Does MagicJack work with Lion? Should I wait to upgrade since I use MagicJack?

I am wanting to upgrade to Lion, but I can't get a clear answer from MagicJack.

Does anyone know if it works with Lion?

iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

As I do not use MagicJack at the moment, I can't tell you for sure, but it will probably work. It is an Intel application (it doesn't even work on the older PowerPC machines) and so it won't be affected by the lack of Rosetta in Lion. However, there may be other compatibility issues. If you have an external dirve or more than one Macintosh, you could install Lion on one of those and test it yourself.

Or perhaps someone else has already tested it?

I've got Magicjack working on 10.6.8 and a 2010 Mac Mini as a dedicated machine. Before I got that Mac Mini, I had it working on a 10.7 installed MacBook Pro 3,1. So yes it works with Lion, if you don't have any other USB devices attached. Magicjack does have some software you can install that might improve matters with Lion. So I would check that you got the latest software.

I'm sorry to report that my magicJack no longer works. It stays up for 20 minutes tops before I am unable to get a dial tone and have to restart the magicJack software. After working up through 3 levels of tech support and even allowing them to control my computer for a while, I was told that magicJack with Lion is still unstable and they could not offer any timeframe for a fix. It had been working for about a month. (All I had to do was keep the monitor unplugged from my Mac mini as that was preventing regular crashes of the magicJack software. Now I don't get crashes but I just lose the dial tone.) I do not recommend anyone buy a magicJack unless you are prepared for highly unreliable, albeit cheap, phone service. Maybe the new magicJack Plus, which doesn't require a computer, is better. I had bought 5 years of magicJack service but they're refusing to sell me a magicJack Plus and transfer the subscription to the new device. I'm probably just going to dump a landline and use only my cell phone. Also, Google Talk does a fine job of providing free long distance service.

Folks,

I hate to admit this but in order to get rid of Vonage, ATT, Verison and all the home phone companies, I went out and got a cheap, used HP Laptop. I can just hear your screams. But Magic Jack is running just fine. The $120.00 laptop and the $39.99 cost of the Magic Jack unit will have paid for themselves within five months. Of course this does not include the raise of my electrical bill (should be minimal). Problem solved.

Now if anyone thinks that this was a bad thing then I am truely sorry.

Thank you all for trying to help.

I have the Firewall set up to only allow this one item/program. I also don't have the Internet open, nor use it to for any other purpose. This laptop was cleaned and has none of my personal information, other than what was required to run Magic Jack. All updates will be rejected since none are required. It should be fine, besides the worst case would be a $120.00 laptop dies. Not too bad a trade off in my opinion.

Thanks

Now that the magicJack Plus has been released, and if it indeed works as advertised, it is no doubt superior to the magicJack since it can be used without ANY computer at all. I'm still skeptical about anything produced under the name "magicJack" after such bad experiences with the magicJack. And although on the surface their technical support is good, the people you can reach really can't help much. Because the device can very easily become non-functional when there are normal system upgrades, my guess is that the firmware/software is poorly constructed and kludgy.

I have Snow Leopard on my MacBook, MagicJack Plus works there no problem. I "tried" to install in on my iMac. It resulted in 10 hours of chat logs, 23 transfers to 21 different people. Typical level 1, 2, & 3 stuff. Asked multiple times if it was supported under Lion 10.7.2 & was told every time yes it was. All the folks were helpful, but no one could make it work. I was then transferred to a "Victor". Below is his chat.

Victor: Hi, I'm Victor , I'm a Senior Technical Representative here. I need to take control of your computer to be able to assist you with your problem.

Dewcati: Sure

Victor: Dewcati, may i know if you are using mac os lion right?

Dewcati: correct v10.7.2

Victor: Dewcati, for now we lion is not yet fully supported for magicjack

Dewcati: Victor, Thank you for telling me.

Victor: You are most welcome

Would have been nice to hear this at first. After about the 2nd/3rd hour, I turned it into a game, it was just a matter of seeing if they could fix it. At that point I didn't really care anymore. It works in Snow Leopard when needed and it's actually just plugged in as a standalone now anyway.

Glad to hear someone at Magicjack knows their status of "support". Well what works is Magicjack 2.0.607c on Mac OS X 10.7.(0) build 11A511. Not sure if it makes any difference, even if it isn't supported I had no trouble with it. Maybe different builds of Magicjack make a difference, and the fact it was on a MacBook Pro 3,1 in 32 bit mode with factory 2GB of RAM, from the 37th week of 2007, but there is what works.

Hi!

So I just set up my uncle's Mac Mini 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, OS X Lion 10.7.2 and the Magic Jack does not work at all.

Initially it was fine on 10.7.0 out of the box but after we ran the OS X Lion updates running 10.7.2 now and it just went wonky. We ran the MagicJack update as suggested and still no luck. Then connected it to a pc but no luck with that either when it used to be fine before. The MagicJack shows the same error on the pc as with the Mac. Very odd. Decided that our MJ unit might be busted. So to eliminate this possibility we tried out our spare MJ unit and it still won't work.

Basically what we are experiencing over here is that after we double click to start the magicJack, where the MJ icon appears it tells me to re-plug the magicJack. Then it opens to their website. Re-pluging and their pop-up to their website is of no help at all.

The magicJack is pluged directly to the MacMini and the only other things hooked up to the mini is the monitor, keyboard and mouse. Tried restarting and reinstalling the update. Still nada.

Help. We need the Magic Jack to work to keep in touch with my baby cousin's cardiologist etc. in NY as we live in the Philippines. So we're a bit desperate. I'm already contemplating on reformatting and reverting to Snow Leopard since I've read that its (fairly) compatible/stable (?).

I hope a working solution is offered soon or at least a notice from magicJack that 10.7.2 isn't supported. At the very least there be comfort in clarity than offering nothing at all.

After a long phone calls to magic jack and a lot of research, for now the only way to solve the problem is to change the old magic jack for the new magic jack plus, I did it and it works , you have two options you can plug it into the modem or inthe usb port, if you plug it in the modem no need to have the computer all the time on but you cant see the contact list.

OK, after over an hour online with their awful tech support last week, I finally found the solution posted on the net and have been able to get my MagicJack working with OS X Lion 10.7.2. Apparently, there is a problem with the permissions and there is an easy work around. However you have to have it installed on another computer first and then you drag some hidden files to the computer with Lion on it. Here are the instructions and they worked for me - INSTRUCTIONS TO GET MAGICJACK TO WORK WITH OS X LION 10.7 . However if you don't have another Mac lying around, you are still out of luck.

Dec 16, 2011 4:53 AM in response to pwfletcher

pwfletcher,

Those instructions are for Lion Server. That's a very different beast than what most of the people on this thread have. Lion Server has any system applications that don't even exist on Lion client, the operating system found on most Macs except those who pay for Lion Server, or those who pay for XServes, or Mac Mini Servers. While certainly a useful bit of info, you misnamed the link. Read the page again.
