Lion won't play .avi or .wmv correctly

i just bought macbook pro and it's already come up with QT 10. i try anything to make the video works with instal divx,perian,VLC,flip4mac and try to uninstall it too. But it's still didn't work. what should i do? i'm going crazy use mac..arrghhh... so difficult..

Read my post. It won't work with QT 10.

You must install QT 7.6.6 in the utilities Folder if it is not already there. Follow my instructions.

Do a GetInfo on any .avi file. Select Quick Time Player 7 for Open With. Check the box to Open All

Lion requires the Perian 1.2.3 plugin for QT 7.6.6 to work.

If you upgraded from 10.5.x, you might have QT 7.7 installed. Delete and empty trash. It does not work in SL or Lion.

Do not delete QT 10 from the Applications Folder. Do not move QT 7.6.6 from the Utilities Folder.

it's still didn't work. when i double click the file. it's says the file is not a movie file. what should i do?

In fact, not only the avi, wmv video files, but also lots of other video files, Lion can't support very well. As you know, mp4 or mov is friendly with Quicktime Player or VLC video player. I usually turn my .avi or .wmv video files to .mov on Lion OS X with a professional mac video converter software.

Generally, Quicktime can't play avi or wmv video files unless you install the related video codec. An easy solution is to convert avi to mov on Mac or convert wmv to mov on Mac.

QuickTime 10.1 now plays .avi files correctly. I noticed this a few days ago as I was going to load QT 7.6.6 on my wife's new iMac.

I have not discovered a .wmv that needs to be played on my system. If Windows users cannot figure out how to go cross platform, no longer my issue.

I expect that YouTube is going to be the great leveller here. Standards will emerge whether anyone wants them or not.

first try converting your .avi or .wmv files to Apple format. you can do this with iskysoft ultimate video converter(file>export) . then you can move all your files to itunes for new ipod or iphone. For iTunes or QT, you should select an iTunes-friendly output format, such as MOV, MP4 or M4V.

.avi files now play in QuickTime 10.1 or later without any plugin or conversion.

.wmv files still require QuickTime 7.6.6 with the Perian 1.2.3 plug in per my instructions above.

Once you have downloaded and installed Perian 1.2.3, you must do the following:

Do a GetInfo on any .wmv file.

Select Quick Time Player 7 for Open With.

It must say Quick Time Player 7. If not in the menu, select Other, navigate to your Utilities folder and then select Quick Time Player 7.

Check the box to Open All.

Perian 1.2.3 is no longer being updated but is still availaple from http://perian.en.softonic.com/mac

This still works in OS 10.8.1

I just upgraded to Lion recently and same problem with QT not working....this is the kind of nonsense you'd expect from Microsoft!! Appreciate all the various solutions & fixes by all the posters here, but Apple really needs to get it together and sort this out so it works out of the box (not everyone wants to spend days and days sorting out how to simply play a video!!!).. As already recommended by a couple posters here, get the VLC player from videolan.org, works with nearly every format....QT to the bin until Apple gets it fixed!!

Install quicktime 7 - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923

install Perian - http://perian.en.softonic.com/mac

There are ways to do this:

1. Delete the old Xvid codec or update the codec to the latest

2. Convert avi/wmv to a more Mac friendly file like avi to mov, m4v, mp4, etc.

3. Download flip4mac plugin, or Windows Media Player for Mac/VLC player

I haven't done this in a long while, so do some research. But i think one of these methods would works.
