How Do I Remove Items From Launchpad?

I installed the Badoo Desktop which appears in Launchpad only and I can't uninstall it anymore! Any ideas? Same with Growl: After the clicking the "x" on it's icon it disappears to pop up few seconds later. IMHO launchpad isn't a masterpiece at all and I don't understand why it should replace the Application folder.

Very simple and straightforward. It also has backup/restore functionality as well as the ability to rename or sort your Launchpad items. Great preference pane plugin. And it's FREE!

You can open launchpad, hold down the option key and the icons start to wiggle just like on the iphone. You click the "x" to remove the app. Hope this helps

I know 1.go to your finder 2.Go to applacations 3.look for the folder that has the name of the downloads 4.move the applacations you dont whant to the trash

I was having the same problem. All you have to do is type the name of the program and find it in "spotlight" then drag it from there to the trash and your done. Whew...🙂. I was getting worried.

Respectfully, some of you are missing the point of the original question. He wanted to know how to remove apps from Launchpad WITHOUT deleting the app itself.

Holding down the Option key while in Launchpad does not give an "X" on every app; in fact many will not show that X.

Dragging into the trash will in fact delete the app; not what is desired.

Launchpad-Control is no longer supported for Mountain Lion has been discontinued. However it is still available, and if you don't have Mountain Lion, I still recommend it as it is free with full features. It integrates right into the System Preference control panel and is very straight-forward.

If Launchpad Cleaner works well, then cool, check that out too.

Hopefully Apple makes this ability a built-in feature in an upcoming OS release, instead of us having to rely on a 3rd party app for what should be a basic function.

I know I'm bringing this thread back from the dead, but I just wanted to thank you for this simple workaround. I am a new OSX user and recently installed the Steam application for Mac. Specifically for Steam--if you install any game a Lanchpad icon is created by default. The problem is--even though you may uninstall/delete local content for the game from Steam, the Launchpad icon remains, leaving a "dead" Launchpad icon. Using Spotlight and removing the offending ghost app was the simplest way to remove the icon without having to reset the whole Launchpad, download another app or enter Terminal commands. Can you see it in spotlight. If you can drag it onto your desktop and then delete it. Empty your trash and when you click on it, it should come up with a question mark. Then click the cross button. Hope this helps! 😉

This post is a fix for removing Steam Games from the launchpad without using spotlight.

Finder>Go>Computer>Macintosh HD>Users>(*Your Username*)>Applications

Your steam apps should be there. When you drag the ones you don't want into the recycling bin, the Launchpad should automatically refresh.

I have been searching for something like this and just found it - if you deleted the item from the apps folder, but it didn't dissapear in launchpad, click on it in launchpad, and it has a question mark (watermarked over), then hold down option and the 'x' appears like app store apps.

Apparently you open Terminal and paste this sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps WHERE title='APP_NAME';" && killall Dock, replacing "APP_NAME" with the name of the application you want to delete. Worked for me!

Install free version of Launchpad program, http://launchpadcleaner.com, and run it, select items you want to remove form Launchpad and click remove selected icons.

P.S

Also this program will help if you have a problem when icons in Launchpad disappears, just run it, and click restore all items to default.

It's sad that this was posted in 2011 and Apple hasn't resolved this in 2014. I constantly get the issue where I delete the application from my Mac, however it refuses to delete the icons from Launchpad.
