Audio Devices open and plugged in the headphones and saw the head phone emblem switch from Built-In to LogMeIn. Showing me that somehow Microsoft assumed default. So I changed that and bam, there was sound in my ears. I appreciate you help. I hope this helps anyone else with Mac/audio issues after the upgrade.
