Custom Quartz Filter In Preview Not Showing Up

In Snow Leopard, I could create a custom ColorSync profile to reduce PDF size (but not with quite as a dramatic drop in quality as the default PDF Reduce File Size) and it would show up in Preview as an option.

Now, in Lion, I still have the profiles, but they do not show up in Preview as a choice. I also cannot edit the default Reduce File Size profile in ColorSync as it is perma-locked.

The solution I realized involves the following:

  • Right click the PDF file you desire to work with and then select "Open with..."
  • Select the "Colorsync Utility" application
  • The Colorsync Utility will open up with your PDF file
  • At the bottom of Colorsync Utility status bar, you can select the quartz filter you wish to apply (including any custom ones you made)
  • Press "Apply"
  • Save the document

I hope this workaround can hold up for now. I do admit I miss the ability to see and use my quartz filters right out of preview.

Take care.

I have OS X version 10.11.3 and I was able to use the pdf quartz filters, but NOT from the original file. I first had to create a DUPLICATE from the Preview app and when I was prompted to save it, the pull down menus for the filter options were made available to me. I was able to reduce the size of a color scan (9.3MB) to a B&W file (1.8MB).

While this may be an old answer, it was new to me!

I hope this helps.

I also have 10.11.3 and here's what I did to make this work...

Step 1

go to HD/Applications/Utilities/ColorSync Utility

click the + at the bottom to create a new filter - named it 'Compress PDF'

left click on the circle down arrow on the right side of the window - Add Color Management Component > Convert to Profile

In the drop down select Generic RGB Profile > All Data > All Objects

left click on the circle down arrow on the right side of the window again - Add Image Effects Component > Image Compression

In the drop down select JPEG and move the slider to about 1/4 of the way from the min

Step 2

create a new folder named Filters and place in HD/Library

Step 3

go to HD/Users/Name/Library

if the Library is not visible then it has been hidden -

see http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/how-show-hidden-files-in-mac-os-x- finder-funter-3520878/

if visible, select the Compress PDF filter and move it HD/Library/Filters

The Compress PDF filter should now be visible at top of the options when saving a file in Preview

Now, can someone show me how to restore Compress PDF in the Print Dialog Box under the PDF options?
