Don't like Mission Control and miss Spaces!

I just upgraded to Lion, and am very disappointed with Mission Control. I am a spatially thinking person, and I loved the organization of my 6 Spaces, each with specifically assigned apps. I could write in one space, do spreadsheet work in another, have my mail in a third, iTunes in the fourth etc. And all along, I knew where each space was relative to any other. Additionally, combining Spaces with Expose, I could see all apps (and their windows) within each desktop space, open any app, or move it from one space to another.

In Mission Control, apps are assigned to different desktops without my control, and these desktops seem constantly reordered. Furthermore, when looking at Mission Control, it is impossible to see apps covered underneath other apps in all desktops besides the one currently in full view. Consequently, it is impossible to see all open apps and their windows at the same time, open them, or reorder them.

Mission Control has thus defeated the brilliant idea of Spaces, which created spatially ordered, potentially app-specific, desktops. From a neatly, spatially organized computer I now have an unordered and uncontrollable pile.

I see how Mission Control forces simple users to become more sophisticated. It is, however, at the cost of already more demainding users. I sincerely hope that Apple will make Spaces available again for people like me who rely on them for logical, spatial organization of their many computing tasks.

I never really used spaces, but I did use exposé extensively.

Is there a way to actually use Mission Control like Exposé? - Right now if I want to switch between different windows or applications they oftenly "bounce off" each other and I'm not able to get back to my desktop immediately.

I guess that's a bug... but who knows!

oh well... I wish I had bought my imac before Lion came out... 😟

I'm not sure what you're referring to. Do you mean that the desktops rearrange their order? If so, then you can disable that in System Preferences, Mission Control, Automatiically rearrange spaces based on most recent use.

Hm... I'm not completely sure if I'm able to explain what I mean...

Well, what I loved to do and am still used to is: I assigned Exposé to my left upper corner, so let's say I worked in photoshop but wanted to switch to the mail application window (which was open allready but behind the photoshop images): what I did was move the mouse to the upper left corner, all the windows would appear next to echt other and I could switch to mail - or also to another allready open photoshop image, etc...

Now when I try to do that I still see all the open windows on ONE desktop - sometimes they are not next to each other which is annoying, but that's not the real problem - I'm however not able to switch between those windows anymore. If for example I try to switch from photoshop to the mail window it will kind of bounce of the other windows but mission control won't go back to my desktop and show that window in front. It does work sometimes, does not other times and never works at a first try - I always get that bouncing windows and none of them will appear up front.

I guess that's not intended and a bug. the whole concept of mission controll would be quite stupid otherwise...

What I can do however is assign each open window or photo or whatever to another desktop - then I am able to bring each of them up individually... but honestly, that's not really helpfull. 🙂

Hmmm, sorry, I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're experiencing. (Limited processing power of the gray matter. 😝 ) Hopefully someone else can post a solution or workaround. Maybe you can post a Youtube video.

Me personally, I tend to not have too many apps open on each desktop. I've adjusted my workflow to have Safari and Mail in full screen, which gives each it's own "desktop", so no issues with what I think you're talking about when switching to a app, but the app's window is not in the foreground (a.k.a.: window does not have focus.) I also have certain specific apps assigned to specific desktops so on first launch, they'll go to their own desktop. (e.g.: Safari on 1, Chrome on 1, iTunes on 3, Mail on 4.) While Safari and Chrome are assigned to the same desktop, I usually have Safari in full screen so it gets it's own "desktop" and so Chrome is the only window open on Desktop 1.

I'm reviving an old post, but it took me a while to figure out how to show all windows in Mission Control.

1. Using gestures, move three fingers up (or 4, if assigned)

2. Hovering over the app you want, move two fingers up to view all windows.

3. From there, you can select the right window or move it to another desktop.

I hope this helps with some of the frustration with Mission Control!

Ben.
