No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

For everyone who is having HDTV display and digital audio output problems take the advice of a few of the other posters here and go out and purchase Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It retails for $129 but Amazon has it for sale for around $80. It will fix your Mac HDMI out video and audio problems period. Yeah it ***** you have to buy it but if you have the HDMI problems it was designed to fix you already have spent several thousand dollars on computer and home theater equipment so what is another $80 to keep everything working right.

By way of background, I have a late 2010 Quadcore I7 Imac, which also doubles as a HTPC for a 7.1 speaker set up in my loft with my Denon 4308CI amp and Panasonic HDTV (via a long 100 ft HDMI run). I use the Imac bluetooth keyboard and trackpad in the living room to control the Imac when viewing on my HDTV. The set up worked great with Snow Leopard until the 10.6.8 update killed my digital audio. I reverted to 10.6.7 to fix the issue until Lion 10.7.1 was released and I read on another Apple thread that the HDMI out issues had been solved. When I upgraded I lost both HDMI video and audio and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve the issues but it did not.

Anyhow, I was getting ready to go back to 10.6.7 again but read this whole thread for solutions and stumbled on the Gefen hardware solution. After doing some research it seems that many HTPCs have HDMI out problems with software updates and AV receivers and not just Apple. I bought the product, spoke to Gefen tech support before the set up as their instrucitons are a little unclear but after that I set up the product in no time and now everything is working perfectly once again. Best of all, I don't have to worry now about future software updates killing my HDMI out video and audio again.

BTW, if you use a AV receiver with your Imac just use one of the preset Gefen generic codes at set up as storing your HDTV's EDID in the Gefen may not allow you to push multi channel digital audio as well as video from your Imac.

I'd like to share my experiences connecting my Mac Mini (mid 2011) to a Benq E2200HD monitor. If i let the Mini enter sleep mode, or let the Mini put the monitor in sleep mode (turn off display), the monitor won't display any image when waking up. The monitor lights up and displays the message "No signal detected". The only solution is to restart the Mini. The monitor works just fine when using the DVI connection instead of HDMI. I've never had any trouble with this monitor when connected to other computers.

The Mini works just fine when connecting to my LCD TV, so it seems to be some kind of compatibility issue.

Talked to Apple today, they said to me that the mini is made for an external monitor and not for a receiver. The doesn't guarantee that it will work with any third party products like a receiver and will not develop a new software for solve the problem, they will only help you if you have a problem between the mini and a TV/monitor. End of that story...

So what are we going to do about this problem? Ask yamaha/pioneer etc? I don't know, but i will probably wait for Yamaha:s answer and depending on that maybe go to the store and try diffrent receivers to see if ANYONE works in 1080p. If it is so i will throw out the yamaha receiver through the window...

p-a_backström: Yes inded, it is EMBARRASING. Apple only makes worse when they say that it is not their products fault and that is my problem.

I also asked them if Apple tv3/tv2 is compatible with a reciever (because it is a mediacenter and usually you plug it in to your receiver) i got the same answer for it as for the mini, so it would probably not work either. The only way to know that it is going to work is to try it in the receiver, can be really expensive if you buying the receiver first.

Conclution: Apple is to **sy to develop the new ML OS and won't/can't solve this problem beacuse it is not enought peolpe with a mac->receiver->Tv - problem and if, and I say IF, they going to solve it I don't think it will happen before ML is released.

But i still want to know if anyone has a mini throu a receiver that works fine in 1080p!

I will probably go to a hifi-store tomorrow with the mini and try some receivers 500$-1200$ price range, i will let you know about the result of it. I'm going to test following brands:

- Harman/Kardon

- Marantz

- Onkyo

- Pioneer (especially VSX-921/ VSX-1021)

If it is a specific model you want me to try (of the above modells) let me know and i will try it if they have it in stock.

I really hope i find a receiver that works fine with mac mini.

Forwarding this from MacRumors, so perhaps a the HDMI issue will finally be fixed soon.

The issue seems to be a known one related to the Intel HD 4000 graphics used in the Mac mini, and Intel has now acknowledged the issue in the Mac mini and indicated that a fix is on the way. A timeframe for a fix delivered through Apple is, however, so far unknown.

We are aware of the flickering issue, and there will be a fix provided in the future. The overall flicker issue is also being addressed here; http://communities.intel.com/thread/32932

Your OEM (Apple) will provide the driver with the fix when they are done configuring our driver (that has the fix). An ETA on this is currently unknown.

Apple has begun developer seeding of OS X 10.8.3 with an emphasis on graphics drivers, but it seems to be unclear at the present time whether the current beta version of OS X 10.8.3 contains the specific fix for this issue.

I just received a brand new Mac Mini and had the HDMI poor quality output problem. I thought I was going to have to wait until 4.8.3 released or buy a different cable (DVI to HDMI with the included dongle), but thanks to this tip I just changed the setting on my Samsung 32" displays to DVI-PC (on the Display itself) and the video instantly correct and now looks perfect.

Thanks to Kenneth for sharing this solution.

Yeah guys it looks like this is a normal issue with Lion on all hdmi tvs since I have the same issue with my Samsung HDTV.

It works only if you have it connected to a monitor only so I hope Apple takes this under consideration and fix this soon because I had to disconect all my setup to restore my mac to Snow all over again with a monitor.

Lion makes hdmi minis useless if this is not fix. But then again, they never fix the audio on Snow Leopard when you restart your computer you always had to set manually the audio to HDMI.

Patience my friends and lets wait for an update fix because is not something you can fix.

Jul 23, 2011 4:37 PM in response to Zbegon

I just took Zbegon's advice and called this in as well. On top of the regular case, the advisor also recommended sending these reports in to apple.com/feedback to try to make this a higher visibility issue. So I add that to the advice of calling in a support case.

On a side note, if anyone else uses AC3 passthru audio and finds they lose stereo sound after playing a video with AC3, let them know that the appleHDA.kext file from 10.6.7 did not have this problem but 10.6.8 and Lion are broken. With any luck, we can get both of these fixed in the first update to Lion.

I am having the same issues with the hdmi output when connected to a Denon receiver. The workaround I am using is to start the Mini with the hdmi cable disconnected. When the Mini is left ON but not in use, disconnect the hdmi cable from the Mini. In addition to the hdmi issues, the OS is getting into a Panick mode periodically and asks me to restart the Mini.

Jul 26, 2011 4:30 PM in response to Ratboy

Apple tech just called me back, (I'm really impressed) he said that engineering has got gobs of feedback on this issue now(two days ago they acted like I was the only one, so thanks to those who called to report) and they are on it. Not sure what they plan to do but I hope that the fix will be in 10.7.1 as it's release is imminent( I got the 10.7.2 developer seed the other day,no fix there) he did say to keep watch for software updates. I restored to Snow Leopard so I could at least use my mini, so I'm just gonna watch the blogs they usually break the story for every software update. Or one could just go to the App store and see which version is being sold. I will then re-install and hope they fixed the bug.

Discovered some thing new to add to the confusion. If I am

connected to my Mini from another Mac with Screen Sharing,

I can power down receiver and TV and then end the Screen

Sharing session and then come back later, turn on the TV

and then receiver, and all was peachy.

Thinking that maybe, just maybe, everything was fixed, turned off TV

and turned it back on. Video trashed yet again. Had to do the

PRAM/SMC thing yet again.

Connected via Screen Sharing again when things working, and could do

any combination of turning on and off of TV or receiver without any issue.

Strange.

Suggestion and my plans

I have been using a small lousy dell monitor in lieu of my 5 yr old Philips 24" HDTV (that has had 2 minis used on it during its life). I spoke with 2nd tier tech a day or two after lion came out about the problem and they had me send in logs for the engineers. Not my only issue with my 2009 mini and had another call to tech support (zoom turns off after sleep). I just bet they are swamped and I keep checking for a software update but who knows. They will get it figured out, but in the meantime you might try and borrow or buy a cheap display.

I have pushed up my planned new TV purchase by a few months and am most likely buying a 42" Vizio 3D 1080p LCD from Walmart tonight. I will surely be on here b&(*@#ing if that doesn't work. Whenever I try and detect my phillips 24" display it shuts down video output from the mini. I then have to start up with my 15" dell crud display. I can however, unplug the Dell display and then plug into the 24" phillips tv and use it as long as I don't shut down or try and detect display in sys pref. I am using the mini display port to vga adaptor for the pc in on my 23pf5320 philips.

<sarcasm> It just doesn't work. </sarcasm>

I am being patient for the time being but this is the first time in 4 yrs I have cringed about thinking of returning to PC. Sure, we would like to see a comment from Apple on this but I doubt that will happen soon if at all. I am not going to early adopt so soon next time that is for sure.

Aug 20, 2011 3:18 AM in response to ODOL26

To all for whom the fix doesn't work: it is meant for Philips TV's... not Samsun, not Sharp, etc Now, i'm pretty sure if you'd just go to your library, move the Display overrides to some other location, your desktop for example, and after that reboot there is a chance it'll work.... If it doesn't simply put back the folder in it's original location.....
