No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

For everyone who is having HDTV display and digital audio output problems take the advice of a few of the other posters here and go out and purchase Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It retails for $129 but Amazon has it for sale for around $80. It will fix your Mac HDMI out video and audio problems period. Yeah it ***** you have to buy it but if you have the HDMI problems it was designed to fix you already have spent several thousand dollars on computer and home theater equipment so what is another $80 to keep everything working right.

By way of background, I have a late 2010 Quadcore I7 Imac, which also doubles as a HTPC for a 7.1 speaker set up in my loft with my Denon 4308CI amp and Panasonic HDTV (via a long 100 ft HDMI run). I use the Imac bluetooth keyboard and trackpad in the living room to control the Imac when viewing on my HDTV. The set up worked great with Snow Leopard until the 10.6.8 update killed my digital audio. I reverted to 10.6.7 to fix the issue until Lion 10.7.1 was released and I read on another Apple thread that the HDMI out issues had been solved. When I upgraded I lost both HDMI video and audio and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve the issues but it did not.

Anyhow, I was getting ready to go back to 10.6.7 again but read this whole thread for solutions and stumbled on the Gefen hardware solution. After doing some research it seems that many HTPCs have HDMI out problems with software updates and AV receivers and not just Apple. I bought the product, spoke to Gefen tech support before the set up as their instrucitons are a little unclear but after that I set up the product in no time and now everything is working perfectly once again. Best of all, I don't have to worry now about future software updates killing my HDMI out video and audio again.

BTW, if you use a AV receiver with your Imac just use one of the preset Gefen generic codes at set up as storing your HDTV's EDID in the Gefen may not allow you to push multi channel digital audio as well as video from your Imac.

What a good thing, i am not alone in the world with this problem.

Same issue for me, iMac (21,5 / mid 2011), connected in HDMI to a Yamaha receiver and TV 42' Panasonic. Sounds and Picture are working during 4 seconds and black screen. TV does not appear in system preferences.

But perfectly works (picture and sounds) when HDMI is directly connected to the TV.

What i Did:

Re-install lion-> Nok

install lion in a new partition->Nok

Reset PRAM->Nok

I was hoping that might have been the key to the problem. It is working now directly connected to the Pioneer TV, but it's not the most ideal setup.

The other thing I've noticed 3 times now is sometimes when I reboot the Mini it seems to get stuck at the very beginning. The display stays black, and there's no activity on the hard drive. The PBX does not start up either because the phones all remain dead. I press the power button hold it until it's off. Then I turn it back on and it boots up OK. This happened 3 times, so there's definitely bugs in this Lion on the Mini. My Mac Pro has Lion on it too but it hasn't had one issue *knock on wood*. The issues are with the Mini.

Well, fired up the system this morning, and everthing

was just fine with Lion. So something I had done actually

worked(see previous post). Something I do recall was that

when I was able to get the system to boot when I was having

all the problems, the Apple on the gray boot screen was

quite large and now it is small. It was like it was booting

at some lower resolution other than 1080p. Perhaps the issue

is that screen resolution is not getting determined at boot time

and there is no fall back. As stated in earlier post, I did change

the resolution and then changed it back. Maybe that did force

something to change.

Anyway, things seem fine now, almost. Still has the audio issue

that was present in 10.6.8. That is, playing DTS or Dolby material

kills playback of stereo tracks without reboot. There is a

workaround by reinstalling an old kext, but don't really want to

mess with system stuff.

ps. PLEX (9.3.3) played back my 1080p material without issue and

Netflix appears to be working just fine (uodated to latest

Silverlight)

The problem for me is he opposite of what you are describing that you are doing. I leave my mini running all the time and I simply turn off my Denon receiver and TV. When I turn my receiver and TV back on, I get no signal. One thing I've noticed is screen sharing when the AV stuff is off shows a different resolution than when it's turned on so it appears to be changing display modes. For whatever reason, it seems like switching back to 1080i doesn't wake up HDMI or kick off a handshake or something.

I suppose I could try turning off the mini but that'd require me to go to my entertainment center and turn it on every time I want to watch something which kinda defeats the purpose of having it set for access via my Harmony remote. Besides, it's hosting some other services on my local network I prefer to have constant access to.

My Denon receiver is doing the same as yours Jarek. Once i turn things off, I cannot get them connected again. I'm now using it without going through the Denon receiver, but it ***** having to connect it directly to my TV. I cannot shut my mini off. There are 22 voip phones connected to the mini - some remote, some here in my house. Shutting it off puts these phones offline, so this is a huge issue for me.

2011 Macbook pro + Philips 42PFL5603 + hdmi-cable = No signal

It used to work well on 1080p, but after the Lion update I haven't got any signal at all. If I change the resolution to 720p, the tv says video format is not supported.

I also tried a 24 inch monitor with the same cable and adapter and it worked fine.

Philips' customer service said Philips has never promised compitability with macs, and because it's about 3 years old, there won't be any software updates to solve the problem.

Is this something that Apple could fix with upcoming Lion updates, or should I just forget it and buy a new tv?

Just received my new mid-2011 mini 2x750GB 8GB Lion mini-server to replace mid-2010 SL mini-server. Sony Bravia KDL40-NX700 through Yamaha RX-2000 receiver (both new in late 2010).

Same issues. Ended up doing initial config through Thunderbolt port to Apple Cinema Display. No problems screen sharing. But no signal through HDMI. So looks like it's a Lion problem for sure. I can live with screen sharing for now, but what an annoyance!

Since I'm using my Mini to run a production PBX it's extremely important that it's stable. I woke up this morning to find all phones down. My phones in my house, and the 10 phones at the remote site that connect to my Mini. What happened? Well, once a week I have the Mini set to reboot on Sunday morning at 3 am. Last week - no problem. This week - it would not restart! The top of the mini is normally warm. This morning it was hot. I turned on the TV to find a black screen. I held the power button for 10 secs to shut it down. It came up to a black screen again. I left it for 15 minutes like that. The computer would not start up and it was hot hot hot. It's like it's spinning it's wheels in some CPU intensive loop. I did the pRAM thing and it came back up. Whether this is an issue with the HDMI or something in addition is wrong I don't know. Regardless, it's time to bail out. It's too stressful worrying that my Mac is not going to start. People could be trying to call 911. A woman in the remote location is pregnant and due August 22, but could go any day and would need the phone. So this is a serious issue for me. I've decided to go back to Snow Leopard.

The strange this is I'm having no issues with Lion on my Mac Pro. As for switching the mini back to SL - it's now 12:55 pm and it is finally installing. You can't just install it on top of the Lion OS. On certain sites, people said to create another partition and it will install. Not for me. After hours of fiddling with this I got it to work by installing Windows XP part way. The Windows install allowed me to delete the partitions and format them as NTFS. Then I used the SL install disk to run Disk Utility and reformat the drive as MAC OS JOURNALED. Now it's finally installing.

I'm really disappointed in Lion. I've never had reason to distrust Apple until now. This OS was not tested properly (if at all) on the Mini. Steve Jobs said Lion would be released in July. It seems it was released come he'll or high waters. I don't think I'll be upgrading Lion to the Mini again. Even if a fix comes along, I won't trust it.

Goodbye Lion, and thanks for wasting several hours of my time and causing a lot of stress.

just installed 10.7.1 but no succes with my philips LCD still same problem. Stupid thing is that if I connect a standard dell LCD monitor to the HDMI (convert to DVI) and my philips on the mini display port (also convert to DVI) I get it on both screens working. However I could do this with out 10.7.1 also if I then switch of the Dell monitor it I also loose the screen on the philips..... So I really hope 10.7.2 does the trick because I other wise go back to 10.6

Aug 20, 2011 5:50 PM in response to HarrgHoyy

Are you on 10.7 or 10.7.1? It's slow because all OS upgrades are slow at the first hours of being installed it's called indexing. It gets all your files organized for things like "spotlight". If your not on 10.7.1 update to it, it should fix most of your issues. It did mine but not all HDMI issues, I'm a Dev and they have seeded one of the final builds of 10.7.2, which is mainly for iCloud, but will include bug fixes on the public release. Release is near.

Aug 25, 2011 2:52 AM in response to Ratboy

Well, it has been a couple weeks now and it looks

like the fix Venturas had used and the 10.7.1 update

has taken care of all my Lion issues on my Mini.

I can turn gear on in any sequence without issue.

It appears that 10.7.1 has fixed issues I had with

extreme studder with iTunes HD content. Also,

audio is fixed now so that I get sound regardless

what has been played.

My setup is:

MacMini->HDMI->Yamaha Receiver->HDMI->Samsung TV

So, at the moment life is good. As soon as Microsoft

fixes their Silverlight plugin and Adobe creates an updated

release version of the Flash plugin, then life will be great.

(Playing Netflix content(Silverlight) or Hulu or Xfinity

content(Flash) has a video "burp" after 15-20 minutes

of a movie).

Just an FYI, the console commands are unecessary. You can enable screen sharing in Preferences. This is for those that don't like using terminal.

Open Preferences

--> Internet and Wireless

--> Sharing

Click on Screen Sharing. Add the user accounts you want to allow remote screen sharing for.

After that, as already mentioned, you can use Finder to connect to the PC, or just use it's VNC address from the finder GO menu: GO --> Connect to Server --> VNC://computername.local

Note: If you don't want to be bothered with being prompted to choose a login under lion or to bump another account off, you can just specify your credentials in the VNC command like so:

vnc://username:password@computername.local/

So in the above example if my username was widget and my password was dohickey and my Mac was call home1 then it would look like this:

vnc://widget:dohickey@home1.local/

One last thing. If you experience bugs like this you should report them to Apple. They are actually very responsive about addressing these. You'll have to create a developer ID but it's free and only takes a few seconds.

Good evening guys,

Im here to tell you my story, last year a purchased a macmini 2010 c2d 2.4ghz.

My tv is a Pioneer kuro KRP-500a and my home cinema a yamaha RX-V467, my mac mini was connected via hdmi to the yamaha receiver and the yamaha receiver to the TV. Everything worked like a charm.

I decided, since i was really happy with the mini, to upgrade myself to the new mini server quad i7 with lion, and its when all started...

Everytime I turn on my tv and select the mini input on the yamaha I get the screen flickering every 10 seconds, i see the screen, then it goes green, black, screen, 10 more seconds, green,black,screen...

I have tried as well with a minidisplay-hdmi cable I bought at an authorised apple reseller, but i get the same issue.

How did I try to solve it? I have both outputs connected, the hdmi goes to the yamaha (for audio only) and the minidisplay goes directly to the tv (for video only), then I dont get any flickering, however, after leaving the mini on for several hours (and watching a different input on the yamaha) if i try to go back to the mini there is no sound coming out, when I go to the system preferences->audio it says there are no audio devices.

Rebooting the mac at that point will bring the audio back, but what is the point of having a server you need to reboot once or twice a day?

I never had such issues with my old mini, I tried the programs recomended here, disabling 1.3a, doing the specific order of devices, PRAM restore, pram + shift, etc, and I am still having the same F***ing problem, so I replaced a 700e mac mini with a 1000e mac mini server and I cannot use it.

Apple please do something about it...

Thank you.
