Why is Lion so slow?

I installed Lion on a relatively new MacBook Pro (released early 2011) with an i7 dual-core processor. It is painfully slow, much slower than Snow Leopard was. Even things like surfing the internet (using Firefox) is very slow, and I see the little rainbow circular icon frequently.

Any ideas?

How long since you installed? sometimes spotlight will take a long time to index your drives and slow your computer down a LOT. Are you backing up with Time Machine? That can also slow down the computer until the backup i done.

Your read/write stalls makes me wonder about a failing hard drive. Hopefully, it was just a Parallels incompatibility.

I had a Seagate drive with known problems that eventually (prior to the warranty expiring, thankfully) started exhibiting stalled read/writes. Wiped and reinstalled, but got same stalls while restoring from backup. SMART status was Verified up until the drive stopped dead.

again I don't think parallels is the problem, it could be, but I don't think so, I was also having this problem when vmware was installed.

the latest flash for os 10.7 is actually a beta, there's no official release, but I discovered a massive barrage of kernel messages in my logs that I've traced back to flash 11 beta. after removing flash my mac is stupidly fast compared to what it was. only time will tell if it's fixed. for those who want to help me test this theory, just use the flash uninstaller located here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html

I'm not sure if it's going to be the problem or not, but it is triggering a stupid number of kernel messages so it's a good first test.

yes lanny, I do not wish to sound rude, but you've said this multiple times. the issue may not be related directly to flash but rather a combination of software interacting badly. we know you're not having issues. But I do appreciate knowing what issues you do have, helps me get a basis for comparison to see what's differant between the machines. what kinda mac are you using?

as for me, after uninstalling flash I have noticed an extreme speed increase, but I do not know if it will last. my mac usually runs fast and efficient [but not this fast] for a few hours after turning it on, it gradually looses speed while running.

it means no flash, correct. which since not a lot of the web is flash other than ads and a few games [discounting youtube and such] it shouldn't be a big loss, it can always be reinstalled after you check to see if it's the problem. so far my mac is still a lot snapier than before I removed it. I'm still not sure if flash will indeed be the problem but so far it's promising.

for those who want to try this for yourself, just use the uninstaller posted above to remove flash, if you still have problem please post it here and feel free to reinstall flash. if it fixes your problem please post that here too!

steps I took, ran uninstaller [had to quit safari] then rebooted once installer finished. now I'm just waiting to see result but since mac usually runs decently for first hour or two after turning it on, I'll just have to give it some time.
