No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

For everyone who is having HDTV display and digital audio output problems take the advice of a few of the other posters here and go out and purchase Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It retails for $129 but Amazon has it for sale for around $80. It will fix your Mac HDMI out video and audio problems period. Yeah it ***** you have to buy it but if you have the HDMI problems it was designed to fix you already have spent several thousand dollars on computer and home theater equipment so what is another $80 to keep everything working right.

By way of background, I have a late 2010 Quadcore I7 Imac, which also doubles as a HTPC for a 7.1 speaker set up in my loft with my Denon 4308CI amp and Panasonic HDTV (via a long 100 ft HDMI run). I use the Imac bluetooth keyboard and trackpad in the living room to control the Imac when viewing on my HDTV. The set up worked great with Snow Leopard until the 10.6.8 update killed my digital audio. I reverted to 10.6.7 to fix the issue until Lion 10.7.1 was released and I read on another Apple thread that the HDMI out issues had been solved. When I upgraded I lost both HDMI video and audio and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve the issues but it did not.

Anyhow, I was getting ready to go back to 10.6.7 again but read this whole thread for solutions and stumbled on the Gefen hardware solution. After doing some research it seems that many HTPCs have HDMI out problems with software updates and AV receivers and not just Apple. I bought the product, spoke to Gefen tech support before the set up as their instrucitons are a little unclear but after that I set up the product in no time and now everything is working perfectly once again. Best of all, I don't have to worry now about future software updates killing my HDMI out video and audio again.

BTW, if you use a AV receiver with your Imac just use one of the preset Gefen generic codes at set up as storing your HDTV's EDID in the Gefen may not allow you to push multi channel digital audio as well as video from your Imac.

I have a Mac Mini 2010, which I have used, as media centerfor some time. I never had a problem until the Lion 10.7.1 update occurred. After this time, any time I changed resolutions, I would loose the signal to myHDTV. After the update, my Mac Mini would always boot up to 1080P and ifchanged to anything else, the signal would be lost. I also recently got a new3D TV and have verified the same problem occurs with both a Samsung and LG PlasmaTV.

I was so frustrated by this problem that I did a freshvirgin install of Lion in an attempt to fix it. I had no problems changing resolutionsat all with Lion 10.7. After updating to 10.7.1, the problem came backidentical to before.

Thing I will go back to Snow Leopard until Apple acknowledgesand fixing the problem.

ok... to help troubleshoot problems... please download switchresx or similar utility on a windows computer connected via hdmi to your tv and export the EDID.

I used the EDID to use this custom resolution for my Sony because the tv overscans the picture:

almost everything is back to normal for me after redownloading lion from the app store over the weekend. any combination of restart, sleep, display sleep, etc seems to work. i still have to adjust the underscan instead of leaving it off, though. that seems to be the only difference.

after going through this, as soon as apple tv gets 1080 and it's plex app can do everything the mac one can, i'm switching.

Dec 8, 2011 12:58 PM in response to Robert Ronning

I noticed lately that this problem has died off for many. I have not been hearing anyone with a Denon receiver or Pioneer plasma complaining. There's been a Lion upgrade since I first reported trouble. So last week I reinstalled Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini and the display has worked fine consistently. I'm pleased now, and I hope that Apple fixes this issue for the rest of you.

Jan 28, 2012 10:43 PM in response to raduga

Apple issued a firmware update for some Mac models including the mid-2010 mini this past week. The notes only refer to Lion recovery so I'm not holding out hope that it includes a fix for this HDMI issue. Apparently, this is not big enough of a problem for Apple to address as a high priority, so please log a support issue with Apple or if your unit is still fairly new, contact Applecare.

Running OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5, my connection to a Sony Bravia vía a miniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter has ended working after Mountain Lion update at my iMac 11,3, i am curious to see that there are new adapters in apple store online, the same one that seems to be a lot of bad reviews from several customers, it is arround 30 dollars or so, this new adapters have solved the issue for this "Update consequences" but, as a consumer i am not longer being confident with Mac Fancy Products, MY ADAPTER WORKED PERFECTLY BEFORE LION UPDATE, and i just spend 30 bucks for something that i already had, so shame on you Apple.

Jul 22, 2011 2:37 PM in response to Ratboy

Well it just plain looks like Lion BREAKS any HDMI

connection to the Mini. Odds seem less than a coin toss

as to whether you will get video or not at any given restart.

May give a shot at doing a clean install. For now, going back

to SL. Well, at least Lion worked on 2 of my computers.

Sometimes I wonder if the Mini isn't the ugly sister of the

Mac line up that no one pays a lot of attention to.

Jul 22, 2011 8:18 PM in response to Ratboy

Same issue here, I got "change source resolution" from my LED TV connected via HDMI to HDMI. Called Apple no help really but tried very hard, called Phillips (maker of my TV) we tried to update the firmware for the TV, no luck. I went to Best Buy and bought a Mini Display to HDMI cable and that works every other restart. I even wiped my HD and total system restore to last Time Machine backup, then re-downloaded Lion, still having issues. Good thing the OS wasn't super expensive. Kinda disappointed that I spent 29$ then spent 29$ more for the cable and still do not have my flawless operating condition Mac back. Feels like those times when I was a PC user.
